15 Bible Story: The Three Wise Men Today s story happened after Jesus was born, probably when he was just about two years old. About this time, some very smart men known as wise men started to look for Jesus. Listen to the story to hear how they learned about Jesus, his birth, and what they did for Jesus! The wise men lived far away. One of the things they liked to do was study the stars in the sky. One night, they saw something very, very special in the sky. They pointed to the sky. They were so excited! They saw a very special star, and they knew it meant that a new baby king was to be born. They knew that this baby king was God. The wise men decided to go to him and worship him. They said, Let s follow that star and find the new baby king! They packed their things, and each wise man took a very expensive gift for the baby king. They took spices and expensive gold. When the wise men were ready for their very long trip, off they went. Finally they came to Jerusalem, where King Herod lived. The wise men asked the king, Where is the baby king who was born? We saw his star, and we ve followed it here. King Herod was angry when he heard that a new baby king had been born. King Herod thought that when the baby grew up, the baby would want to be king and would take his job. He didn t like that thought at all! So King Herod asked the chief priests and teachers if they knew where the baby king was to be born. The chief priests and teachers said, In Bethlehem. Well, King Herod called the wise men to him and said, When you find the baby king, come back and tell me so I can go worship him, too. The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem. The star popped over the house where Mary, Joseph, and Jesus lived. When they saw Jesus, the wise men bowed down and worshipped him. They gave him the present they brought. When it was time for the wise men to go home, God warned them in a dream not to go back to King Herod. So the wise men went home a different way. They brought some very special gifts for baby Jesus. Two of the wise men brought very wonderful-smelling gifts. The other wise man brought sparkling gold for Jesus. The wise men worshiped Jesus. Ask: What are some ways we can worship Jesus? (By singing to Jesus; by bowing down to Jesus; by saying good things about Jesus). God sees our actions and knows how we feel. God is pleased when we choose to worship him. Supply each child a Fish die-cut and each table with several stamp pads. Encourage the class to use their thumbs or fingers to make the scales of the fish by pressing their fingers onto the ink pad and transferring their fingerprint onto the fish. Remember have the children attach today s Bible verse tag to the craft. Build a Fish from Blocks Encourage the children to use the blocks to make a large, flat fish on the floor. Challenge them to gather up the blocks and make a different fish. Mention that the fish the kids made from blocks makes you think about today s Bible story. Announce that friends help each other when they work together to clean the room. Compliment the kids as they clean. Gather coats and artwork before the parents arrive. Thank the parents for bringing their child to church today. Mention One Conversation as you hand the Activity Page to each parent. Challenge the parents to use it this week for family Bible study.

19 6:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Kindergarten Loving January 11 & 12, 2014 Unit 1, Session 3 Bible Story: Peter had Breakfast with Jesus. Bible Story Passage: John 21:1-19 Christ Focus: Jesus love never ends. Life Verse: All things work together for good for those who love God. Romans 8:28 Life Point: Jesus showed His love to people. Item 3: Teaching Picture Item 14: Bible Markers Item 24a-b, 25a: Puzzles about Peter Kindergarten Activity Pages Transition Activity Invite boys and girls to work on puzzles during the transition time. If your class has a large floor puzzle, suggest several students work on the puzzle together. Remind the class that we should always show love like Jesus did. Talk About the Bible Story Page 19 Open your Bible to John 21. Ask, Are the things that the Bible tell us true? Yes! You re right they are! Tell the story to the class. Ask for volunteers to pray after today s Bible story. Ask one volunteer to thank God for showing His to love to us. Ask a second volunteer to ask God for help us always show love to others. Art Center: Make a Fishing Game Supplies provided: Large craft sticks, string, foam sticker circles, tiny fish die-cuts, magnetic tape. Preparation needed: Cut 1/4 pieces of magnetic tape so that each child has two pieces each. Place a staple in each fish diecut so that the magnet will have something to attract. Provide each child with a craft stick, 6 of string and foam sticker. Have the child peel the paper from the back of the sticker and place one end of the string on the sticker. Once the string is on the sticker, attach the sticker to the end of the craft stick. Give each child 2 pieces of the magnetic tape. Have the class peel the paper off the back of their pieces of magnetic tape and sandwich the free end of the string between the two sticky sides of the magnetic tape. Give each child 4 tiny fish die-cuts so that they can go fishing with their new fishing tools. Play Who has the Fish? Direct the children to sit in a circle and choose one child to sit in the middle of the circle. The child in the middle should cover her eyes as the children pass a paper fish behind their backs until you signal them to stop. Tell the child in the middle to open her eyes and guess who has the fish. Allow the children to take turns sitting in the middle. Announce that it is time to clean up the class. Thank the children as they clean the class. As parents arrive, help parents gather their child s craft, Activity page and coat. Thank them for coming to class today and you look forward to seeing them again soon!
