1 Announcements July 11 & 12, 2009 When Amos told what he saw when God held up the plumb line of justice next to Israel that the poor were being trampled he was a threat to the power of priests and king. John the Baptist also spoke truth to power, and Herod had him beheaded. In Herod's fear that Jesus is John returned from the dead, we may hear hope for the oppressed: that all the prophets killed through the ages are alive in Jesus. We are called to witness to justice in company with them. Today we commemorate Nathan Söderblom, Bishop of Uppsala, who died in died A winner of the Nobel Prize for peace for his efforts to unite peoples after the First World War, Söderblom also called attention to the revival of early church worship principles, and helped to lay the groundwork for the World Council of Churches. It should make for a winning combination for everybody. Hope to see you! EGYPT VOLUNTEERS: Trinity has begun to explore possible interactions with our missionaries in Egypt. Since our Missionary in Kenya came home we have funded a group in Egypt that is doing Lutheran ministry among refugees there. If you would be interested in joining the group that is exploring possibilities please talk with Pastor Mitchell or him at pm@trinityashland.org....upcoming EVENTS... ON JULY 22 AND AUGUST 3, Karen Kaufman, Assistant to the Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod (and a member of Trinity) will be presenting material in two identical sessions at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will be dealing with two documents concerning sexuality. I want our members to be fully informed concerning the details of those documents and possible implications for ministry at Trinity, Ashland. The two sessions are identical because I want all members to have at least one opportunity to have the documents and procedures explained. Hopefully, all who are interested will be able to make one of the two presentations. - Pastor Mitchell HONORING OUR SENIOR CITIZENS: Trinity would like to say thank you for loving and serving the Lord for many years. 5 REGISTER NOW FOR CHOIR CAMP For ages 4 (as of September 30) through grade 8 in the school year. This is our seventeenth-annual Choir Camp and this year s theme is God s People. Open to the community, the four days of fun and fellowship are set for Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30, from 9 to 12 noon. The four-day week will conclude with a presentation and a family picnic in Jack s Place on the last day. There is no registration fee this year. Instead we ask that participants bring in a few coins each day as an offering to support a new Lutheran mission church in North Ridgeville. 7 August Forums Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. A New Song Aug. 2, 9, 16 & 23 Choir Room Have you ever listened to singers on the radio and think "How do they sound like that?" If you are interested in some practical tips to begin on that journey toward sounding more current in your singing, this class may be of interest to you. Kim Wolbert will be leading a series of classes focused on teaching a variety of vocal genres in relation to Christian Contemporary Music, which will include learning songs as well as listening to a variety of voice types. This is a non-threatening approach to teaching personal vocal technique. Individuals will practice in a group setting. All levels of singers are welcome to participate. If the members of the class are interested we could participate in an upcoming worship service. Fanny Crosby: Queen of the Gospel Hymn & the Blind Poetess Aug. 9 Trinity Room Raylene Hlavaty will give a 30-minute presentation followed by a question and answer time in first person and in costume. Fanny Crosby was the author of many beloved hymns such as Blessed Assurance. Born in 1820, Fanny became blind at six weeks old. Rather than hinder, blindness gave her an ear for rhyme and an opportunity for education. She believed that God had ordained her blindness for His glory. By the time of her death, in 1915, she had written over 8,000 hymns many of which are still sung today. Come join us to learn about this amazing woman of faith. Tired of Yelling at Your Teenager? Aug. 9, 16 & 23 Community Room Erin Schaefer, of Ashland Parenting Plus, will be providing a series on Empowering Parents of Teens. Parents will have an opportunity to discuss and explore rules and consequences, handling disagreements, chores and responsibilities, letting go, family time together, and joint problem solving. The goal of the series is to empower teens and parents in the process, helping parents find ways to work with their teens versus fighting with them. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions but may choose to attend any sessions as they are able. This series is made possible by a grant through the Ashland County Department of Jobs and Family Services. 7

I know you re thinking, Sunday school in the summer, yeah right! But CHECK IT OUT, I bet you ll be surprised!!! This Monday, July 13 th The Ship (Movie Night w/ Alissa Kretzmann) Incoming 9 th 12 th Graders, we invite you to join us in the youth room from 7:00 9:00pm for our 3 rd and final session of this series. Feel free to invite friends and don t miss out.. Alissa has a great movie in store for you!! This Wednesday, July 15 th Middle School Girls Movie Night Incoming 7 th 9 th grade girls should join us in the youth room for root beer floats, popcorn, and a movie! We ll start at 6:30 and end at 9:00pm (this will give us plenty of time to relax in the air conditioning, watch the movie, and talk a bit.) Next Monday, July 20 th ELCA Youth Gathering Overnighter All youth attending the youth gathering should be at the church, with luggage in tow, at 7:00pm. We ll spend the evening getting all the final stuff in order for our trip and having some fun as we get ready to leave bright and early on Tuesday the 21 st. Next Tuesday, July 21 st Jesus Justice Jazz (ELCA Youth Gathering) - Our group of 24 departs at 8:00am for a week-long venture to New Orleans. We ll have breakfast together and a brief sending service led by Pastor Jeff beginning at 6:15am. We will return Monday, July 27 th. Please keep us in your prayers as we travel, serve, and grow in faith on this trip. 9
