This was the slogan used in a campaign that talked about physical abuse within families. In our time, many people are pointing an accusing finger at their parents or brothers and sisters and saying; This is why I am in such pain today. It all goes back to the way I was treated as I was growing up. Unfortunately, all too often, this is true. Many people go through much of their lives trying to heal the wounds that were inflicted by the families in which they were raised. Actually in a backwards kind of way, our current consciousness of how much harm can be done in a family points up how important family really is. You see, the flip side of all of this is that families can hurt because there is so much power within families power for good or for evil. Many people look back on their families and are deeply thankful for their parents and their brothers and sisters because it is there that they first experienced deep love and security. It is there that they were able to make mistakes and be forgiven. It is there that they were valued as precious and lovable. Today is the feast of the Holy Family. A day when we are reminded that Joseph, Mary and Jesus lived many years under the same roof, sharing their daily uneventful lives with one another, taking meals together, talking and laughing, walking to their own place of worship, praising God, reaching out to help their neighbors in whatever way this poor family could. In our opening prayer, we asked God to help us to imitate this holy family in our own families. It specifically mentions that we are to be united in respect and love. The family is the creation of a loving God. The family is the school of love and respect because it is the family that children learn what it means to be human where they learn how they should relate to others. But who is the teacher and who are the students? In any normal family, the parents are going to be the main teachers and the children the students. But parents must also be students and be open to learning from each other, husband from wife and wife from husband, and also open to learning from their children. So the family is not just a school for the children, but for the parents as well. Wife and husband learn to love from the relationship they have with one another and with their children. Love one another takes on a special meaning when we think of it in the context of a family. Our illusions of how loving we are, quickly goes up in smoke when we are face to face with a rebellious child or an indifferent marriage partner. It is hard to deceive ourselves about how caring we think we are, when we see close up in our families how unkind or cruel we can be. On the other hand, it is so comforting when we are able, by the grace of God, to be kind to those close to us, to forgive our father or mother, or husband or wife, when we know they have been less than loving to us. So today we have been given the ideal. It s a beautiful ideal and one that I hope we can all work towards. When each family becomes stronger, so does our parish family and when our parish family becomes stronger, the whole Church is nourished and strengthened.

4 Holy Spirit Catholic Church December 31, 2017 FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT SATURDAY, JANUARY 13 Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Movie starts at 7 p.m. There are no Faith Formation classes this Sunday, December 31, Classes resume next year, Sunday, January 7, 2018! Catechists, don t forget our annual Epiphany Coffee Bar and voluntary Secret Santa Gift Exchange is scheduled for Sunday, January 7 from 8:30-11:15 a.m. in the dining room. The gift exchange is strictly voluntary; bring a $5.00 or less gift to exchange with your fellow catechists if you would like to participate. Just drop it off at the front desk and be sure to put your name on it! In a galaxy far, far away, a banquet was held in their honor! Catechists and aides, mark your calendars for Monday, January 22 from 7-9 p.m. for our Annual Appreciation Dinner! Wear your best Star Wars outfit, as the force will be strong with so many to celebrate! Childcare is first-come, first-serve and is LIMITED. Contact Sharon Bush at to arrange for childcare needs. Children in First Communion preparation will be Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday, January 10 at 7 p.m. followed by a reception in the Narthex. On Sunday, January 21, children in Grades Kindergarten through 3rd will be attending Mass as a class, as part of their lessons on the liturgy and sacraments. Additionally, Grades 4-6 will be attending a teaching Mass in the gym. Please mark your calendars NOW so as not to forget. It will be imperative that your children arrive to class on time (that s 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.) to attend Mass and ensure an orderly flow for seating. Children arriving after 9:25 a.m. or 11:25 a.m. will be sent with their parents to attend Mass as a family. We appreciate your cooperation very much! This trip to Mass has become a much anticipated part of our curriculum and enjoyed, we hope, by the children. Parents, you are also cordially invited to attend our teaching Mass in the gym.
