Clergy Certification Training The Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community is hosting a one day Clergy Certification Training Session at Trinity United Methodist Church on Friday, February 4, 2011 beginning at 8:00am for breakfast and registration. The sessions will run until approximately 2:30 pm with lunch being provided. There will be a Love offering taken to help underwrite the cost of the 2 meals. Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 5613 Western Avenue, Knoxville, TN A bit about the session; Clergy persons are critical participants in the Walk to Emmaus and in Chrysalis. In keeping with our mission of Empowering Christian leaders through Emmaus and Chrysalis to be the hands and feet of Christ, local Boards have the responsibility of identifying and equipping clergy to serve as Weekend Spiritual Directors and Assistant Spiritual Directors. Clergy training events are one of the ways that clergy can be more fully equipped to serve. The training helps clergy understand the role of clergy in Walks and Flights. In the training they can grow in clarity about what is expected of clergy and in who is qualified to be called clergy. The training gives insights into the history of the movements, the theology that under pins both and a glimpse of the flow of the three days of a Walk or Flight. These training events (regional and local ones) are being done with the hope that in the near future every clergy who serves on a Walk or Flight will have attended one of the trainings. Please gsmec@comcast.net by Monday, January 31, 2011, to let us know you will be attending so we can prepare for breakfast and lunch. Thank you, Mike Ooten BEATITUDES OF GOOD SPONSORSHIP Blessed art thou, when after much prayer, thou gives thy chosen candidate a loving, caring invitation to attend the Walk to Emmaus; Blessed art thou when thou answer-eth all questions, and invite-eth the spouse, and make-eth thy Pilgrim at ease with the Journey; Blessed art thou when thou securest the 12 most special letters for the conference room packet, and bring-eth them to camp with thy Pilgrim on the opening night, for great shall be thy reward in the community; Blessed art thou when thou prepare-eth a table before thy Pilgrim on the way to camp, and when thou make-eth thy Pilgrim to lie down on the bed thou hast made, for then thy Pilgrim shalt be blessed; Blessed art thou when thou art a servant, and make-eth sacrifices for thy Pilgrim s family, to mow grass, to babysit, or to take a hot meal; Blessed art thou when thou go-eth to thy Pilgrim s Candlelight, and hold-eth thy candle before thy face, and give-eth the I love you sign; Blessed art thou when thou bring-eth thy Pilgrim home, and share-eth all that thou knoweth about Emmaus for such is the Community of Emmaus; Blessed art thou when thou remember-eth thy Pilgrim in their Fourth Days, with small gifts of agape and phone calls, for this is the beginning of the Journey; Blessed art thou when thou take-eth thy Pilgrim to Fourth Day, and help to find a Reunion Group, and help thy Pilgrim to sponsor their first Pilgrim. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great will be the numbers of wisely sponsored grand-pilgrims who shall come to thee from thy Pilgrim!! * Modified by Mike Ooten from article by Lynda Bottcher, Community Lay Director, Central Alabama Emmaus Community Questions or suggestions for future articles, contact marcia_malin1953@yahoo.com

From Community Lay Director HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Our community has just completed its twentieth year. WOW! Look for our formal celebration and acknowlegment at a future gathering. New Year s is traditionally a time for reflecting on the past year and making resolutions to make changes and improvements in ourselves for the coming year. Paul reminds us in Romans 12:2 that we are to...be transformed by the continual renewal of our minds... And II Cor. 5:17 says, if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come. Do you need something fresh and new in your life? A little over a year ago, I found myself becoming a lethargic, sideline Christian, becoming less active and involved in my church and community. It took a conscious effort and decision to make a change. For starters, I offered my services to the GSMEC board, then a few months later, I heard about a bold new effort to bring new life and excitement to a struggling church. The Maryville district asked the church I was attending for volunteers to transfer their membership to this new (to me) church. About two dozen of us made the move. We were all warmly received at our new church. We learned the traditions of this church and brought with us several new programs. I joined the bell choir (something I had quit a couple years earlier at my old church), then I joined the choir (something I d never done) and next week I start teaching Sunday School (something I haven t done in years). At times I wonder if I haven t bit off more than I can swallow, but I have certainly gotten off the sideline. As we begin this new year, is there an old habit you need to replace with something new. Get off the sideline and join me and Paul as in Phil. 3:13 [we] forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead. Now if I can just lose this thirty pound spare tire this year. De Colores, Steve Larrabee A NEW YEAR It is never too late to begin a new habit - or to re-covenant our side of the promise with God - or to name anew the responsibilities we have as faithful people. The following serves as a model for living our faith in the New Year 2011: Mend a quarrel Seek out a forgotten friend Dismiss suspicion; replace it with trust Give a soft answer Encourage youth Keep a promise Find the time Forego a grudge Forgive an enemy Listen Apologize if you are wrong Try to understand Think first of someone else Appreciate Be kind; be gentle Laugh a little Welcome a stranger Speak your love Speak it again Speak it still again De Colores, Don Thomas

