1 Father O'Neill Council Volume 1, Number 1 Nov/Dec 2014 A Word from our Grand Night... Worthy Brother Knights, This is my first opportunity as Grand Night to be able to reach out to each of you via the 4011 News. I want to thank Brother Dick Bradford and his wife Sue for taking over the publishing duties. Our Columbian year is off to a great start! Already this year, we have had a successful Crab Feast, strong car raffle ticket sales and we have welcomed 6 new Brother Knights to our Council. Our Investment Club tickets have been sent out. The early results look promising, our Tootsie Roll Campaign is also about to kick off. We had a great turnout for the JMJ 5k with over 500 participants with 40 Brother Knights helping with the race operations. As a result of the unfortunate "NFL spousal abuse controversy this years race received more publicity than in previous years. Thanks to PGK Glenn Thuman and Brother Dan Yardley for all of your efforts in organizing the race. Thanksgiving, a day that is meant to be with family, eat too much, enjoy football and reflect on all that you have to be thankful for is only a few weeks away. Unfortunately, this holiday has become just another shopping day for many - with more and more stores opening their doors and opening them earlier. I encourage my fellow Knights and their families to maintain the spirit of the Holiday by spending the day with your families. This will also allow the employees at these stores the opportunity to do the same. Don't be a stranger! If you haven't been to a meeting or a KOC event recently, we would love to see you! Our Father O'Neill Council offers something for everyone with numerous activities, great events, and fellowship. Drop by one of our social meetings to find out what is new and catch up with old friends. I wish each of you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving and a Joyful and Blessed Christmas! î Greg Burke MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOVEMBER 5th Business Meeting 10th POW/MIA SolemnVigil 11th O'Neill Club Mtg. 12th Officers Meeting 13th K Club Meeting 16th Memorial Mass 19th 2nd Degree, Patapsco Council, Catonsville - 7:30pm 20th KC Bridge Club * Social lmeeting 25th Darts Night 27th Thanksgiving DECEMBER 3rd Business Meeting 6th Breakfast w Santa 9th O'Neill Club Mtg. 10th Officers Meeting 11th K Club Meeting 13th Franciscan Center Volunteer Day 16th Dart Night 17th Council Christmas Party 18th KC Bridge Club 21st Children Christmas Party * 3rd Degree at Holy Trinity Council, Severna Park - 7:30pm 22nd Retirement Home - Santa Visits 25th Christmas Day Hall Rental: Drew Hilbinger Seminary Avenue Lutherville, MD MISSION STATEMENT Living Our Faith The Father O'Neill Council of the Knights of Columbus is a Fraternal Organization of Catholic Men dedicated to the Church. We will expend our energies toward preserving the sanctity of life and community via service and charity. In pursuit of these objectives we promote family, develop friendships, enjoy fraternalism and grow in faith. Ä
2 Remembering our Council Veterans... OUR LADY OF VICTORY ASSEMBLY #3389 The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus is the Patriotic Degree of our Order. Our Assembly wants to honor, remember and reflect on every deceased veteran who had ever been a member either Father O Neill Council or St. Joseph Council. We plan to celebrate a Mass at our Council home next Memorial Day for these veterans who protected the freedoms we enjoy today. We need the cooperation of everyone receiving this message to compile a complete list of our deceased veterans of our councils. We ask you to send, phone or the names of each deceased veteran to Bill Santo. The names you submit can be a member of your family, friends or acquaintances as long as they had been a member of either council mentioned above. In addition to each name we would like to know the following if possible: Branch of Service; When served; Rank and Honors received. The success of this endeavor depends on the information we receive from you.