2 1. THE WELCOME (Pre-service until class begins) Work together. Romans 8:28 SAY> (As each child enters classroom) Hello. I m glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. (Child unlocks Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of building blocks or building tool.) Let this sticker help you remember to work together. Today s Whisper Verse is work together from Romans 8:28. (Teach Whisper Verse in spoken language and in sign language below.) We call it the Whisper Verse so you can whisper it to others. SIGN LANGUAGE: Work together. Romans 8:28 (For visual demonstrations, see commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm) Each time we say today s Whisper Verse, let s say it with two hand motions: Work Both hands create the letter s hand shape by placing the thumb across the front of a closed fist. Tap right fist on top of left fist. together. Both hands make a fist with the thumb resting on top of the index finger. Place sides of fists together with the outside edge of the thumbs touching each other. Rotate both fists together in a small circle in front of the body. SAY> (After all have arrived) Let s sing the Clean Up Song as we put toys away before Praise Time. (Praise any child who helps. Allow several minutes for clean up.) Clean Up Song : Clean up! Clean up! Everybody, everywhere! Clean up! Clean up! Everybody do your share! (Gather and seat children in Praise Time area.) Page 2 of 10

3 2. THE WORSHIP: Praise Time! (15 minutes) Worship the King Who Builds His Kingdom *Teacher Tip: Play It s Praise Time! as children move to the place for praise songs, offering and puppet sketch. These activities help children identify time set aside for worship. Below are song suggestions to direct focus during Praise Time. SAY> It s Praise Time that means it s time to praise God together. This is a great day to do that! (Sing: This is the Day. ) SAY> We love to praise God with our voices and our offering. Let s do that now as we sing and give our offering. (Sing: When We Walk with the Lord (Trust and Obey.) Collect the offering.) SAY> God loves to see us trust and obey Him. He loves to see us join and praise Him together. And He loves to see us join to work together. That s our Whisper Verse for today: Work together. Let s whisper that together. (Review Whisper Verse together: Work together. Include sign language.) Today s Bible story is about a man named Nehemiah who showed God s people how to work together to rebuild the city wall. SAY> I wonder if our friends Delbert and Lello have ever heard of Nehemiah! Let s call them both to come out for a visit. (Read Chapter 46, Volume 9 from The Adventures o f Delbe rt and Lello or interact with puppets according to Lesson 46, Unit 9 Delbert & Lello puppet script.) SAY> When Nehemiah told God s people to work together to rebuilding the city wall, they obeyed. God blessed them. (Sing: Blessed Are Those. ) SAY> Rebuilding a wall is very hard work. When God s people became tired, God made them strong again. (Sing: I Can Do All Things. ) ASK> After the wall was finished, do you think the people celebrated? (Respond.) Let s celebrate now! 4 3. THE WORD (10 minutes) Nehemiah 1:3b; 2:3-5; 4:3, 6-9, 15-18; 6:15 SAY> Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our CLASSROOM PROMISE. CLASSROOM PROMISE SAY TOGETHER> With my eyes on my teacher; (Point to eyes.) My mouth quiet as can be, (Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign.) I will listen to hear (Cup hand around ear.) How God loves you and me. (Hug self, point to others and then self.) SAY> Last time we learned that God helped Ezra teach the people about God. Today we ll hear how God helped Nehemiah rebuild the city wall. (Handle Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Nehemiah 1:3b.) WATCH THE WORD: NEHEMIAH 1:3b; 2:3-5; 4:3, 6-9, 15-18; 6:15 Read poem below or retell passage in your own words using points of poem as a general guide. To illustrate the story, display a building tool, bricks, or building blocks. (May substitute a photograph of the same items.) Other visual options include craft sample, Color This Story, picture or story cards. Nehemiah asked the king, May I go to my city now? My city gates are ruined. The wall is broken down. The enemies tried to stop Nehemiah, But God s people worked together. They held tools in one hand and spears in the other; God helped them build the best wall ever! ASK> What was wrong with the wall? (It was broken down.) Let s find our answer in the Bible. (Read Nehemiah 1:3b from teacher s Bible.) ASK> What did all the people do to rebuild the wall? (They worked together.) Our Whisper Verse tells us the answer! Let s say it together. ( Work together. Include sign language or hand motions.) Page 4 of 10

