1 JUNE, 2018 VOL. 151 NO. 6 A WORD FROM THE PASTOR, BRO. KEVIN DENTON In May we welcomed Jimmy and Vicki Bowles, and Amy Rupp into out fellowship through baptism. Baptisms are always a blessing from the Lord as a reminder of how He has changed our lives for all eternity and prepared us to live for Him today. We also grieved the passing of Joe Anne Zwakenberg with Garrit, Tray, April, their extended family, and friends. She has left an enduring mark on the heart of all who were blessed to know her. See you in heaven, dear sister in Christ. Graduate s Day Recognition is always an encouraging time. We celebrated with Isaiah Boles, Zackary Caudel, and Koie Meredith as they continue to learn, grow, and bless the world. We also hosted the Caverna High School Senior Lunch in the fellowship hall. Many of these young men and women have passed through our children and student ministries over the years. What a great opportunity to minister to them and their families one more time. Now it is June and you know what that means at HCBC, Vacation Bible School!!! We are in full gear preparing for this year s group of children and students as we invest in their lives, showing them Jesus through us. Jesus showed us how to think about children and how valuable they are to him and our Heavenly Father. God don t make junk! The Spirit stirs our heart to minister to these children as He takes the scriptures, bible based songs and crafts, meals and play time to stir these young souls to reach out to the Father who is reaching out to them. What an opportunity to effect eternity! Be sure to view page 2 of this newsletter for more details. It s not too late to get involved. is our largest outreach every year, but Sunday School is our largest ministry each week. and Sunday School require the most servants who personally touch the most people and have the most potential of changing the most hearts in our area than anything we do. Check out page 3 and see how many Gospel Conversations we recorded during May in Sunday School! In June we will also have members involved in Outreach and Missions. See page 4 to see opportunities you have to reach out locally, in KY, the U.S.A, and world. Don t miss the calendar on page 5 that gives you June at a glance. And don t forget our 150 th Anniversary and Homecoming in August. Page 6 is dedicated for the next months to give you the history of HCBC, researched and written by Ann Matera. We thank Ann for this important contribution to HCBC. Sam and Kathi, Debbie and I will be representing HCBC June at the Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting in Dallas, TX. It s been 30 years since I have attended the Annual Meeting, so I am looking forward to being involved in the largest gathering of Southern Baptists this year. I am also representing Liberty Association of Baptists on the KBC Mission Board that meets twice a year. Hearing all that SBC churches are doing in KY, the country, and around the world, I can report to you that our mission giving through the Cooperative Program is worth every penny. I walk away from these gatherings confident we have chosen as a church to cooperate in the largest, most efficient, most effective, most Kingdom driven mission movement the world has ever seen. No human attempt is going to be perfect so neither is the Cooperative Program. But if HCBC and other SBC churches ever decide to scrap the CP, we would have to develop something just like it if we take serious obeying the Great Commission. See page 5 for a brief description of how the Cooperative Program works. I can hardly wait to experience the joy our Lord is preparing for us this month! In His Love, Bro. Kevin

4 Serve Having your own ministry is a blessing. For the month of May, an average of 73 served weekly in our church. What a blessing! Continuation of Go Hart County Go When you reach out, you bless the one who reached out to you first. The Cooperative Program is the mission education, funding, and missionary sending agency of the Southern Baptist Convention. Every Baptist church is an independent church, meaning, they own their own building, call their own pastors, declare their own biblical beliefs, fund their own mission efforts, and bow to no outside influence. But over 45,000 Baptist Churches in the U.S. and Canada have voluntarily chosen to band together to obey the Great Commission, of which HCBC is one of these churches. Each SBC church decides how they fund the CP. HCBC has chosen to send 10% of all undesignated offerings through the CP. For 2017 that percentage equaled $30, The funds are sent monthly to the KBC office in Louisville which uses 50% of our contribution to fund missions in KY. KBC then sends the remaining 50% to the SBC Executive Committee located in Nashville which distributes our contributions to SBC agencies as directed by the churches at the Annual Meeting. This is an amazing, Christ honoring method which provides each cooperating Baptist Church the opportunity to accomplish much more together than they could ever do alone! Local Mission Partnership: Vacation Bible School: June :30 pm Pray for large numbers and both children and adults souls touched. See Terri Medcalfe to become a part of this outreach mission. 6 Horse Cave Baptist Church 301 East Main Street Horse Cave, KY Horse Cave Baptist Church History The Union Church The first building occupied by the United Baptist Church of Horse Cave was built jointly by the Methodists, Presbyterians, Campbellites and Baptist during the early part of It was located on the north side of Church Street at the end of what is now Wright Street. Following Cyrus Edwards account of the layout of the main street through and out of town in 1853, it appears that this location would put the church on a prominent curve of the principal street from the railroad to the L&N turnpike (now Highway 335-Old Dixie) at the top of the hill. The second story of the building was occupied by a lodge of Free Masons. Sunday School was conducted by all denominations as a Union Sabbath School. The Baptists conducted their business meetings after a sermon on the Saturday before the fourth Sunday and services on the fourth Sunday. All churches supported the upkeep of the church. Early minutes recount the naming of a committee to employ and oversee a sexton for the building and the problems the church had raising enough money for both the pastor s salary and the church s share of the sexton s salary. There would be few other expenses since these were the days before electricity and running water. The January 1887 minutes record the sale of the church s share of the union church. The year before (1886) Dr. M. V. Edwards donated the present site of Edwards Avenue and Bear Wallow Road (Now Main Street) to the church for the purpose of erecting a house of worship. On June 12, 1886, a resolution to build a church was passed. The Frame Church The year was Grover Cleveland was in the White House and had just married Frances Folsom, the 21-year old daughter of a former law partner. It remains the only marriage of a sitting President to take place in the White House. J. Proctor Knott presided in Frankfort as governor of a Kentucky torn by the height of the Hatfield-McCoy feud in Appalachia. The Baptists in Horse Cave had accepted Dr. M. V. Edwards offer of a lot at the corner of Edwards Avenue and the Bear Wallow Road for the purpose of having a house of worship erected thereon for the use of this Church. H. S. Shoudy proposed to build the church as long as the congregation agreed to prepare the foundation, paint the church when it was completed, furnish it (complete with a bell), landscape the finished lot, and provide sidewalks. By resolution, the church accepted all of the conditions and appointed J. E. Abbott, D. E. Hatcher, Geo. W. Knizely and Dr. M. V. Edwards as the building committee to do the church s share of the work and find the money to pay for it. R. J. Sublett, F. T. Thompson and John W. Mustain were appointed the first Trustees of the church to receive the title of the land and building. The church was moving, not only to the first building which would belong to only their congregation, but also to an upwardly mobile section of town with room for expansion. Horse Cave had begun as a village largely west of the railroad between the L&N and the L&N turnpike (now Hwy. 335) at the top of the hill. The part, given by Major Albert Anderson to the railroad to be used by the town, gradually became the center of commerce. By 1886, newer homes were built on Bear Wallow Road (Main Street) and auxiliary streets, such as Edwards Ave. In 1880, the Methodists had moved to a one-room building on their present lot. Apparently building proceeded apace. In October Shoudy was to see to the dedication of the new building, In November, the minutes say for the first time that the church met at their house of worship, language not used prior to this time. There is no record of formal dedication of the frame building.