A Moment of Prayer Do you remember seeing the 72-hour Prayer Vigil on your walk? All those people took 30 minute times blocks out of their day to pray for you. Prayer is what undergirds the Emmaus Walks and Chrysalis Flights. Not just the 72- hour Vigil, but constant prayer. We need to keep not only the community in our prayers, but those members of the teams and the pilgrims who will be on those walks. Prayfully consider someone you might sponsor for a walk. There are also many prayer concerns throughout the community. Those who are sick, those facing surgeries, those who are experiencing financial difficulties, those who have worries they may not verbalize to anyone, and many others. We need to keep all those in our prayers. We are a community of many hands and feet, and voices...we are also a community of prayer. Listen for God s still small voice, He will often prompt you to pray for someone. Listen and follow His promptings. Father God, give us ears to hear Your promptings to intercede and the will to obey. Amen. What s Going On Around The Community Do you have something you want to share with the community. Is something happening at your church you want to share with community members? Do you have a joy, a concern, a prayer request, or just want to communicate with your Christian brothers and sisters, please the article to: jhensle5ut@gmail.com Send as a word document attached to the , or include it in the body of the . We would love to know what s happenin around the community! & Journey MERRY CHRYSALIS/CHRISTMAS I hope everyone is doing well, and probably by the time you see this Christmas will have come and gone. Hopefully the spirit of Christmas, however, and the hope of Christ will be with you each day of the holidays and the coming year. I am writing this on December 21, still worrying about things I need to get done to be ready for the world s Christmas. I am reminded of my friend Charlie Brown, looking for the true meaning of Christmas. The scripture from Luke 2, so beautifully spoken by Linus, puts things in perspective. For unto us a Savior is born who is Christ the Lord. This is good news of great joy, for all people. Like Charlie Brown, I need to get away from all the trappings: decorations, presents, parties, fretting, and focus on the true meaning of Christmas. I am going to concentrate on that, hope you can too. Merry Christmas and blessings to all our Chrysalis/Emmaus friends. Chrysalis is coming soon too, be preparing for sponsorship and give one of the greatest gifts you can. Love and Peace. Scooter Deadline for the February Newsletter is January 15th Please attach a word document, or type it in the , or you may bring a hand written article to the gathering. addresss :jhensle5ut@gmail.com

A Celebration! Come Join In! In the spring of 1991, the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community held its first two Walks. That means that we re 20 years old and that s something to celebrate! We have begun making plans to have a birthday party for GSMEC later this year. We ll recognize pilgrims from each Walk, re-create some Saturday evening entertainment (Raisinettes? Sister Act?), and worship together. We ll need lots of help. If you re interested, please contact Nancy Kissell or kissell@chartertn.net. Nancy Sevier Co. Area Mini-Gathering The food was delicious (as usual), the attendees lovely to see (as usual), and the fellowship uplifting (as ever). We were small in number, due to several factors.the cold weather, illness, and other commitments. I will be more timely with the reminder for the February gathering. Linda has graciously offered to have a musical program for us. Her programs are always special. Testimony was given by Joella, unrehearsed but from the heart. We shared, prayed, and communed. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, February 26 th at 5:30. We will again meet at FUMC Sevierville. Some prayer concerns we shared were: Charlie s niece has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It returned after 13 years. Lou Harrison is also under the weather as well as Annie Waddell. Louise Moffett struggles with constant pain in her hands. She shared a joy with us all. Her daughter is planning to make her walk this spring. Please let me know when you hear of a prayer concern or wish to share a joy or prayer request. Also, if you know of someone who is not getting information from our group please send me their address. Love and Peace to all, DeColores, Brooke Sponsorship I recently got an from someone who d been on a Chrysalis weekend many years ago (in another area) and wants to sponsor someone. He wants to get active in our community, and he wanted to know what to say to his prospective pilgrims. By his letter, it is obvious he d prayed about it and so I thought I d share something from the UPPER ROOM under Things to tell a Pilgrim (or essentials). 1. Give them What is Emmaus (or other basic reading material you might have) to read, and return to you If the person is married, explain and keep in mind the equal commitment rule. Explain the Walk to both of them and let them come to a common understanding of what the weekend can do for them and their marriage. Explain the sleeping arrangements, as well as the arrangement for showering. Explain how meals are taken care of and that special diets can be accommodated. Let them know that their participation is expected for all of the activities from Thursday evening to Sunday evening. Let them know that there is no time for anything except the activities no work from the office, reading, etc. Everyone should bring their own bedding, pillow, towels, comfortable clothes and personal items. No dress clothes are necessary. He/she should expect no contact with their family or business except for emergencies. 8. -Upper Room (Day Four: The Pilgrim s Continued Journey, a booklet now available at Gatherings and given to new Pilgrims also has an excellent chapter on Sponsorship you can review.) Next month, we ll include Things you might want to tell your pilgrim --- I have a list from Upper Room but would love to include your thoughts!! De Colores, Marcia