5 4. THE WAY: Games and Craft Connection Invite the children to circle area or centers for THE WAY: Bible Story application. Games and craft can be presented at the same time in centers, or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT CONNECTION: NEHEMIAH S TOOL BELT Work Together. Romans 8:28 Purpose: To remind the children of the story of God helping Nehemiah rebuild the city wall. Supplies needed per child: [] Two sturdy sheets of paper [] Scissors [] Tape [] Hole punch [] Yarn [] Crayons or markers Prep Steps: (Prepared before class) [] Draw and cut out a sword shape and a hammer shape. [] To make tool belt: Place paper horizontally. Fold 1/3 of the paper up to create a pocket. Tape both sides of the pocket. [] On the front of the belt, print or write: Nehemiah rebuilds the wall. Nehemiah 1:3b, 4:16-21 [] Punch one hole in each end of the tool belt. [] Cut 20-inch lengths of yarn. Directions for children: 1. Put yarn through the holes in the tool belt. 2. Color the sword and hammer. 3. Teacher or helper ties tool belt around child s waist. 4. Put sword and hammer in the tool belt. Craft Discussion: The city wall was broken! What did the people do to fix it? (They worked together.) That s our Whisper Verse! Let s say it with our motions right now! (Say Whisper Verse together with hand motions.) God wants everyone to work together! Everyone helped rebuild the wall. They carried their tools in one hand. Let s put our hammers in our tool belts. Did the enemy outside the city like the wall? (No.) The people building the wall were ready to the fight the enemy. They held their swords in their other hands. Let s put our swords in our tool belts. Now you are ready to build a wall, too! 6 Games and Craft Connection continued GAME: BUILD THE WALL Work Together. Romans 8:28 Purpose: Children will use their craft tool belts to work together to act out the story of Nehemiah and the people rebuilding the wall. Supplies: [] God s Tool Belt (completed craft from Craft Connection) [] Toy blocks (in a pile on one side of the play area) [] Toy horn (or kazoo or paper tube to use as a toy trumpet) SAY> Let s pretend that I am Nehemiah. Put on your tool belts and let s work together to build this wall. Directions: 1. Help children put on tool belts. 2. Children each take a turn picking up a block and stacking it in a designated place to build a wall. Children remove their hammers from tool belts and pretend to hammer wall into place. 3. While you work, sing this song to the tune of Frere Jacques : Nehemiah, Nehemiah, Build the wall! Build the wall! We will work together! We will work together! Well done! Well done! 4. SAY> Oh no! The enemy wants to knock down our wall! Be ready. If you hear the trumpet, put your hammer back into your tool belt. Then, pull out your sword. 5. Choose one child to be the trumpeter. Child blows toy horn. 6. Children put away their hammers and pull out their swords to fight imaginary enemy. 7. Children return to work on wall. After a few minutes, repeat the steps 6-8. GAME: BALANCE THE BALL Work Together. Romans 8:28 Purpose: Children will work together to balance a ball on top of a sheet. Supplies: [] Bed sheet [] Medium size soft foam or inflated ball SAY> Let s work together to keep this ball on the sheet! Directions: 1. Spread sheet on floor. 2. Children kneel at edge of sheet and grab edge in front of them with both hands. 3. Children practice working together to raise and lower sheet as you direct them. 4. With sheet on the ground, place the ball in the middle of sheet. 5. Guide the children to raise and lower sheet as before, this time working together to keep the ball on sheet. 6. SAY> When we work together, God is so happy! *Teacher Tip: Have children kneel shoulder-to-shoulder. If your sheet is too large for this, tie knots at the corners to make it smaller. If your group is too large to fit around sheet, use two sheets at the same time or have two teams take turns playing the game. Page 6 of 10

7 5. SNACK TIME (3 minutes) Work together. Romans 8:28 Snack Suggestions: Cookies, frosting, drinks, napkins, spoon or plastic knife SAY> Let s sing the Blessing Song to thank God for our blessings including this snack. BLESSING CHANT OR SONG> (Chant this song or sing to the tune Frere Jacques. ) God our Father, God our Father, Once again, once again, Thank you for our blessings. Thank you for our blessings. Amen. Amen. TABLE TALK> (During snack time, review with one or more of the following questions.) Who remembers our Whisper Verse? (Choose a child to demonstrate motions to Whisper Verse: Work together. ) Nehemiah and the people worked together. What did they rebuild? (The city wall.) Let s make our own cookie walls! (Give a few cookies and a spoonful of frosting to each child. Children dip their cookies in frosting or use spoon or fingers to spread frosting on cookie. Stack the next cookie on top of frosted cookie, making cookies stick together like bricks in a wall. Then they can eat their cookie wall.) You can work together like Nehemiah and all the people. Can you work together with your parent and put your toys away? (Yes.) Can you work together with your friend when you play a game? (Yes.) How can you work together with your brother, sister, or cousin? (Children respond.) God wants us all to work together! 6. CIRCLE OF PRAYER (3 minutes) SAY> God made you and He cares for you. He loves to hear you pray with private words or words you say out loud. Let s fold our hands and close our eyes. As I lift up your name to God in heaven, I will lay my hand on your shoulder. Let s pray together. PRAY > Dear God, thank you for making us and loving us. We lift up to You a special prayer for,,, (read every name). We pray for our families and friends. Thank you for teaching us how to love one another. Amen. Page 7 of 10

