WHAT HAPPENS WHEN STUDENTS PRAY? About 15 months ago, a few of our students came to me and asked for some advice. We had been talking in our High School group about how God has made each of us for a specific purpose and part of our walk with Christ is figuring out what God is calling us to do to further His Kingdom. They felt like they were being called to do something for the other youth in the city, but weren t quite sure how to go about making it happen. After spending some time talking about what they wanted to do and making the initial plans for the first city-wide youth event, the outreach details were in place. These students organized a group of other student leaders Matt & Beth Bromley from all over Fremont and after a few months of planning, were able to bring together about 350 students last June. The event was such a success that the leadership team immediately decided to do another event sometime the following year. CA Well, as soon as the school year started, the leadership team began to meet again. They spent time talking about what they wanted it to look like, who they would like to speak, which bands they wanted to play but mostly, they prayed! They prayed that God would show them how to reach the youth of this city. They prayed that God would use this event to start a revival in the hearts of our youth. They prayed that the Christian students would be bold enough to use this event to reach out to their un-churched friends. For the next seven months, these students met together regularly to plan and pray. And last month, The Answer 08 was held here at Fremont Community Church. Over 600 students showed up that night for a free BBQ, concert, worship and to hear a speaker. After the speaker was finished, he asked for students to come forward if they wanted to make a decision to follow Jesus and 9 students stood to accept Christ as their savior for the first time, and hundreds stood around them re-dedicating their lives to the service of their master. What a powerful evening! So, what happens when students pray??? GOD MOVES IN AMAZING WAYS!!! Be encouraged with what God is doing in and through the students of FCC. Our city will never be the same because of them. Please be praying for them and with them as they continue to ask what God has called them to be and as they figure out what they should be doing to live out that calling. Matt Bromley, Youth Pastor 01
2 MINISTRYHIGHLIGHTS FCC SUPPORTS A NEW MISSIONARY IN SPAIN // By Glenn Rose, Elder The Missions Ministry Team (MMT) announced that FCC will be providing partial support for a missionary family in Spain for the next two years. The Taban family is originally from Romania and moved to Spain in 2003, along with many other Romanians who are seeking job opportunities in Spain. Teo Taban is a dedicated Christian worker who has gone to seminary in Romania. He is originally from Medias, Romania (a small city about 25 miles north of Sibiu where our sister Church, Betania (Bethany) Christian Church is located), under the leadership of Pastor Benjamin Poplacean. The Romanian Evangelical Churches are helping to launch an ambitious campaign to plant new churches in eastern Spain to make believers of the many thousands of Romanians who have immigrated to Spain during the last 5 years. Teo and his family have entered full time ministry in Spain to plant churches for Romanian immigrants and develop large Christian youth conferences for Romanian immigrant youths. They have been partially supported by European Christian Missions (ECM) from Canada this past year. FCC is now joining as a partner supporting Teo to further develop his ministry in Spain. Up to this time, Teo has been working full time in ministry every day. He has also been a tentmaker (like the apostle Paul) delivering meat, starting at 3am, in order to take care of his family. Teo is 29 years old. He and his wife, Pricilia, have two young boys, Jonathan who is 4 years old, and Lucas who will be 2 years old this year. They live in Castellon, Spain. This is a town on the Mediterranean with 150,000 people and 40,000 of them are newly arrived from Romania. The town is now 25% Romanian. So far, Teo and his team have planted 5 new evangelical Churches in the past two years, and conducted 4 large Christian youth conferences with hundreds of young people in attendance since 20. I have personally seen the fruits of their labor as they prepared for a youth conference near Penescola, Spain several years ago, and also attended a newly planted Church in Castellon, Spain. Teo presently springboards his ministry from his home Church in Castel- To Help You Plan Ahead MAY -03 MAY MAY 17 May 17 MAY 18 MAY 26 MAY 26 Encounter Christian Community Schools Spring Musicals Student Ministries Activity: JH Boomers! One of the recently planted Churches is now up to over 75 people each Sunday. According to Teo, there is a tremendous thirst for the Gospel, because many immigrant Romanians feel displaced from their home country. There are not many Orthodox Romanian Churches in Spain. This creates a need for Evangelical Churches to fill the void. In addition, our new missionary has developed a ministry to older Spanish folks who are in retirement facilities. Teo and his family are fluent in Spanish, English and (naturally) Romanian. Please pray for this family. FCC will be sending a short term missionary team to work with Teo within the next year in Spain. If you want to know more, call Pastor Kevin or Glenn Rose at the church offices. 5 LORD TEACH US TO PRAY By Henry Abuda, Young Adult/Young Families Pastor I just don t have the time. I m too busy. I m too tired. I just don t have the energy. Ever felt like that? Wish you knew what to do? In another time and in another place, twelve tired men wrestled with those same frustrations. They were trying desperately to keep up with Jesus as He rolled through the daily bombardment of needy people and challenging situations. Jesus seamlessly flowed through each encounter with astounding grace, poise, and power. What was His secret? Where did He get His inner strength and wisdom? The answer is simple: Jesus had an exceptional prayer life. The disciples saw that Jesus authority, compassion, and power flowed from His prayer life; when they could ask Him anything they wanted, they made this request, Lord, teach us to pray (Lk. 11:1). They did not ask Jesus to teach them to preach, pastor, sing, serve, do miracles, or even testify; they said, Teach us to pray. Notice the disciples request, Teach us to pray and not Teach us how to pray. This request is remarkable because it was answered, then it changed their life; and now we can pray the same request. God delights in answering this request. In fact, prayers are so precious to Him that He collects them as beautiful bowls of incense perfuming His throne (Rev. 5:8). Moreover, He wants to teach us to pray because it is a way to converse with Him, and He loves to spend time with us. Prayer touches His heart and (therefore) is the key to everything else. Everything we need is at the disposal of prayer. Recently, our Alive Fellowship (Young singles/family) did a prayer walk throughout the Fremont Community Church campus. Before we embarked on this prayer walk, we prepared ourselves by praying a simple prayer: the Lord s Prayer (Lk. 11:2-4). It is simple, eloquent, and robust. We realized that the most personal and powerful experiences of prayer are when we are on our knees, in our prayer closets, at the throne of God, or in this case on the hallways outside classrooms and offices. My prayer is that America will ask God, Teach us to pray in order that prayer will become her strength and shield. Once we begin praying, we can experience the riches of prayer; and make no mistake, there are untold treasures awaiting us in the place of prayer: success, blessing, direction, dreams, forgiveness, wisdom, deliverance, healing, faith, freedom, miracles, and yes... strength and protection (shield)! AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY CHOIR CONCERT Sunday, May 18 9am & 11am For more information, contact Joy Medina at ext. 503 or jmedina@gofcc.org With this in mind, the 57th Annual National Day of Prayer will take place on May 1, The theme for this year is Prayer! America s Strength and Shield based on Psalms 28:7, The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped. AZUSA PACIFIC CHOIR HOSTING The Azusa Pacific Choir and Orchestra will be ministering to us during our Worship Services on May 18, 2008!
