1 10:45 Order of Worship February 18, 2018 (See separate bulletins for 6:30 & 8:30 and for Praise Worship) On Ash Wednesday the church began its journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. First Peter connects the way God saved Noah s family in the flood with the way God saves us through the water of baptism. The baptismal covenant is made with us individually, but the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the whole world. This bulletin contains information for one of the two 10:45 a.m. Sunday services, a festive setting in the sanctuary. Praise Worship is also being held in Jack s Place, our newer fellowship hall. A separate bulletin lists the 6:30 p.m. Saturday night folk service and the 8:30 a.m. traditional service We invite you to turn to pages 11 & 12 in this bulletin for helpful information for visitors and members alike, such as restrooms, child care and service participants. This Kyrie comes from the Slovak church hymnal of The cantor leads with a prayer to each Person of the Trinity, and the congregation responds with a hymn. 3

4 *PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated SERMON LENTEN JOURNEY Pastor Michael Koch HYMN OF THE DAY O Lord, throughout These Forty Days ELW 319 *LENTEN CONFESSION ON BAPTISM pg adapted from Luther s Small Catechism In today s Gospel we heard of Jesus actions after he was baptized by John in the Jordan River. What is baptism and what does this mean for us? Baptism is not simply plain water. Instead, it is water used according to God s command and connected with God s Word. What then is this word of God? Where our Lord Christ says in Matthew 28, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. What gifts or benefits does baptism grant? It brings about forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe it, as the words and promise of God declare. How can water do such great things? Clearly the water does not do it, but the word of God, which is with and alongside the water, and faith, which trusts this word of God in the water. 6

7 What then is the significance of such a baptism with water? It signifies that the old person in us with all sins and evil desires is to be drowned and die through daily sorrow for sin and through repentance, and on the other hand that daily a new person is to come forth and rise up to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. *PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION After each portion of the prayers: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You bid your people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast. Renew our zeal in faith and life, and bring us to the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God. And so, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 8

During the minister s prayer, the congregation responds with several phrases as listed below. as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again....grace our table with your presence. Come, Holy Spirit....burning with justice, peace, and love. Come, Holy Spirit....now and forever. Amen. *LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen *INVITATION TO COMMUNION Return to God with all your heart. Receive bread for the desert journey. Amen. COMMUNION All baptized Christians who believe that Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, is truly present in, with and under the forms of bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation are welcome to receive communion. Please sign a communion card, located in the pew rack and hand it to the usher who directs you. Most people on the main floor receive the elements while kneeling at the altar rail. Receive the host (bread), hear the promise, The body of Christ given for you and respond Amen. Then either drink from the first gold chalice of wine (common cup), while hearing the promise The blood of Christ shed for you, or touch the host (bread) into the second silver chalice of wine (intinction), while hearing the promise The blood of Christ shed for you. Return to your pew by the center aisle, and then you may sit or kneel for prayer. 9

10 Those in the balcony and the last two pews of the nave are directed to an intinction station in the narthex. Gluten-free hosts (wafers) are available at each station. non-alcoholic wine is available only in the narthex. Please indicate your desire to the communion deacon. Persons in the front who have difficulty with steps or kneeling are welcome to come to the narthex when their pew is invited forward. You return by the center aisle. If you are not physically able to move to the narthex, please advise an usher and the elements will be brought to you. Children who do not yet commune are invited with their families to receive a blessing.
