1 Aug 2013 WELCOME Biographical Information for Michael Hickok Michael Hickok has been a Pastor in the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church since From July 1, 2008, until his appointment here at Cary UMC he has served as Pastor at Grace UMC in Joliet. He previously led congregations in Schaumburg, Naperville and Hinsdale. While serving as Pastor in Hinsdale, that congregation undertook a capital campaign that raised $4.3 million to build a new sanctuary and renovate the rest of the building. Under Mike s leadership, Grace UMC in Joliet also completed a capital campaign with the money used to install a new heating system, remodel the day care kitchen and replace the sanctuary flooring, seating, lighting and audio/visual systems. Mike earned degrees at West Virginia University, Northern Theological Seminary and completed additional studies in United Methodist history, polity and doctrine at Garrett- Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. He is currently enrolled in a Doctor of Ministry program in preaching at Garrett-Evangelical. Mike is passionate about outreach and has led youth mission trips to Colorado (twice), Texas (twice), Minnesota (twice), Tennessee (twice), Indiana, and Kentucky. He was also able to lead adult groups from Grace UMC in Naperville to Russia on four occasions. Mike and his wife Linda have been married thirty-four years. Linda is an attorney who works for BCS Insurance in Oak Brook as their Vice President of Compliance. They have a son, Joe, who is married to Melissa with one child, A.J., and a daughter Lisa who is a Ph.D. candidate in Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mike was a member of the Hinsdale Rotary Club and chaired the committee that organized their annual fundraiser in He has also been active in the Joliet Rotary and chaired the Invocation Committee. Additionally, Mike has served on the Board of Directors of the Will/ Grundy Clinic, a free medical clinic for residents of Will and Grundy counties. Mike loves being a local church pastor and believes God is calling him to preach, lead worship, teach, and inspire persons to lives of greater discipleship. Mike and Linda feel blessed to be coming to Cary UMC and look forward to building relationships with the entire church family here. 1

The customer had recently thrown away a dusty old Bible he d found in the attic of an old house he d bought. Someone named Guten-something-orother had printed it, he mentioned offhandedly. Not Gutenberg? the shop owner gasped. Yes, that was it, the man replied. You threw away one of the first books ever printed! the owner exclaimed in dismay. A copy recently sold at auction for half a million dollars! Oh, I don t think this Bible would ve been worth anything like that, the man replied. It was scribbled all over in the margins by some guy named Martin Luther. While taking photos of the earth, the space shuttle Columbia made a surprising discovery: Underneath the harsh Sahara Desert were 26 lakes, as well as miles of underground rivers. That region s inhabitants face tough conditions because those abundant resources haven t yet been tapped. Churches often suffer a similar problem. Congregations can t reach their full God-given potential unless people discover and use their gifts. When we tap into our talents, God promises that we will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11, Office Hours: Mon. 3 Biographical Information for Daniel Lee A bit about me I was born on November 28, 1982 in Seoul, South Korea. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 8 years old. After a few years in California, my family decided to settle in Chicago near our relatives. Ever since then, the Korean United Methodist churches in the Chicago land area have helped my family adjust to life in the U.S. My parents currently own and operate a cleaners business in Hainsville, Illinois. They are also prominent lay leaders in Vision Church, United Methodist in Mundelein, Illinois. Along with my parents, I have an older sister who is also in the ordination process in the UMC. She is currently the new English pastor of Korean UMC of South Suburban Chicago. She is beginning her 4 th year as a local pastor. In 2006, I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a minor in German. It was during my years at UIC that I felt called to ordained ministry. After college, in order to save money for seminary, I worked full time as a Production Manager of a construction company for about 3 years. I enrolled in the Masters in Divinity program at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in 2008 and graduated in My continuing education right now is on leadership and administrative management. I am currently enrolled in a program called MDiv Plus with Garrett and Kellogg School of Management. I hope to uses this training to help others maximize their gifts for the Kingdom of God. For the last 4 years, I have been serving as the Youth Director of Vision Church, United Methodist. At Vision, the youth group has their own service every week, so I have had the privilege of preaching and leading worship every Sunday. For the last five years, I have also been serving as the co-director of an organization called Korean American Youth Ministries. This is an organization funded by the United Methodist Church that organizes youth retreats for Korean UM churches. In my free time, I enjoy being with my family and friends. I also love playing basketball, listen to music, playing video games, playing around with instruments like the guitar and piano, and cooking. Another thing you (especially youth) should know about me is that I like to play pranks so much so that one of my nicknames is April Fools. I won t dish it out if I can t take it! I am so thankful already to the wonderful people at Cary UMC for making me feel so welcome even in the last couple of weeks. I am excited to see what God has to teach us as we serve together! 3
