3 December 16, 2018, Third Sunday of Advent From the Pastor s Desk Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Three candles, one of which is rose colored. This Sunday we light the rose-colored candle of our Advent wreaths, to mark Gaudete Sunday, which translates as Rejoice ; that s the translation of Gaudete, not Sunday, although we are always called to rejoice on Sundays. As our first candle is called the Prophets Candle, and the Second is the Bethlehem Candle this third candle is referred to as the Shepherds Candle, and how appropriate is the name. or prestige in Jesus time, or in many other times, places or societies, in fact, it was a position held by the poorest in society. Louis L Amour, the great American writer, had taken a position as a shepherd for a time, and while it gave him time to think and write, as well as authentic experience, it did not provide him with much financial support. Friends of mine in Ireland, those who still own sheep, treat their herds as a secondary source of income, while devoting their time and efforts to employment that provides for their families. The idea of sitting out on the edge of the wilderness, away from people, even away from other shepherds, in order to keep flocks separate, especially as they compete for scarce vegetation, can seem isolating and depressing. Added to this the desperation of supporting a family, or even oneself, on one of the worst paying jobs around, increases that depression. For those who have been away from society and civilization, surrounded by the physical darkness of night, the emotional darkness of being isolated, maybe even depression, the light of a fire can bring comfort and hope. It is not too difficult to imagine physical darkness, especially this time of year, in spite of street and house lights casting a glow, these shortest days of the year seem to engulf us. Truthfully, if it were not for the lights of Christmas on houses, and the promise of the coming of Christ s light into the darkness of the world, I would be completely lost in depression and despair. That is not just a commentary on the physical darkness of this time of year, but the spiritual darkness that seems to be overwhelming the world we live in. We do not listen to stories of people struggling with illnesses, addiction, loss of family members and loss of income without being affected by them, especially if these are people we know. While the news on the television and internet may try to provide some lighter fair in the form of human interest, the main content seems paint a picture of the coming Apocalypse. Even in our own parish, with the struggles that we have endured over the past, just when things start improving, it seems someone or something wants to undo all of the good we have done, and we sit isolated, marginalized, victimized and in darkness. But through it all, a flame burns, a light dispels the darkness, allowing us to see, and while it might only appear as outlines and shapes, that light assures us that we will not be swallowed up by darkness. That same message spoken by an angel, one of great joy, to those shepherds in the fields, is held out to us today, here in Patchogue and Holbrook, Medford and Bluepoint, Bellport and Farmingville, a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. This is a message that transports us beyond our fears and depression, because it speaks of the hope that we encounter in God s gift of Himself, of His only begotten Son, who has come among us, to bring salvation. This is an encounter that reassures us that in our illnesses, there is hope, and that in death, there is the promise of the Resurrection; we find in our enslavement to addiction, true freedom as children of God, in our daily struggles to provide for our families, we find encouragement, and knowledge that we are not walking this road alone, but Christ accompanies us on our way. As we begin this last full week of our Advent journey, we take hope in the light of Christ, the radiance of the approaching Christmas, which lightens the gloom, and dispels the darkness which tries to cover us. As a people of God, we approach the coming of the Incarnation of Christ with joy in the knowledge that God is with us, and that He will never leave us, and that darkness and evil shall never overcome the light. Pax, Fr. Henry
4 Third Sunday of Advent December 16, de diciembre de 2018 Tercer Domingo de Adviento REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 49:2, 8-10; Ps 72:1-4ab, 7-8, 17; Mt 1:1-17 Tuesday: Jer 23:5-8; Ps 72:1-2, 12-13, 18-19; Mt 1:18-25 Wednesday: Jgs 13:2-7, 24-25a; Ps 71:3-4a, 5-6ab, 16-17; Lk 1:5-25 Thursday: Is 7:10-14; Ps 24:1-6; Lk 1:26-38 Friday: Sg 2:8-14 or Zep 3:14-18a; Ps 33:2-3, 11-12, 20-21; Lk 1:39-45 Saturday: 1 Sm 1:24-28; 1 Sm 2:1, 4-8abcd; Lk 1:46-56 Sunday: Mi 5:1-4a; Ps 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19; Heb 10:5-10; Lk 1:39-45 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Third Sunday of Advent; Las Posadas begins Tuesday: International Migrants Day Friday: St. Peter Canisius; Winter begins Las Posadas Throughout the world, there are many different traditions associated with Christmas. Las Posadas is celebrated throughout Latin America. "Posada" is Spanish for "inn." Over the course of nine nights, local groups reenact the Holy Family's search for lodging in Bethlehem. Children dress as Mary and Joseph, angels, shepherds, and Wise Men. They go from home to home singing Christmas carols throughout the neighborhood. After several "rejections," the final home welcomes the group for a party. Las Posadas is a social event, a family gathering, and a moral lesson. Las Posadas reminds participants of the importance of hospitality and welcome to those in need. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