8 7. FINAL FIVE (Final 5 minutes of class) COMPLETED CRAFT> Thank you for coming today! Take home your Nehemiah s Tool Belt craft. Tell someone about Nehemiah and the people who worked together to rebuild the city wall. PONDER, PRAY & PLAY> (Distribute Ponder, Pray & Play cards if available.) Show this card to your family. Talk about how you can work hard together. PLAY> Visit with the children, review lesson, etc. SING> Sing Bible Memory Verse Song: Blessed Are Those DISMISS> Helper visits with the children as the teacher releases the children to parents. GOT TIME? Got Time? is a resource segment for additional connected activities that may be useful if class time is lengthened. GAME: SAY & DO: NEHEMIAH 1:3b; 2:3-5; 4:3, 6-9, 15-18; 6:15 Purpose: This pantomime version of the Bible Story helps children remember the story details. Supplies: None Directions: With each phrase, the teacher says the phrase and acts it out with hand motions; then repeats the same phrase and motions with the children. Nehemiah asked the king, (Put hands on head as a crown.) May I go to my city now? (Point to self.) My city gates are ruined. (Shake head sadly.) The wall is broken down. (Hands reach high and then point to the floor.) The enemies tried to stop Nehemiah, (Hold palm out as a signal to stop.) But God s people worked together. (Whisper Verse Sign Language.) With tools in one hand and spears in the other; (Palms face upward at waist level.) God helped them make the best wall ever! (Clap hands to celebrate.) Page 8 of 10

9 Got Time? continued GAME: BUILDING THE VERSE Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it. Luke 11:28 Purpose: To help children memorize and review the Unit 9 Bible Memory Verse. Supplies: [] Large toy blocks [] Tape [] Each word of the Bible Memory Verse printed or written on individual strips of paper Prep Steps: [] Tape one word strip on each toy block Directions: 1. Say the Bible Memory Verse, pausing after each word for children to repeat. 2. Give a block to each child and help the children stand in the order of the Bible Memory Verse. (If you have more than 13 children, create two sets of words and blocks and play the game simultaneously. For groups of less than 13, give some children more than one block.) 3. Ask the first child holding the Blessed block to place the block on the ground as the first part of the wall. 4. Have the children say, Blessed. 5. Children continue to add each block and repeat each word until all of the blocks are stacked. GAME: LISTEN AND OBEY Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it. Luke 11:28 Purpose: Children practice obeying God s Word as instructed in the Unit 9 Bible Memory Verse. Supplies: [] Bible marked with the passages in the list below ASK> Jesus says, Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and obey it. That is our Bible Memory Verse. We find God s Words in the Bible. What should we do when we hear words from the Bible? (Listen and obey.) SAY> I am going to read God s Word from the Bible. Then I will ask you about different choices some children made. If the child obeyed God s Word, clap and stand up tall. If the child did not obey God s Word, sit down. Directions: 1. Children stand in a circle as the teacher reads from a Bible in the center of the circle. 2. Read the Bible Verses and examples allowing the children to respond after each example: The Bible says, We will share. (Numbers 10:32) Patti shared her crayons with her friend. Did Patti obey God s Word? Sarah didn t let her friend use her crayons. Did Sarah obey God s Word? The Bible says, Show love. (Hosea 1:7) Bobby hit his sister. Did Bobby obey God s Word? Sammy hugged his mommy. Did Sammy obey God s Word? The Bible says, Do not steal. (Leviticus 19:11a) Billy took Tommy s toy car. Tommy was sad. Did Billy obey God s Word? Molly asked to hold Sally s doll. She waited patiently for her turn to hold the doll. Did Molly obey God s Word? Page 9 of 10

10 Got Time? continued COLOR THIS STORY Coloring sheet: Nehemiah Rebuilds the Wall Discuss Bible Story and play Bible Memory Verse Song as children color. (Coloring can be completed at home if parent arrives.) STORY TIME Gather in a special corner and read a favorite story to the children. This can be a favorite Bible Story, a chapter from The Adventures o f Delbert & Lello, or a storybook about teamwork. PRAISE TIME SONGS Ask children to lead the group in their favorite Praise Time song. Suggestions located in THE WORSHIP segment. REVIEW PONDER, PRAY & PLAY PONDER, PRAY & PLAY Lesson 46 Unit 9 Nehemiah Rebuilds the Wall PONDER! Read Nehemiah 1:3b; 2:3-5; 4:6-9, 15-17; 6:15 with your family. What did Nehemiah and the people do together? The enemy wanted to knock down their wall. How did they stay ready incase the enemy tried to knock down the wall? How can your family work together? PRAY! Pray this prayer each day this week: Lord, thank you for helping Nehemiah and all the people rebuild the wall. Help us to work hard together, too. Amen. PLAY! God wants you to work together. Your family can work together to help other people. Plan a special project. Maybe you have a neighbor who needs their flower beds weeded or their windows washed. Maybe you can bake cookies for someone who is sad to cheer them up. Work together to complete the project you planned.