From Community Lay Director Sponsorship As Discipleship A few months ago, I began a study called Discipleship Essentials, by Greg Ogden. In the forward to the book, the author quotes a survey of Christian groups by Michael Wilkins that says that people will readily identify themselves as Christians, but be quite reluctant to call themselves disciples. if I identify myself as a disciple, then I am making a statement about the quality of my followership. Being a Christian is a statement about what Christ has done for me; being a disciple is a statement about what I am doing for Christ. I have been thinking of sponsorship as a discipling process, where we invite someone else to join us on our walk with Christ. Proper sponsorship entails a commitment to the person being sponsored. It begins with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to help guide you in the selection of a candidate to become a pilgrim. After securing the application, the sponsor prepares for the weekend by preparing agape gifts, securing agape letters from loved ones and making sure they are available to support the pilgrim s family and to attend sponsors hour, candlelight and closing. The commitment doesn t end when the walk is over. The sponsor then brings his pilgrim to the Fourth Day meeting and the first gathering after the walk. And finally, this sponsorship/discipleship process is complete when the sponsor invites the pilgrim to join in a reunion group so that the sponsor and pilgrim can join in a partnership of growing in their faith journey together. See how this compares to Greg Ogden s invitation to have someone join him in Discipleship Essentials. Disciples are made in relationships through personal invitation(s) When I begin a new discipleship group of three or four, I approach a potential participant only after having prayed for a sense of call to this person. I say to them something like, I have been praying about who to ask to join with me and a couple of others on a journey together as we grow to be followers of Christ. The Lord has put you on my heart. Would you come along with me as we grow together over the next year to live more fully into what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? The spring flights and walks are quickly coming upon us. You were probably thinking of someone you would like to invite while you were reading this. Make the commitment now. Decide to share your discipleship journey to become like Christ with someone else. It s easy to call ourselves Christians, the challenge we face is to live up to being called disciples. Applications are available at De Colores, Steve Larrabee

& Journey From Lay Directors of the Chrysalis/Journey Flights I am so very blessed to be God s Lay Director on the next Chrysalis Flight #58 and Journey #16. It is a privilege to be of service in this way. I love the teenagers, both on the team and the caterpillars to come. I pray that all of us will be touched in a new way by God and moved to be of further service. He is truly wonderful and I am humbled by the opportunity that I ve been given. Please continue to pray for all of us and come be a part of it with us. God bless all of you and everything you do in this most effective ministry! Debbie Pope I would love to tell the community that everything has gone smoothly thus far. I d love to report that I have remained calm and trusted God to work His will every time things didn t work out the way I had planned. I would be thrilled to inform everyone that the team is complete and we are all set, but I can t. Even at this late date, I still have stubborn loose ends to deal with. That s the bad news. The good news is that I am amazed as always at just how quickly and easily the team members have grown close. As a beautiful reminder of just how God intended His Church to function, we are indeed many parts (with different strengths and weaknesses), but truly one body. Our meetings have been fun, but focused and efficient. The talks we have previewed fit together in such a way that can only be attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit. Our desire is to see the caterpillars experience God s love in a tangible way, to realize that He is not far off but right here, to move from knowing about Him to truly falling in love with Him, and to recognize that He has a plan and a purpose for their lives. I am so thankful to be able to serve with such a loving and devoted group of men and young men. Your love, support, and of course your prayers, are greatly appreciated. Fly with Christ! Scott Spreading The Word Hey all! Thought you would be glad to know that GSMCC will once again be spreading the Word by giving away Bibles at Resurrection and Divine Rhythm over the next few weeks. We are taking 900 Bibles to give away to youth and young adults at these events. This is a great outreach of our ministry and gives us a chance to change lives. We also get to speak to persons about Chrysalis, Journey and Emmaus in the process. Be in prayer for all the youth and young adults attending these events. You would be surprised at the number of persons who come up to our table and share stories of Chrysalis/Emmaus experiences. Thanks to all who donated to make the Bible giveaway possible. Love and Peace. Scooter Chrysalis Prayer Vigil I need a little help to complete the Chrysalis 72 hour prayer vigil. Would you consider signing up to join this vigil? Carter, please prepare the secret weapon! Please forward the Prayer Vigil link along to your friends and family in Emmaus\ Chrysalis. Alllow them the opportunity to join in this amazing ministry during the February 19-21st flights! JOY, David Ault