î Bill Santo PGK, PFN 1404 Newport Place Lutherville, MD Memorial Mass On Sunday, November 16th Monsignor John Fitzgerald will celebrate the Annual Memorial Mass at 2pm at Delaney Memorial Gardens in the Chapel in the Mausoleum. We hope that you and your family will make every effort to join us on the 16th as, together, we honor our fallen Brother Knights. Ä Our Officers... The K club Annual Bingo was a great success again this year. Thank you to everyone who donated, served or played Bingo last month. On Thursday, Nov. 13th our guest speaker will present a talk on "Stress-Risky Business." As if the stresses of every day life were not enough, we often overburden ourselves preparing for the Holidays, causing even more stress in our lives. We can all benefit from this subject. Be sure to join us on Thursday, December 13th for our Potluck Christmas Dinner. What a great opportunity to share your favorite recipe, taste test many new dishes (maybe you'll even get the recipe), meet new aquantiences and catch up with old friends -as together we celebrate this Joyous Season. For more information on our meetings and coming events you can find us on Facebook or me at shribaby03@gmail.com. I hope you will consider joining us at our next meeting.î Looking forward to seeing you, Sheri Mooney
3 Good of the Order by John Easton, Lecturer It was my mother s funeral. My mother was kind and supportive; she was always there when I needed her. And, I knew that she prayed for me for my entire life. When she got seriously ill, my older sister had a new baby and my younger brother was recently married. I had no entanglements. Thus, I was the one who could fully devote the time to taking care of mother. It was an honor. Now, she is gone. At her funeral I found myself completely lost. What will I do now, Lord. I felt emptiness inside. Then, I looked at my brother. He sat stoically while clutching his wife s hand. My sister sat by her husband and cradled their baby. He held his arms around her. I sat alone, so deeply grieving that nobody noticed. My mother was my closest friend. We read the Bible together. I prepared meals, helped with her visits to doctors and took her for a walk. Now, my job is done and I was alone. Suddenly I heard a door to the church open, then quick footsteps hurried along the floor. In a moment I saw a young man, his eyes were filled with tears. He sat next to me. Then he sniffled: I m late and added: Why do they call Mary by the name Margaret? I whispered, Because her name was Margaret; nobody called her Mary. I wondered, why this stranger sat next to me and interrupted my grieving with his tears and fidgeting. Her name is Mary Peters he insisted. No, that isn t right, I replied. Then a sudden thought stroked his mind. Is this the Lutheran church? No, it is across the street. It was clear, that the man was at the wrong funeral. This awkward situation and solemnity of the funeral bubbled up inside me; I began to laugh. Some mourners threw sharp looks at me. I looked at the man sitting next to me; he started laughing too. I imagined my mother watching us and laughing together. After the final Amen, we went together to the parking lot. Perhaps we will be the talk of the town, he smiled and then offered, Since I have missed my aunt s funeral, maybe we could have a cup of coffee. I agreed. A year afterward, we were married at a small country church. This time we both arrived at the right place. God gave me laughter and love in my time of sorrow. Now we are celebrating our twenty-second wedding anniversary. When somebody asks how we met, my husband answers: Her mother and my aunt introduced us to each other. Thus, our match was certainly made in heaven. Ä The Father O'Neill Council welcomes four new Brother Knights. 4 Fr. O'Neill Charities... Keep Christ in Christmas... Whether it be a Birthday, Anniversary or Christmas, I am always looking for that perfect gift to honor those special people in my life that I care about. In response to God's call in the Gospel, I can't think of a better way to honor them than by making a donation in their name to the Fr. O'Neill Charities. Brother Knights, as the Holidays are quickly approaching let us not forget those less fortunate. Together, we can make a difference. Make your tax deductible donation today to "Fr. O'Neill Charities"Ä Christmas Blessings to each of you, Dick Bradford rgbradford@icloud.com If you don't have your Christmas Cards, Note Cards or Keepsake Ornaments for this Christmas consider contacting Brother Knight Dick Vandenberg. Dick is selling a beautiful assortment of cards and Ornaments to benefit the Assembly. Since we all need Christmas Cards, what a wonderful way to respond to God's word by supporting the Assembly Charities as distributing food to those in need, helping families with emergency housing medical bills, youth programs, programs for people with disabilities, scholarships student loans and more.ä Contact Dick today at or rvande@comcast.net.
