1 FELLOWSHIP MESSENGER Dave s Devotional The season of Advent, which comes from the Latin word adventus meaning coming or visit," begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year for Christians. Liturgical is a word that comes from liturgy, which means the forms and functions of public worship. During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of those long ago for a Messiah and our own longing for, and need of, forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning. Even as we look back and celebrate the birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, we also look forward anticipating the second coming of Christ as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first coming. As we enter this season of Advent, I share with you these words from Saint Gregory of Nyssa as he discussed the subject matter of perfection in Christians. His words are as follows: The life of the Christian has three distinguishing aspects: deeds, words and thought. Thought comes first, then words, since our words express openly the interior conclusions of the mind. Finally, after thoughts and words, comes action, for our deeds carry out what the mind has conceived. So when one of these results in our acting or speaking or thinking, we must make sure that all our thoughts, words and deeds are controlled by the divine ideal, the revelation of Christ. For then our thoughts, words and deeds will not fall short of the nobility of their implications. What then must we do, we who have been found worthy of the name of Christ? Each of us must examine our thoughts, words and deeds, to see whether they are directed toward Christ or are turned away from him. During the season of Advent, may our thoughts, words and deeds reflect the love of our Savior whose birth we remember and celebrate in the weeks to come. With the joy of serving Christ together, The Rev. Dr. David A. Marcus, Jr. CANDLE LIGHTERS FOR ADVENT December 2 December 9 December 16 December 23 December 24 (4 PM) December 24 (7 PM) Eleanor Butner Keenan Newsome Hunter Riddle Bella Newsome Tinley Riddle Kyra Smith ========================================= 2019 UNITY PRAYER WATCH The Moravian Church has experienced spiritual renewal and strength through a covenant of prayer. In 1727, the church in Herrnhut, Germany covenanted for an hourly intercession: which continued for 100 years with great blessing to the entire Moravian Church. As we prepare for observing the prayer watch across our province, please consider opportunities for members and friends to pray at home or coming to the church to pray during the assigned period of prayer. Christ Church has been assigned the date of Saturday, January 5, 2018 from Midnight to 8 AM as our local observance. A complete list of 2019 Unity Prayer Watch Topics will be on the counter outside the sanctuary on December 30. ===================================== PLEASE NOTE OUR MAILING ADDRESS The Christ Moravian Church mailing address and the address for Ray of Hope-Michael Tesh mail is: 919 W.