Sponsorship According to Upper Room, these are things listed under THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO TELL A PILGRIM: 1. Tell the person what the 3 days meant to you and what it did for your relationship to Jesus Christ. 2.Tell what impact the Walk hadin your family, church, job and community. 3. Tell how it changed your priorities. 4. Tell how you keep that feeling alive through 4th day activities of reunion groups, gatherings and serving during subsequent walks. 5.Tell how each weekend is unique but that each person seems to find exactly what God wants that person to experience. 17 From Community Lay Director Reunion Groups and Sanctification Sanctifying grace is the work of the Holy Spirit in rooting out sin moving us from imputed righteousness (what Christ did for us) to imparted righteousness (what Christ does in us). While it is possible for this to be solely a partnership between an individual and the Holy Spirit, it is much more effective in the setting of a reunion group. The group reunion should consist of two to six persons who meet on a regular basis for the purpose of supporting and praying for each other in living a gracefilled life. There should be an element of accountability both for attendance and for follow-up on our stated plan for each week. As we meet regularly and share our piety, study and action, we learn from each other s experiences and are challenged to meet the goals we have set for ourselves in purifying our lives and serving our families, our churches and our communities in Christ s love. I have been part of a reunion group for fifteen years now and the growing in faith and the process of sanctification continue. The sanctifying grace talk tells us that since God is infinite, our opportunities to grow in grace are also infinite. It is a process that is ongoing. The rewards are tremendous. We become better husbands and wives, better children and parents, and better servants to our world. Just as iron sharpens iron so it is in a reunion group, each of the members helps the others in our growth and maturity in our gracefilled lives. If you do not have a reunion group, come to the next gathering and find a group to join or start someone to start a new group with. The next gathering is March 12th at Trinity UMC on Western Ave. I will see you there. De Colores, Steve Larrabee

May 2011 May Gathering! First, what a celebration we had at our April Gathering at Trinity, we easily had about 140 folks there, and we had great attendance from the new pilgrims who also attended their 4th Day meetings right before the gathering. We had great fellowship, food, praise, worship, and Communion, and thanks to Ken Abbott for serving us. And thanks also to those pilgrims who shared their 4thays with us. Our prayers are with all the new pilgrims. Our May Gathering will be at Wesley Woods in Townsend, on Saturday May 14. We will have access to the pavilion and the camp from 3:00 on, so plan on coming early and getting some hiking in! For the May Gathering we will be doing our usual thing, but if you are new to the Community, here s the agenda: plan on bringing a covered dish, dessert, or chips and drinks, and we will visit and fellowship and have dinner in the pavilion starting at 6:30. We will then have a time of praise and worship right there in the pavilion, followed by prayer time, a 4th Day speaker, and hopefully ending with Communion. Please stay tuned to your newsletter, and come to the May Gathering to find out more about the upcoming Gathering schedule. The proposed dates for the rest of the year (put them on that calendar right now so you won t forget!) are: May 14 Wesley Woods June 11 Trinity UMC July 9 TBD Aug. 13 Central UMC (20 year GSMEC Anniversary Party!) Sept. 10 Oakes Corn Maze Oct. 8 Fairview UMC in Maryville Nov. 12 TBD Dec. 10 TBD We are still welcoming anyone that feels called to present how their walk with Christ is continuing, as a Fourth Day speaker. Sharing our witness to each other is a great way to strengthen the body of Christ, and embolden us to share it with those outside the body. Make plans right now, to come and attend in April, and think of someone you would love to see from your walk and invite them! Please put all of these dates on your calendar, and plan on attending as many gatherings as you can. All members of the Emmaus and Chrysalis communities are invited. If you have any questions or suggestions, please send them to me at tdunaway@ frontiernet.net. Wear your name buttons, and see you there!

Community Spiritual Director IT AIN T OVER Welcome new community members! How are you feeling? What are you thinking about? How are you acting? The Walk is over, or is it? I think of the two on the road to Emmaus after Easter. They were talking about what had happened, and in a meal they recognized Jesus alive! What seemed to be over was really just beginning. An Emmaus Walk is a glimpse of Easter. We see how Christ s crucifixion and resurrection are for us, and how His victorious act of love changes lives. In the 13th century, when the Venetian traveler Marco Polo came back from the Orient, he told stories of wonders he had seen and marvelous cities he had visited. Because these things were far beyond the imagination of his people they began to accuse him of lying. Finally, they ridiculed everything he tried to say. When he was dying at the age of 70 they asked him to confess his lies, since he was about to face God. Marco Polo s last answer was, I never told the half of it. As Resurrection people we may not knowthe half of it. But what we know is worth celebrating and living and sharing. Tell the Story! Share the joy of it. Keep the Spirit alive in your own life and extend it to others. The world desperately needs disciples whose hearts burn within them to spread the Good News. No, it ain t over. Because of Easter our walk is just beginning! 22 From Community Lay Director Calling All Leaders If you ve been on a Chrysalis Flight or an Emmaus Walk, I m talking to you, yes, you. If you ve been on a Flight or a Walk, then you are someone in whom your sponsor saw some leadership potential. What? You don t feel like a leader? You have doubts and fears about your ability to lead? Who are you listening to? What is the source of your identity? We all are assaulted with those fears and doubts, those lies of the enemy. Satan will try to tell you that you cannot do it, that you don t have the skills or the ability. God takes our availability and our willingness to serve and equips us with the ability to complete the task at hand. Paul said in Romans 8:37 that we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us. If our identity is in ourselves, we will find that we are weak, subject to temptations and human foibles. We are lazy, tired, overworked, etc. We can come up with an endless list of excuses for not being all we were meant to be. But if our identity is in Christ, we are fearless, full of love, ambition, energy, peace, patience, kindness, and all the other fruits of the Spirit. As Neil Anderson says in Victory Over the Darkness, The only identity equation that works in God s kingdom is you plus Christ equals wholeness and meaning. If you have been asked to be part of an upcoming team and your first thoughts were about all your shortcomings and weaknesses, then I challenge you to get your mind off of who you are in and of yourself and remember who you are in Christ. The Emmaus experience is one of progressive servanthood. Almost every time we are asked to serve, we will be asked to step into a new role, one we have not held before. Maybe we were on the Agape team before, but now we are asked to take the lead role and direct others. Or if we were in the conference room as an assistant table leader, now we will serve as a table leader, or maybe this will be the first time to give a talk. We will always be challenged to grow. This is what I am finding to be so rewarding about accepting new challenges, it s that it requires us to seek a new and stronger dependence on God for the equipping and developing of our character. I always thought that the weekends were all about the experience of the pilgrims, but I m appreciating more and more seeing the growth of each member of the community who accepts the call to serve. Say Yes, and grow with Christ. De Colores, Steve Larrabee

