1 Welcome to "Heard on the Hill"! This is an blast to keep all our friends and members informed of all the activities here at Willistown UMC. Please let editor, Sara Beam, know of any team meetings or events of interest that we can pass on to both the church community and our neighbors in the geographic community. Sunday is Communion Sunday and the First Sunday in Advent. We will begin our Advent Season with the traditional candle lighting for the Advent Wreath. It is also Salvation Army Food Cupboard Sunday. Remember to bring your nonperishable food for those in need in our area. This Sunday John Coakley and the Chester County Singers will be our choir and will perform for us at the 10:30 service. John Coakley will also be doing a solo. What a beautiful way to begin our Advent season. Tell all your friends that the Chester County Singers will also present a Concert This Tuesday, December 4 th at 7:00 PM here at Willistown! Refreshments will follow. Please join us for more songs of the season. UPCOMING Thanks to Bill Snyder for filling in last Sunday. Pastor Jim will be back this Sunday, December 2, Thanks to the Hilltoppers for trimming the tree and to the Top of the Hill Gang for greening the church. Sunday is the last day to order Christmas Flowers! Forms are on the back table. Checks go to Pat Roelofs before you leave Sunday. We hope you can leave flowers through Christmas Eve to decorate our church. The Greenleigh Chorale will perform the Messiah by Handel this Sunday afternoon, December 2 nd, at 3:00 pm at St. Agnes Church in West Chester. Our own Sarah Cass will be the alto soloist! Salvation Army Bells: The date will be Friday, December 14 th at West Goshen Acme. There are 2-hour periods starting at 8am running to 8pm. There may be openings left, so contact Curt Wise at cmacwise@gmail.com or December s METHODIST BREAKFAST is NEXT Week, December 9 th. Martina Keogan, the artist whose program helped us learn about art and why we may prefer one painting over another, will be here. She will be discussing Religious Symbolism of Art. Don t miss this great event! Breakfast is at 7:45 am and program at 8:00 am. Tell Gil Fell if you can attend. On December 16 th, our own wonderful choir will perform The Christmas Cantata, Mary Did You Know? at the 10:30 service. Don t miss this annual musical event! Christmas Eve Schedule: 4:00 pm Traditional Service with Choir and Candle lighting 6:30 pm Contemporary Service with Band and Candle lighting Again, we will put out luminaries at dusk. We will need volunteers to fill bags, put them out and clean up after the 2 nd service. 1

2 Blood Drive at Advent: In case you were unable to donate at our blood drive, Advent Lutheran Church is having a blood drive on December 31, 2018 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. All donors will receive a Red Cross T-shirt! Contact Terri Dettinger at tmdettinger1@gmail.com. Willistown UMC Blood Drive: Our fall blood drive total was 19 units. This is a bit disappointing, but our church continues to make a contribution. Our donors included many members and friends of our church: Sara Beam, Curt Wise, Dick Wright, Bill Bowers (Double Red), Jim Wilkin, Jane VanZandt, Gil Fell and Lou Malfara. Our Greeters/Volunteers were Barbara Gorham, Sara Beam, Dick Wright, Barbara Fell and Don Stapleton. We enlist members of our church to be greeters and work the snack (recovery) table. Their enthusiasm is infectious and speaks well of our church. Special thank you to Barbara Gorham who posted our blood drive on Facebook. Of interest: In the past 12 years our church has had 25 blood drives totaling 517 units including 37 Double Reds. Please mark your calendar ~ our next Blood Drive is July 19, The Christmas Card Tree is Up! Every year since sometime in the 1970s, our church has had a Christmas Card Tree, and we are doing it again this year. Rather than sending a Christmas card to our friends in the congregation, we put a card on the Christmas Card Tree. Our Christmas wishes to our church family will be listed in the bulletin on Christmas Eve. The money we save in cards and stamps (and time) we donate to charity. We will announce shortly to whom the money will be given. Please bring a card to decorate our Christmas Card Tree. There will be a paper punch and yarn for hanging available. Follow this energy saving tip to have your home ready for when the cold weather while shrinking your carbon footprint at the same time. 120-degrees Fahrenheit Many water heaters default to 140-degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) when they ship from the manufacturer, but temps that high pose not only high energy costs but scalding risks to your family. Most water heaters operate just as efficiently at 120-degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius), and the lower temperature could help increase the lifespan of the heater. For every 10 degrees you lower the water temperature, can save between 3 and 5 percent in utility costs. Additionally, wrapping an insulating blanket around your water heater will help save energy this winter, possibly as much as 4 to 9 percent in water heating costs. Find them in your local hardware store. 2
