1 volume 34 number 6 fremonitor A publication of Fremont Community Church (home of Christian Community Schools) June 2007 Memorial Day by Kevin Hom, Associate Pastor Selah (pronounced sea-la) is an ancient word found throughout the Psalms believed to be a musical instruction to pause; to reflect; and to measure the worth of. On June 22nd, you are invited to take some time out of your busy schedules: to pause, reflect, and join with us as we celebrate through music and the arts all that God has done for us. It's a FREE event that you won't want to miss! Free Child Care available upon registration: jwatts@gofcc.org. For more information, contact Janell Watts at , ext. 502 or jwatts@gofcc.org. Camp Eggers is a US Army base in the heart of the city. Yes, it was strange walking towards the security Pastor Kevin & Pauline checkpoint with a.50 caliber machine gun trained on you Hom by a young man in a sand bag bunker. Heading to the worship center (basically a large aluminum and canvas tent) we had to be escorted by a man wielding an M-16. Things became even stranger when we reached our destination and all of the worshippers are in camouflage with either a weapon near them or wearing a side arm. When we stood up to sing, I had to be careful not to kick the rifle with grenade launcher which was under the seat in front of me the last thing I wanted to do was get anyone too excited! During the service they took prayer requests from the congregation. This was a rare glimpse into the hearts and minds of these soldiers who are placed in harm s way. What weighs heaviest on their hearts? A sister who just had a c-section back in the US. A co-worker who suffered a heart attack. A family member whose marriage is breaking up. The people of Afghanistan -- that they might have peace. After the service we were escorted out by a Chaplain s Assistant his name was Kevin (we shared a hug over that one) and his home base is in Monterey. He told me that he got to chat with his family that day via the Internet. His two little kids had made Easter eggs and wrote messages to him on them. One said, I love you, Daddy. The other said, Daddy, save the world. All Kevin could do was cry like a little baby in front of thirty other soldiers waiting to use the computer. There are two chaplains at Camp Eggers. Both of them volunteered for the post and committed to one-year terms. Chaplain James Fisher (Captain) described their VCR (yes, everything is an acronym, this one stands for Volunteer Community Relief ) program where US servicemen volunteer their time to bring goods and supplies to the needy in the community. They give away everything from toys to school supplies to clothing. If you d like to contact him about this, james.r.fisher@afghan.swa.army.mil. This Memorial Day is an opportunity for us to remember. Let us never forget those who served in the past and those who serve this day. Blessings, 1

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was taking the Christmas lights in the quad down. But here we are, and in just a few short weeks school will be out and the student ministries summer program will be in full swing. Once again we have an amazing summer planned for your students... Hume Lake Christian Camps, pool parties, beach trips, weekend camp-outs, BBQ s, Raging Waters, and lots, lots more (random Snapple fact #332: In the U.S., there are about 15,000 vacuum cleaner-related accidents each year). One VERY exciting thing to tell you is that we are taking our largest group in the history of FCC to Hume Lake this year. We are so pumped that we were able to get extra spots. It is always exciting to see the decisions that are made and the things God does while at summer camp. We are also very excited to welcome a few new faces to our volunteer staff. This year, Will Walker, Nathan White, Lisa Petersen, David Fong, Keri Soto, Evan Urton, Erica Bolivar and Shayla Cross all started working with the Junior High and High School groups. They have been a HUGE blessing to the groups and we are all looking forward to how God will continue to use them this summer. Please keep them and the rest of our staff in your prayers this summer! (Laffy Taffy joke # 52: What is the definition of a farmer? Someone who is outstanding in his field.) In addition to everything else going on this summer, the students have come together and decided on a missions project for the year. While I was in Afghanistan with David Kayumy, one of our High School students and a few of the volunteer staff, we came upon a school for girls that was unable to be used because it was not finished. After hearing the story, the students decided they would raise the money to build the wall that is needed around the school. It is very exciting for me to see the hearts of our students as they reach out to a community half a world away with the love of Jesus. There is lots more to tell you about, but not any more room. So for more info on our calendar of events, visit our website or give us a call or stop us in the hallways to chat (especially if you want more random Snapple facts or Laffy Taffy jokes). Hope your summer is at least half as great as ours~ M@ 2

5 What is Selah? by Tony Bolivar, Music Minister That s easy. Selah is a small town in Washington state, population 6,400. See, it s not that complicated. Actually, this is one word from the Old Testament which has had scholars and normal people like me scratching our heads for centuries trying to figure out. Rather than confusing you with a bunch of big words, I ll just tell you what Selah means to me: Wait a second. Think about that. Worship The Holy One. Wow. Wow, again! Praise God! Now let s insert my commentary into Psalm 3: 1 O LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! 2 Many are saying of me, God will not deliver him. Selah Wait a second. Think about that. Worship The Holy One. Wow. Wow, again! Praise God! 3 But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. 4 To the LORD I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. Wait a second. Think about that. Worship The Holy One. Wow. Wow, again! Praise God! It makes perfect sense to me. It means a chance to - Wait a second. Think about that. Worship The Holy One. Wow! Wow, again! And Praise God with my family here at FCC, and anybody else that wants to partake. I d like to personally invite you to join the choir and band the Summer Selah here on June 22, 2007, as we take a break from the worries of the world and focus on the wonders of our Creator. IS GOD CALLING YOU TO HELP??? VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JULY Y 30-AUGUS AUGUST T 3, AM-1-12:30 2:30PM PM Come join our kids as they trek north to the Arctic Edge for VBS 2007, where daily excursions from Big Bear Lodge will have kids hiking across the tundra, exploring the seascape by kayak, and skimming the backcountry in a float plane. Be a guide to these great trailblazers, help lead music, have fun in the backcountry leading recreational games, serving up some tasty snacks, or ham it up on stage... there s something just for you in VBS!