Men s Emmaus Walk #85 Walk 85 was filled with the presence of the Lord in an extraordinary way. From My New Friend on Thursday through closing on Sunday afternoon, the pilgrims and team were open to the agape love of God. Our spiritual director, Reverend Tim Stallings, brought his loving and guiding attitude as he always does for the walks he leads. Dying moments was especially moving as ALL of the pilgrims and team members really opened themselves to the Lord. It lasted almost 3 ½ hours if that tells you anything. We had a number of pilgrims who had received the call to ministry prior to the walk. This provided for some in-depth and focused table discussions after the talks. All tables were highly interactive and really got into the artistic impressions. There were an unusually large number of skits on Friday evening that demonstrated a real embracing of the presence of the Holy Spirit. The posters and poems were pretty cool too. One team even wrote a marine marching cadence. We also had the honor of Ms. Lynn Hutton serving as one of our Assistant Spiritual Directors. I understand that only one other men s walk has had a female clergy participate. Lynn gave the Obstacles to Grace talk and added an element of class to which men s walks are unaccustomed. She also gave the entire community a treat when she played that beautiful pipe organ for one of the musical offerings at closing. It is my prayer that this will not be the last men s walk to which a female clergy is invited. Speaking of music, I would be remiss if I didn t mention Lee & Daniel Bell and Mark Lassen of our music team. They rehearsed for many hours prior to the walk and it was obvious. They brought a variety of musical offerings with them; from Wesleyan hymns to modern praise and even a little blues. Gentlemen Thank you for your service. Many thanks to the community for their showering of prayers and support. Many people helped behind the scenes in the kitchen, on the agape team, the 72-hour prayer vigil, send-off, candlelight and closing. As we all know, these walks could never be what they are without the tremendous support staff that goes largely unseen. These servants are like the wind, you never see them, but you know they re there. Five years ago, when I was a pilgrim on walk 65, I would never have dreamed that I would have the honor of being a Lay Director. I give the credit to all who have helped with all of the walks that have taken place since then. God s grace is for all to receive. DeColores, Gary Beck, Lay Director, GSMEC Walk #85. Women s Emmaus Walk #86 GREETINGS FROM WALK 86 LAY DIRECTOR I am still in awe and amazement at the glorious works of our Lord and Savior, to see first hand the walls come down during Table Discussions and at Dying moments. When we had breakthrough during the Priorities talk I looked at my Leadership Team and said we best hold on. I have worked walks before but never really had as much of myself invested and God blessed me immeasurably, I have never felt as much Love in all my life Walk 86 was met with a lot of struggles in formation but God proved Victorious and placed the Team as he saw fit and knew exactly who needed to hear from each Clergy and Lay person. I am still very humbled to think myself worthy to serve and will cherish the love of community and pilgrims for many days to come and will continue to praise God for calling me to serve. We have begun making plans to have a birthday party for GSMEC later this year. We ll recognize pilgrims from each Walk, re-create some Saturday evening entertainment (Raisinettes? Sister Act?), and worship together. We ll need lots of help. If you re interested, please contact Nancy Kissell or kissell@ chartertn.net. 26 Upcoming Flights & Walks Our next Chrysalis/Journey Flights and Emmaus Walks are not that far off. Chrysalis/Journey - Labor Day Weekend Men s Walk #87 - Sept 29-Oct 2 Women s Walk 88 - Nov 3-6 The first thing we need is participants. Prayerfully consider sponsoring a youth or adult on one of these next weekends. Get the applications in early, we don t want to have to cancel any of these. The next thing we need for the weekends are Agape gifts. Now is the time to start making those gifts. Also remember that there is always need for Agape food on the weekend. Then during the weekend there is always a need for help in the kitchen and dinning room to prepare and serve meals. This is a wonderful time to be an example of a servant. Think about all the people who served you on your weekend. Start now praying for the Chrysalis/Journey Butterflies and Emmaus Walk Pilgrims and the teams for each of these events. It takes a lot of people, a lot of work, and a lot of prayer for the completion of a weekend. So start now and pray for these teams as they prepare for their events. DeColores to one and all!

