1 Point of Grace Press Januar y, 2016 Reaching the Community, Teaching the Word of God, and Proclaiming the Good News of Jesus! Point of Grace is a Christian congregation within the Southeastern District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. ( Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. From the Pastor Greetings for the New Year in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I pray all is well with you as 2016 shines brightly ahead of us. There are several key events in the life of PoG that you should know about. First of all, we will be offering our community a pancake supper on Shrove Tuesday, February 9th that will involve many PoG hands. This is an outreach event intended to bless and reach out to our community. Next, Pastor Ron Wiese will lead us through a stewardship awareness class for four weeks beginning February 14th. You will see more information about this in the weeks ahead. Also, Matt Holmquist and I will be offering an Alpha class beginning Monday, February 22nd. We intend to reach out to Davidson students, BUT any/everyone is invited to attend. You will see more information soon. Five circuit pastors have come together to offer a Lent program titled, "Place of the Passion." During Lent, we will have guest preachers on Wednesday nights, and I will be speaking at four other churches. A schedule will be posted for you to peruse. You will learn more about the Upper Room, the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus' betrayal, the Courtyard, and the place of Jesus' trial. Should be very interesting! Finally, our website is in the process of getting some welcome updates. This will be especially helpful for me as it will be easier for me to make changes; I know just enough about technology to be dangerous! Well, as you can read, PoG is going to get very busy for this winter term. I truly hope you will take advantage of all we are offering and discussing; it is done for you. And, feel free to invite someone to attend these classes/ events! Fred The Point of Grace Ark Float with worship team participated in the N. Mecklenburg Parade on December 5th. Stay tuned on how we will use the float for outreach! January 10 January 12 February 9 Dates to Note Confirmation of Emma and Adam Ponivas Board of Trustees Meeting Board of Trustees Special Meeting Pancake Supper February 10 Lenten Services begin February 22 Alpha Class begins From the President Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it! As I write this article, we have just entered into the season of Epiphany, (January 6, twelve days after Christmas), which celebrates the visit of the Magi (or wise men) to the baby Jesus. On Sunday, January 10, we will celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord, as recorded in Luke 3:21-22: When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Also on January 10, we will celebrate with the Ponivas family, as Emma and Adam are confirmed into the Christian faith, recognizing and confirming the oaths taken in their stead by their parents and sponsors (God parents) when Emma and Adam were baptized. On this occasion, Emma and Adam will have the opportunity to confess for themselves, their belief in Jesus Please turn to Page 2. The lighted float parked in front of the Church.
2 Page 2 Point of Grace Press January, 2016 Letter from the President, continued Christ as their Lord and Savior, and the only way to salvation and eternal life with God. In this (New Year s) season, it is also an opportunity for us to enter into a new beginning. We may have experienced setbacks and failures throughout our lives. Sometimes, we allow these mistakes, sins, setbacks or failures to enslave us to the point that we may never enjoy the full Christian life that God has given us to enjoy. We may have done something or said something to a friend or relative, and then have been ostracized from them for years. This may be the time to reach out to that person(s). Christ is recorded in John 10:10b, saying: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full, and again in 2 Cor. 5:17, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! The good news is that God s intent is to show that he wants to do something new in your life; to give you a fresh start; a new beginning. Please be open to His offer and promise to start that new life in Christ. Don t hold onto the past. God has spoken in Isaiah 43:18: Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. The Board of Trustees will meet on Sunday, January 10, following the 11:00 am worship service, to have its new beginning, with a newly constituted board. We welcome Gwen Faggart into our midst as the corporate (and recording) Secretary, and extend to her, the right hand of Christian fellowship as another servant for Christ. If there is anything you would like the board to consider, please mention it to one of the members (listed in your bulletin). Two days later, on Tuesday, January 12, the Board of Trustees will meet once again, this time at 7:00 pm, with only one topic on the agenda; that topic is the Consecrated Stewards program. At this meeting, we will be led by the Reverend Dr. Ron Wiese, who will explain to us, the important points of the program, and pray with us for the blessing of it by God and for its joyful reception by the Point of Grace parishioners. On February 14, the Board of Trustees will have another meeting, following the 11:00 am worship service. The Voters Assembly will meet on Sunday, March 13, at 9:30 am. If you are a Communicant Member of Point of Grace, at least eighteen years of age, and are interested in becoming a member of the Voters Assembly, I urge you to consider attending the March 13, meeting. In Christ s service, Bill Boyd The Hoffmans hosted fellowship and a cookie exchange on December 19th. Wednesday Eve Lenten Services During Lent we will have guest preachers on Wednesday nights at 7 pm and Pastor Hoffman will be speaking at four other churches. The dates and topics are: February 17 February 24 March 2 March 9 March 16 The Upper Room: A place of Service Gethsemane: A Place of Strength The Betrayal: A place of Eternal Love The Courtyard: A place of Renewal The Trial: A place of God's Will Prayer Reminder Please pray for your church! Those in need of prayer are listed on the bulletin insert each Sunday. Also, you could use your picture directory each week and pray for our members. Pray for protection, and health, and blessing for your fellow Point of Grace members. Altar Guild Each Sunday the altar is prepared with the Bread and Wine for our 11 am Worship Service. If you are interested in helping with this part of our worship, please see Dotsi or her at dotsimh@carolina.rr.com. No experience necessary! She will show you how it is done. Thank you to Rick Stapula for his many hours constructing and painting the float for the parade.
4 January, 2016 Point of Grace Press Page 4 Consecrated Stewards coming in February Consecrated Stewards is a grace-based, biblical stewardship program designed to energize members in their on-going giving. It is a fourweek program designed by stewardship leaders of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod that has been used in hundreds of Missouri Synod churches around the nation with amazing results. It uses Sunday morning Bible studies and worship services to inspire and equip congregational members to be better managers of the gifts God has given them. Thousands of fellow Lutheran Christians have enjoyed and benefited from this Gospel-focused process. Point of Grace members will have the opportunity beginning February 14 to become participants of this process in "Growing Christian Stewards." Watch for further details. Several Point of Grace members enjoyed fellowship and traded homebaked cookies on December 19 at Hoffmans. Above Right: Rick, Bill, and Archie. At Left: Sue and Linda. Below: Ron, Dave, and Gene. Below Right: Nancy and Paula. Take-away points to think about from Pastor Hoffman s sermon January 3rd: (Read 1 Kings 3:4-15 to see the context.) Every time we step in church: a. We are in a sense letting go of self. v.9 Give your servant * When and why do we focus on self and lock God out of our lives? b. Letting God lead us giving up our control. v.6 you have shown... * When and why do we take control back? c. Admitting that God is bigger than we are source of all. v.13 I give you what you have not asked * When and why do we make ourselves bigger than God? d. Acknowledge our responsibility to God s people. V. 11 and have not asked for yourself *What opportunities does God give us that we miss? e. We worship God. V.15 offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings *Worship is worship of God Pancake Supper We will be holding an outreach Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 9th from 5:00 6:30 pm. See the flyer on page 7 for more details. Mark your calendar! A team of Point of Grace members volunteered at the Charlotte Samaritan s Purse processing center on December 3rd. We packed the shoeboxes into age-appropriate cartons for boys and girls. Thanks to all who donated a gift shoebox!
