6 Extra Moments, Extra Ideas for Unit 1 Give a copy of this page to each teacher or helper. Use the activities for early arrivers, during transition times, or whenever there is extra time. Unit 1 Bible Memory Activities Print copies of the Bible Memory Poster from the Resources CD printable files and display them where you and others can refer to the Bible Memory often. Allow children to color in the letters and decorate their posters with stickers. Using the printable file from the Resources CD, teach motions that will help children learn the unit 1 Bible Memory. And be sure to use the motions as children sing the Bible Memory song, Our Lord Is Great, from the CD. Be sure to send home the Family Letter found on the Resources CD. Ask parents to reinforce the Bible Memory words each day throughout the week. The parents could say the verse with the child before a snack or meal, as they play, during a bath, right before bed, or while riding in the car. Remember that the songs on the Resources CD are reproducible. You or a member of your congregation could make copies of the songs on the CD and send a CD home with each child. Such CDs are great tools for helping parents to be able to sing the songs with their children all week long. Unit 1 Learning Center Several lessons in this unit involve some of Jesus great miracles of healing. Children love to play doctor. Set up this center with baby dolls, doll blankets, washcloths, gauze, and items from toy doctor s kits. Chat with interested children: What s wrong with the baby? Is he sick? Did this baby hurt her arm? As children treat their patients, tell them that Jesus liked to help people feel better too. Seasonal Bulletin Board Cover a bulletin board with sheets of newspaper. Place the Scamper quarterly poster (Resources sheet 8) in the center of the board. Show children how to make construction-paper flowers. Fasten the flowers around the poster on the bulletin board. Scamper s message, Jesus is good news! can remind children that Jesus is the best news they will ever read about. Allergy Notice Print out and fill out the Allergy Notice from the Resources CD (Teacher Helps folder) for each snack that is served. Post it visibly for parents to take note. And always check your own children s information. Also mark name tags so volunteers can easily identify dietary needs. Teaching Tip The Resources CD printable files include both the International Children s Bible and the King James Version for the Bible Memory Posters, Bible Memory Motions, and Family Letters. Song lyrics are also provided on the Resources CD. Be sure to print and display those in your Sing and Pray area. Read The Great Physician in the lesson 1 folder on the Resources CD for tips about considering the needs of chronically ill children during this unit. Something More! 7 Jesus Heals an Official s Son Scripture: John 4:46-53 Bible Memory: Psalm 147:5 Our Lord is great and very powerful. (ICB) Great is our Lord, and of great power. (KJV) Focus: Jesus does great things. Lesson 1 Heart to Heart Teacher Devotion No matter how old we are, we must be amazed at the great things Jesus did while walking on earth. He healed people who had been sick all their lives. He mended broken relationships. He set free those who had been captive in their minds and their bodies. Jesus continues to do awesome work in the lives of people today. This unit s lessons will show us that our most natural response to Jesus work is praise. Bible Background for the Teacher While the Galileans were glad to welcome Jesus, they were probably more interested in His miracles than in His teachings about salvation. The official who asked Jesus for a miracle was probably in service to Herod, tetrarch of Galilee. At the time of Jesus ministry, a day began at sunrise, roughly 6:00 a.m. Noon was the sixth hour. Scripture says the boy in today s story was healed at the seventh hour, or about 1:00 p.m. Lesson 1 at a Glance 1 GETTING STARTED Use one or more of these learning centers to help children explore caring for people who are sick. 8 Getting Started (10 15 minutes) 1 Use one or more of these learning centers to help children explore caring for people who are sick. Focus Jesus does great things. Welcome Use a Scamper puppet to greet the children. Place a name tag on each child, gather necessary information from the adult bringing the child; then guide the child to a learning center. Provide a container in which children can place their offering money. Save all visuals for reuse throughout the quarter. Quick Step Get-Well Cards SAY: The Bible tells us that Jesus does great things. Today s Bible story is about a time when Jesus showed His care for a person who was sick. Let s make get-well cards and talk about ways we care for people who are sick. Show a completed card. Assist as needed in cutting out and folding the cards. Have children finish coloring the picture and add stickers. ASK: What do people need when they are sick? How can you care for someone who is sick? Who will you give your card to? Doctor s Visit SAY: Jesus does great things. One great thing Jesus does is care for sick people. Let s look at caring for people who are sick. We will pretend we are going to the doctor s office. Divide the children into groups of three and assign parts: child, doctor, and parent or caregiver. Have them pretend to visit the doctor because the child is sick. They can wait in the waiting room, talk to the doctor, take