Community Lay Director s Message Where Are They Now? Are you still in touch with your sponsor, your table leader, how about your assistant table leader? If you have worked in the conference room as a table leader or assistant, do you remember the other people at your table? Where are they now? We are planning a big party, celebration, history review of the first twenty years of the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community on August 13th at Central UMC. What a great time to reconnect with those folks from your walk(s). Give them a call, tell them you ll be at the gathering then and invite them to join you there. One great resource for looking up members of the community is the GSMEC website. Go to click on Emmaus, then click IMS database and then, unless you have changed your address or password, enter the you used as a pilgrim and for the password, fill in the blank in the following phrase, the is vested across the blue sky. Then click on community, directory and there you go. You can also check out the You button to see what we have on file for your information and make corrections. We look forward to seeing you all there at the August gathering. If you want to get in practice for August, call a friend and come to the July gathering at Trinity UMC on Western Ave in Knoxville on the 9th of July. Now let me practice what I preach, Joe Mower, Freddie Cogburn, Ken Oakes, Dave Gass, Dave Amos and a bunch more of you guys, expect a call from me. Let me not forget my table leader, Bill Coward, you are invited to the August 13 gathering. Sponsorship Wanna be a good sponsor? Don t forget to review CHAPTER EIGHT in Day Four: The Pilgrim s Continued Journey! Think about what your sponsor did that added to your experience, but REMEMBER, it is your pilgrim s weekend - make it special for THEM! You are not trying to relive your weekend. Enhance your pilgrim s experience by thinking of their uniqueness to God, and PRAY for guidance!! I asked several members what their sponsor (s) had done during their weekend that made a difference. Some responses were: My sponsor made sure I had my Mountain Dew! To see my sponsor s smile at Candlelight was all it took! The letters! Oh, those special letters! I got some I just couldn t believe! My sponsor called my family to see if they needed anything! Are you reflecting on your weekend? Good memories? Make sure your pilgrim has them, too! Decolores! It will be a great time to re-connect! And to say thanks for all that He has accomplished through our Emmaus and Chrysalis Communities! Community Lay Director In Paul s time, he knew that there were places he would visit, friends he would make, but never see again. Distances were too great and his time too limited for him to return to each place he had been. Even here in the United States, in the not too distant past, people had to leave behind friends and family as they journeyed to new places. A move on the wagon trains headed west meant never seeing loved ones again. The distance was too great to return home. Think about the friends you made on your Walk to Emmaus and the people you have met since then, as you have helped with other Walks. Unlike Paul and other men and women on journeys in the past, Knoxville is just a hop-skip-and-ajump from any town in Tennessee, the Carolinas, Ohio We can return to the places of our past. Is there a cloak you need to come and collect? We welcome you to come to our August gathering, where we will celebrate 20 years of the Walk to Emmaus in the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community. Come rediscover what you may have left behind! De Colores, Mary Larrabee

Agapé We would like to invite anyone interested in serving on an agape team for one of the future walks to please contact us at or This is one of the most rewarding things I think I have ever done to serve the Lord. It is an experience you won t forget. If you can t serve on a team maybe you can serve at some of the meals or with set up and take down. There are many ways to serve, just choose which way you think would work for you. Just come and join the fun and fellowship. DeColores Tommy and Kathy Enos Sponsorship Being a good sponsor can mean sharing in the details of your pilgrim s planning of his (her) weekend. Go over the application with them. Make sure they re aware that pre-planning can add some comfort to their journey. Special sleeping arrangements? Dietary and medication concerns? These are to be addressed on the application BEFORE the walk so the team can have bedding arranged and special food purchased. Make sure they understand the fee and it is paid at time of application (or arrangements made). It is very easy to accommodate everyone with advance notice, and it avoids last minute anxiety and lessens hair pulling by team members trying to hustle to make every pilgrim feel special. It is also a very good idea to inform them of the showers, their good points (be creative) and bad (be honest). Also, let them know that if they have any questions, you (and WE) are available. Good sponsoring! De Colores! Marcia Malin

