2 Since the last meeting of the General Conference of the United Methodist Church (2016), many of us have wondered about the fate of our denomination. We have wondered if any part of our church would or could remain untouched by the growing tension surrounding how we include homosexual people in our church. A special General Conference has now been called to deal with issues of human sexuality. This debate has occurred every 4 years since 1972, when sentences regarding homosexuality were added to the Social Principles of the United Methodist Book of Discipline (our church law and statement of beliefs). Finally, debates and protests came to a head. A commission was formed by our bishops to study how our denomination could go forward and preserve as much unity as possible. They finished their work in May 2018 and presented three potential plans for going forward to the Council of Bishops and they have been presented to the 864 voting delegates and their alternates. The delegates will be voting on the Traditional Plan, the One Church Plan, and the Connectional Conference Plan. Each of these plans have their pros and cons. Each plan also tries to preserve either unity or church law. The possibility exists that none of these plans may pass. Regardless, we will know by the end of this month what the future of our denomination may look like. As we face this General Conference this month, I want to leave you with these thoughts about what you can do. First of all, please pray. Pray for the eight voting delegates from our conference and for all the delegates all over the world. Pray for the bishops as they preside over the conference proceedings. You can pray from 2:23-2:26 daily (to match the dates of the conference) or any time you like. But above all else, pray. Secondly, stay informed. There will be lots of opinionated and biased news reporting from all of the different caucus groups within the United Methodist Church. The official news outlet of the UMC is umnews.org. This will be the site that will give you the facts of what happens. The conference should also be live-streamed online if you should want to watch it for yourself (I always like to hear it straight from the source.). Check your sources and stay informed. We are here to talk you through this potentially difficult time. We want to help you understand (and for you to help us understand) what is going on in the larger denomination. As for Couts, our mission is going to remain the same no matter what is decided for our denomination this month. We are still going to be making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We are still going to be involved in mission all over the world. We are still going to pray. We are still going to worship. We are still going to study God s Word. Our mission stays the same. So, my brothers and sisters, stay alert by hanging in there and praying for all believers (Eph. 6:18b). May God richly bless you this month in all that you do! 4 Souper Bowl Sunday February 3, children will have soup pots at the doors of the sanctuary collecting spare change to contribute to the Snack drive. The amount contributed will be added to the national total of food donated Souper Bowl Sunday. Sunday Jan 20, we welcomed Kristen from our Pray and Play program to Couts Sunday School and Worship. TWEENS: If you know of a fifth grade boy or girl interested in Tweens please contact Miss Sarah or let one of the tweens know. Tweens Outreach: Thank you for your support during the Christmas Pie Sale. If you have not picked up a pie your ordered, they are in the freezer in the kitchen off the gym. The tweens raised which they decided to divide as follows: to our Cuban Sister Church for the Fox Hollow snack drive to be used in some way for children in Cook s Children s Hospital. The remaining are set aside to fund future fellowship. Fox Hollow snack and Gift Card Drive. Tweens and Children s Ministry s February 0utreach is an extension of our mission with Fox Hollow.The shopping cart will be in the in the Welcome Center. Please help us by bringing in individually wrapped snacks and Walmart Gift Cards to support Freida January s work at Fox Hollow. Every Thursday after school Freida provides snacks and activities for up to 40 Children. She is able to get some food from Center of Hope, but with the change of their policy it is not enough. She has asked for individually wrapped snacks such as cheese and crackers, Nutella and crackers, Gold fish, Chips, individual juice boxes, and large boxes of lemonade powder. Our very own Santa came to Fox Hollow When Couts held the First Annual Christmas Party) KidZone Our Kidzone Wed. PMs flourishes! We now have forty children registered with the average attendance of 25. We need to add two drivers/riders to our pick up crew. Our one room Sunday School continues with their study: The Heart Of God, from Group Publishing. We entered the New Testament with the Story of Zacheus and how God hears our prayers. 6 Book Arrived in Tanzania Thank you to Couts, CCA, Children s Ministries, and Nengai Benton for making this book drive possible. The books arrived in good shape at The Maasae Girls Lutheran Secondary School. As you can see from the pictures they are well appreciated! Jr. League Basketball This year, Couts began it s 45th year of being involved with Jr. League Basketball and the 41st year of it being held in our gym. We host around 90 1st and 2nd grade boys and their families each Saturday. We have the privilege of teaching them some skills about the game of basketball and most importantly, teaching them about the love of Jesus Christ. We ve gotten an awesome start and will be at the halfway point of the season this Saturday. A special thanks to our youth for providing encouraging scripture and gifts each week. Please continue to pray for this awesome ministry. You are invited to join us at the parsonage (1101 North Elm Street) for a party to celebrate Judah Raquel Jones Saturday, February 2nd, :00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Come and go as you please, cake at 2:30 p.m.) In lieu of gifts, please make donations to our sister church in Havanah, Cuba. Emmaus Community Gathering Friday, February 8th 6:00 p.m. Calvary United Methodist Church Everyone is invited to come to the Emmaus Community Gathering on Friday, Feb. 8th at 6:00 p.m. at Calvary UMC. Please bring a covered dish to Page 6 share with the group. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a time of Worship and a 4th Day Talk. You do not have to have been on an Emmaus Walk to attend. If you would like to come for the fellowship or to find out more about going on a walk, we would love for you to attend.

Called General Conference Meeting February 23rd - 26th The Council of Bishops has called a Special Session of the General Conference of The United Methodist Church to be held February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri.