temperatures, look in ears and mouths, and make diagnoses. (Note: If you have a smaller class, Scamper and you can be the patient and caregiver.) ASK: Who takes care of you when you are sick? What do you like about your doctor? What makes you feel better when you are sick? Being Sick SAY: Today s Bible story is about Jesus. Jesus does great things. He can heal people when they are sick. Have you ever been sick? Let s look at caring for people who are sick. We will look at these picture cards for ideas. Discuss one set of cards (1a 1c). Then place the cards out of order and have the children put the cards in the correct sequence. Do the same with the second set of cards (1d 1f). Ask the children questions to help them think about what it is like to care for someone who is sick. ASK: Who on our cards is sick? Who is helping each sick person? How is the sick person being cared for? Especially for 2s! Consider using only the before-and-after pictures to narrow down choices for this activity. Make-n-Share and stickers for lesson 1, blunt-tip scissors, crayons (or washable markers) Teaching Tip Ask your church office to provide a list of people who are sick. toy doctor s kits, gauze, wrap, adhesive bandages, stethoscopes (with adult supervision) (optional: Scamper puppet) Read The Great Physician in the Resources CD Unit 1 Special Needs Help file for tips about considering the needs of chronically ill children during this unit. Resources sheet 1 Being Sick picture cards 1a 1f Cleanup Go to an area that needs cleaning and ring a bell. Children can run to that area and clean it. Repeat in other areas until the room is clean. 24 Jesus Heals an Official s Son, Lesson 1

A man who lived miles and miles away came to Jesus. Show sad side of 1h. This man was an important helper for the king. His son was very sick. The man wanted Jesus to heal his son. Please, please heal my son, the man said. He is very sick and may die. Move 1g and 1h as though talking to each other. Jesus told the man, Your son will live. Go to him. This made the man happy. Turn 1h around to show the man smiling. The man believed Jesus and started going home. Remove Jesus 1g. As the man traveled home, some of his workers came to him. Show workers 1i. They had good news. Your son is well, they said. The workers told the man at what time his son got better. It was the exact time as when the man was talking to Jesus! The man and his workers hurried home. The man and everyone who lived in his house believed in Jesus. Jesus does great things. Resources sheet 2 Bible story cards 1g 1i Bible Review Use the Bible story cards to review the Bible story. Scamper ran through the trees until he stopped on a branch right above the children. Scamper suddenly stops running. The children were very excited. They were hugging and giving high fives to one of the boys. Scamper listened to what the children were saying. The boy was telling about how he had been sick all week. Scamper sadly shakes head. He couldn t come outside and play. He couldn t play with his friends. He just didn t feel well at all. So the boy s mother took him to a doctor, who gave him some medicine. Saying Good-bye As the children wait for their parents, encourage them to play Say and Toss as they say the Bible Memory (see first hour). Be sure children have projects made in class and this week s Heart Tugs. Encourage parents to do A Prayer in Motion activity with their children. Note: A Family Together Time page is available online for families to download. See Cleanup Sing Cleanup Song found on the Resources CD Teacher Helps printable files. Encourage children to sing along as they pick up toys and help to put away supplies. 30 Jesus Heals an Official s Son, Lesson 1, Extra Hour

15 Just for You Get Prepared to Teach Most of us have owners manuals for our gadgets. We seldom read these, because we assume that we can figure things out on our own. But when it comes to the short and precious time we have to teach children about God and His Word, we need to know the fundamentals that will take our teaching from humdrum to high-energy! PREPARE... Yourself Read and study the lesson text from God s Word. Pray and ask God for wisdom as you teach children about Him. Pray that the kids in your class will come to know God and the abundant life He gives. The lesson Familiarize yourself with the different aspects of the lesson. If your curriculum offers activity options, choose which options will work best for the kids in your class. Know the Bible story well enough so that you re not tied to the teacher s guide while telling it. The materials During the week, collect materials and prepare them for the activities you ve chosen. Being prepared is one of the best ways to prevent kids attention from wandering! The environment Take time to eliminate clutter and rearrange furniture. Make your room a place that is inviting and interesting for kids. To arrive early It s important to remember that no matter what your class s official start time is, class begins when the first child enters the room. Talking with children as they arrive is a great way to nurture relationships! We have very little time to impact the children we teach. Being prepared gives us a relaxed attitude that reflects God s love and care as we share the good news! For more inspiration and training, you ll want to get a copy of Teacher Training Smart Pages. Available from your Christian retailer or at SundaySchool.com
