1 Join Us! Celebration Sunday August 12, :30 AM HCBC Newsletter Vol. 151 No. 8 A WORD FROM THE PASTOR, BRO. KEVIN DENTON We are in high gear celebrating the 150 th Anniversary of Horse Cave Baptist Church! Ann Matera and Marcia Witherspoon have spent hours telling our story through written history, pictures, displaying artifacts, documenting mission efforts, and remembering those who have made this church what it is today. Christy Schroeder has spent hours scanning and showing our history through pictures and documents on our screen each Sunday. Ann has spent most of her life in this church as many of you have. Frances Houk has been a member longer than anyone else. Marcia s great grandparents were some of the founding members. What a history! What a legacy! What a responsibility we have to move forward! We experienced the Lord s Supper in July with all three communion sets on the table the church has used since We have heard the bell ring the church has used since We have seen the first church bible from We have studied the four structures the church has used for worship over 150 years. We have highlighted Pastors, Deacons, Treasurers, Building Committees, as well as children. The hundreds, yes even thousands of people who have passed through those doors, sat in those pews, and have gone out into the world following the lead of their Lord. This is our Place. But it is HIStory. Horse Cave Baptist Church is about the structures where we have worshipped and studied, the Pastors and church leaders we have learned from, and the members who though passed still teach us by how they lived. But Horse Cave Baptist Church is first and for most about The Lord Jesus Christ. It s not our church, it s His. It s not our story, it s HIS. It s not our power; it s HIS Spirit at work in HIS people. It s not our purpose, it s HIS. It s not our message, it s HIS. It s not our blood, it s HIS. It is Our Place in HIStory. The church, the bible, the world, the universe, all of history, your history, is all about HIM. Now that is something to celebrate! Do all you can to attend Celebration Sunday, August 12, Worship begins at 10:30 am. There will be no Sunday School on that day. Bro. Gerald Murphy will lead worship music, Bro. Harold Barns will bring us a greeting, and Bro. Tommy Tucker will bring the message. Then plan on staying for the meal at 12:30 pm. We will have a tent set up on the main parking lot so we can all gather together in one place for Dinner on the Grounds. The meal will be catered so you do not need to bring anything, except bring someone with you. We hope for 250 that day, but only if you invite. If you are able to walk, please park on Edwards Avenue, or on the street so our senior adults and guests can use our main parking lot. Sunday August 19 we are encouraging everyone to be in Sunday School that day as we get back to the business of reaching people, teaching people, and ministering to people. Philippians 1:6 has been our theme verse, Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Jesus is saying to us, come on we have work to do. Let s follow HIM! I can hardly wait for August 12. How about you? In His Love, Bro. Kevin
2 The Present Building Immediately the church was again considering a building program, the largest of its 86 year history. The Deacons and the Brotherhood recommended that the present building be torn down and that a new building be erected. Type and size to be determined by the Church. J.W. Murray, Clyde Lisenby, Dr. J.T. Payton, Lyndon Bale and H.H. Hansbrough were named to the finance committee. James I Winn, Jr., Rex Bailey, David McLellan, Sr., Levy Broady and C.E. Dowell were named to the building committee. Sunday School Supt. R.E. Nelson was added in February To understand what a leap of faith this was, at the regular business meeting earlier that month, treasurer Amos Houk had reported $1531 in the building fund with another $450 designated to repair the carpet and baptistery in the old church. With $2000 the Horse Cave Baptist Church went forward to double the size of its facility. The deacons recommended that the old building be torn down at once and the new building started as soon as the lot was cleared. The church rented the garage building belonging to Charlie Branstetter at the southwest corner of Main and Edwards as the church auditorium during construction. In August 1957, the building fund stood at $23,294 with hole in the ground from the old building. The finance committee was to borrow $50,000 to put the building under roof. Amos Houk was Trustee for the mortgage; 543 bonds were sold. The corner stone was laid October 21, There is a cooper tube inside with a church history, a report from the finance committee, a bulletin and other information. On October 5, 1958 the Church moved into the present building. The sanctuary seated 586 people. 26 Sunday School rooms were included, along with a fellowship hall, library, pastor s study and office. In the dedication service at a later date, Bro. J.W. Vetter, Pastor, quoted John Ruskin: Only once in a lifetime comes the privilege of helping build a church that will stand for generations in a community for which it was built. When we build, let us think we build forever, let it not be the present alone. Let it be such work that a time is to come when these stones will be held sacred; and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, See! This our fathers did for us! The dedication was held June , with Dr. Eugene Hill, former pastor, then with the Foreign Mission Board in Richmond, presenting the dedicatory sermon. The estimated value of the new building $307,000; number of members $25,000 in additional funds were borrowed to finish the facility. In November of 1964, a committee (John Branstetter, Rex Bailey and James I. Winn) reported that a steeple could be erected on the church for $3500. The contract was signed. Mrs. Gheens of Louisville advised that she would like to get the steeple in memory of her grand parents. In 1966 the lighting of the steeple was installed by Walter Preston and Felix Murray in honor of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Murray. That same year the sanctuary was air-conditioned. 301 E.
