2 Parish Leaders Workshop April 23-24, 2010 Faith Formation in the Future: Discerning a Path for the Journey Keynoter: Sharon Ely Pearson 2 Keynote: Faith Formation 2020: Exploring the Future of Christian Formation in our Congregations What will Christian Formation look like in ten years? Many essential factors will determine a vibrant Christian formation program in the future. Discover some of the research conducted by an ecumenical think tank, as we explore the four scenarios that could impact our formation programs. From the totally apathetic to organized religion to those who are fully engaged in living out their baptismal promises, our churches will need to be ready for whatever new paradigm exists in the future in order to survive. Using The Charter for Lifelong Christian Formation passed at the 2009 General Convention, we will apply these scenarios to determine how our churches can be places where we empower all to live a Christian life of meaning and purpose. Workshop: One Size Does Not Fit All: How To Choose a Curriculum for Children & Youth Using the lens of your church s mission statement as well as your programmatic framework, we will explore the various types of curricula: lectionary-based, scope & sequence, Montessori-type, Rotation Model, and thematic. We will learn an approach for evaluating and assessing materials that will benefit your church community in choosing the right programs for your children and youth. Workshop: Faith Is a Verb: Attending to the Needs of Adult Formation Adults want their church to offer Bible Study, and when offered, only a few people show up. Discover ways to design appropriate adult formation offerings that fit the needs of seekers, scholars, and everyone in between. By understanding adult stages of faith development and exploring the variety of programs, resources, and curricula, you will be able to design your own menu of opportunities to engage adults in living out their Christian faith. Bio: Sharon Ely Pearson joined Church Publishing, Inc. in 2007 as their first Christian Formation Specialist after ten years as Children s Ministries and Christian Education Coordinator for the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. With a B.S. in Special Education, she has a certificate in Christian Education from Hartford Seminary and a Master s degree in Christian Education from Virginia Seminary. Her thesis, A Theology of Confirmation for the 21 st Century, was the spark for new diocesan guidelines implemented in 2005 in Connecticut and modeled by many others since then. She is the author of The Prayer Book Guide to Christian Education, 3 rd edition, published by Morehouse Publishing in 2009.