Community Lay Director s Message It s Harvest Time What a wonderful celebration we just had marking twenty years of the Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus Community. Thanks to Nancy Kissell and all who participated in the program. It was very interesting to hear from JB and Ann Mankin some of the history of the origins and founding of the community. The tireless and selfless dedication of a few dozen people over the first few years were what got us off the ground. I couldn t help but reflect on my own walk fifteen years ago and what I took away from that weekend. The biggest realization that I had was that I didn t have God first in my life. I had always thought that the first commandment to not have any other gods before God meant that as long as I didn t have a golden calf, a Buddha statue, a troll doll or some other figurine that I looked to for guidance, I was keeping that law. To think that whatever I thought about most, spent my time or money on was my idol was a new revelation for me. I realized that I had been intellectualizing God and had kept him as a subject for study rather than as a being to be in relationship with. This forced me to reorder my priorities. I made a commitment from that day forward to spend time in prayer, study and devotion to Him. Then a very interesting thing happened. I began to understand that the reason I was to put Him first above everything else was for MY benefit. I had viewed God as an All-Powerful ruling deity that commanded my attention for His good, for His asserting His position of authority over us. We were to be His subjects and submit to His rule. Somehow, it seemed, that He needed us to worship Him. How wrong that notion has turned out to be. We need Him in our lives more than He needs us. Through a close relationship with our Father, we receive the Fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, humility and self-control. These are given to us effortlessly as a result of a close relationship with Him. I thought that I had to work at these to develop the Fruit of the Spirit. I thought that if I only endured patiently, I would become patient. If I practiced kindness, I would become kind. If I just kept denying myself, I would obtain self-control. These are all works of the flesh. The quality of fruit they produce is unsatisfying and flavorless. However, there is a more excellent Fruit that comes when we spend time with God, read His word and meditate on it asking Him to reveal Himself through it and to help us apply it to our lives. If we follow this path, then the Fruit of the Spirit seems to just fall in our laps. It really is true that if we seek God with all of our hearts, all of our minds and all of our strength that then all these things will be added to us. Spend time with Him and reap the abundant harvest He provides. DeColores Steve Larabee Community Lay Director

News From the Kitchen Walt and Taffy King Well, the Spring Walks are history and we re getting ready for the September Walk. We want to thank everyone who came out during the spring and served a meal, washed dishes, worked in the kitchen or helped get things setup for the next meal. If you haven t been able to serve, or it has been awhile, we just want to encourage you to come on in and spend a little time serving the pilgrims. We need as many volunteers as possible for as many meals as possible. Especially on Friday and Sunday Mornings. Remember how it was when you went through the Walk? Things didn t happen automatically. Remember that coffee at 6:00 a.m. in the hallway, (when you really, really needed it.). You probably didn t notice it but did you know every table is positioned and set to exact requirements..every fork, knife, spoon, cup, saucer, etc. positioned properly. How did you feel when you walked in on Saturday night for dinner and the candles were there? All this and much, much, more is done by volunteers. Yet, you only see a small portion of them. In almost all cases, they serve behind the scenes because they want to serve and want the pilgrims to have the same experience you had. They may never be seen, but they re there sometimes 150 to 200 of them during the whole walk. The Kitchen/Dining function depends primarily on volunteers like you. If washing dishes is your thing..(now, that s a major area) We re always looking for volunteers. Both the Kitchen and Dining folks depend on this area to get things clean and back to them as soon as possible. If they have to wait, then meals are delayed and tables can t be setup. There s a lot to do even between meals so anyone who can spend a little time in this area will help greatly. Thanks again for making the Spring Walks successful. Hope to see you next month. De Colores, Walt &Taffy Remember Your walk? Think about all the people it took to make a walk happen. It takes many hands, the the work is easier with the more hands to help. Come join the fun and offer your hands in service to God. NEEDED: The Men s Walk is in danger of being canceled. Please prayerfully consider sponsoring a man on the upcoming walk. WANTED Reporters and anyone inerested in taking on doing the newsletter online startng in January. Training available immediately.

Great Smoky Mountain Emmaus, Chrysalis and Journey Community January 10, 2012 Community Lay Director The Character of a Community Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations. Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4 James was encouraging the tribes of the Dispersion in his address to them. They faced troubling times and hardships then, and we can take encouragement from his words in the troubling times that we face now as individuals, as a community and as a nation. It s no secret that we face difficult financial times, some of us more acutely than others, and there seems to be a general malaise or uncertainty about the future. This type of cultural depression creates fear and causes us to shrink back and seek cover or protection in our own ways. I say that is the natural response of the human flesh. But we were not given a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 I don t know all the reasons why we have had difficulty not just filling a men s walk, but even just getting a couple dozen men signed up for a walk. We have had

trouble for a long time. Recently, that difficulty seems to have been more severe. Are we expecting others to do the sponsoring? Do we not know how to sponsor? Are we just lazy? Are we afraid to approach both husband and wife to offer the gift of the Walk to Emmaus? I am still saddened and shocked as many of you have been that Walk #87 was canceled, but how we respond to this setback will show our true character as a community. Nine out of ten of those signed up for the fall are eager to attend the spring walk, and I m still waiting to hear from the tenth that he will be attending also. Let us respond as James would encourage us to do. Consider it wholly joyful when our faith is tested and we encounter trials. Surely every one of us can think of at least three or four men, women or couples who we would love to send on the Walk to Emmaus. What are we waiting for? Cultivate those friendships, pray for an opportunity to invite and then seize that opportunity when it arises. James talked about the need for action. Let s put our faith into action. De Colores, Steve Larrabee Out-going Community Lay Director

