2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church May 20, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk Today we celebrate our 44 th anniversary as a parish. We celebrate the one who brings that Oneness to our Church the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost day, the Spirit was manifested to the Church in a remarkable way. The great gift that the Spirit gave and still gives to the Church was the gift of oneness. We see in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles that all of the Jews, who spoke many, many different languages, all heard the Apostles speaking to them in their own native tongue. Oneness was the first effect of the coming of the Holy Spirit. Whenever we allow the Holy Spirit to be present in our community, we can be assured that we will experience this precious oneness. However, we must be on guard against certain actions or attitudes that would endanger this gift. Let me mention three areas to look at because we in our own community here, must also work towards greater unity. Nothing destroys the unity of a parish more than gossip. When people start repeating stories to one another about this or that parishioner, or this or that member of the pastoral team, then nothing good will come of it. This is an evil action and will have evil consequences. Sometimes the gossip may not be about what another person has done, but about what another person is thinking. If a situation arises where someone has said something and we hear about it third hand, please presume that you have not heard the correct story, because you probably have not. Do not repeat to anyone else what you have heard if it is going to adversely affect the opinion anyone has of that other person. If it is something important and you must know what was said, go directly to that other person. Otherwise, you have no right to repeat anything that was hearsay. Many communities have been seriously damaged because some people thought they knew something about someone else, but were terribly misinformed. Secondly, one of the beautiful things about the Catholic Church is that on many issues there is room for a wide variety of opinions. Not everything is doctrine. We have a long history of dialogue and discussion in our universal Church. We must never forget that. This in fact is how we as Church grow. New ideas are presented, discussed, thought about, and refined. A constructive dialogue can have many positive effects for the health of our Church. What I am saying is that we have an obligation to try to understand one another to try to discover the truth of each other s positions, and to build on that truth. Lastly, we must grow to accept one another s gifts. The great thing about a community is that it is a community because the different members bring different gifts to the life of the whole community. Once again, the Catholic Church is the supreme example of how this benefits people. A quick glance at the history of our Church shows, time and time again, how individuals and groups with different gifts have brought so much richness to our Catholic faith and to the world. This also must apply in our own community. When a new gift arises here, we must be very slow before we do anything to squelch such a gift. If the gift is from the Spirit, it will become apparent. If it is not, it will also become apparent. We must give it the time it needs. When I celebrate liturgy with you, I see how multi-cultural we are and yet we are all Catholic, one in the Spirit! I am truly blessed to be your pastor!!