Kindling Several months ago the Upper Room amended the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. It seemed such a small change just a couple of pronouns but what a difference it can be. Where we used to ask the Holy Spirit to fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love, we now acknowledge that WE are the ones in need of His fire. And so we pray, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love. As I read Steve Larrabee s article I was reminded of how much we as a Community need a re-kindling. Sponsorship has been slow; Walk leaders have struggled to assemble teams; behind-the-scenes participation has been limited; and giving has been down. That s the bad news. Here s the good news the next line of the prayer: Send forth your Spirit and we shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. When God sends out his Spirit, there is renewal! Will you join me in praying for renewal for our Community this year that the fire His love would burn brighter in our prayer, our study and our actions? De Colores, Nancy Kissell, Incoming Community Lay Director News from the Board: The Board recently voted to maintain the current Pilgrim, Sponsor and Team fees. This decision was made despite the fact that our expenses were far greater than our income last year. We have some savings, so we have sufficient funds to cover those expenses, but something needs to be done as we look forward to The easy solution would be to raise fees for everyone, but the Board was reluctant to do that because we know that many are facing financial challenges. We are trusting God to provide through the gifts of Community members who are able to give. Please consider making a donation to GSMEC either at a Gathering or by sending a check to PO Box 53194, Knoxville, TN

Sponsoring a Pilgrim In order to sponsor someone on Walk to Emmaus, a person must first have been on The Walk itself. A sponsor should also be active in Fourth Day. Having been through the experience and being engaged in ongoing spiritual formation through Fourth Day gives one perspective on how to sponsor. Forth Day is a symbol of the days of Christian pilgrimage that follow the three-day Emmaus experience. The Walk to Emmaus is a unique opportunity to reflect on one's faith journey and make a deeper commitment to Christ. In fact, "the whole reason for The Walk to Emmaus is to make you a more faithful disciple and active member in your church." (Bob Wood, Day Four) Thus, the Fourth Day is central to the Emmaus experience, as it extends each individual's experience beyond the weekend and into life in the world. Beyond these requirements, the basic attitude of a sponsor is one of prayerful discernment. This results in intentional acts of unconditional love, or what is often termed "the first act of agape." A resource for further help is the Emmaus Library Series booklet, Sponsorship, by Richard and Janine Gilmore. The following is an excerpt from Sponsorship: "Sponsorship can be unwise or wise. Unwise sponsorship results from unbridled enthusiasm that wants everyone to have the same experience. Sponsors with unbridled enthusiasm approach anybody and everybody with the admonition that "you need to go on The Walk," and that open invitation is the primary (sometimes the only) emphasis. This approach lacks discernment and will result in a burden for the church. Such efforts in sponsorship frequently result in religious fringe groups within the church or possibly a parachurch of "Emmausites." While the individual being sponsored may benefit, that individual does not go back into the church to foster growth and renewal. The lack of commitment at this point is contrary to the purpose of Emmaus. Wise sponsorship is careful, intentional, prayerful, and purposeful because it results from God's leading. The pilgrims return to their churches and community renewed in their commitment to be effective disciples."

These are some thoughts from the Upper Room website. When we consider sponsorship, let us do so prayerfully first, and remember the purpose of the Emmaus movement: The object of the Community (GSMEC) shall be to inspire, challenge and equip church members for Christian action, in their homes, churches, places of work, and the world community through the Emmaus experience. DeColores Mary & Gary Humphrey

AGAPE Do you know the meaning of agape? It means love. If you: love going to bed late love going to bed tired love getting up early love waiting on people But most of all if you love God and want to serve Him then you need to be on one of the agape teams in This is one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences you can have in your Christian life. Call now, before all the slots are filled and you have to wait another year before you can volunteer. In all seriousness, it does amaze me after every walk how excited the agape team is after serving and how fulfilled they are. Please call either Tommy or Kathy DeColores, Tommy and Kathy Enos

The Purpose of Prayer Christians are called to a lifestyle of prayer, but many have come to see prayer as nothing more than calling upon their Heavenly Butler for daily service, or crying out to their Heavenly Lifeguard when they are drowning in their daily circumstances. Certainly God has more for us than that. Jesus said that because He was going to the Father, we would do even greater works than He did (see John 14:12). When He spoke those words, He was not talking to a crowd of world-renowned Christian evangelists. No, He was speaking to every person who names Jesus as Lord and Savior. He was speaking to you and me. Prayer is the responsibility of every Christian. God's Word tells us to pray. But we don't pray just because we have to; we pray because talking to God is a privilege. Prayer is entering into relationship with God so we can determine His will in the matter and call His will into existence on earth. ~~~~ from Becoming a Prayer Warrior by Elizabeth Alves Greetings! More to come on prayer in this year's GSMEC newsletter. Please remember to sign up for the 72 hour prayer vigils for Chrysalis Flights and Emmaus Walks.Sign-up sheets will be available at the gatherings and at the walks. Signing up on the website is real simple -- just click on links. Without prayer none of this could happen! Remember the "three legs" of the stool -- Study, Christian Action, and Piety. Can't have one without the others! Blessings and DeColores, Marianne Rucker
