1 August, 2016 (Reprinted from the July 7, 2016 Kalamazoo District Newsletter) Meet (Our New Kalamazoo) District Superintendent Dwayne Bagley Dwayne Bagley grew up in an obscure village in southwest Michigan. The backyard of the family home in Prairieville was a cornfield. After graduation from Delton Kellogg High School, Dwayne attended Western Michigan University where he majored in History, Wesley Foundation and part-time jobs. Seeds planted at his home church - Delton Faith UMC - began to take root during this time largely through experiences made possible by United Methodist Campus Ministry. It was also during this time of his life that Dwayne formed connection with his wife Shelly who he met at the Kalamazoo Wesley Foundation. A desire to explore a growing sense of God s calling in his life led Dwayne to United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Experiences at an inner city church, the Alzheimer s unit of a United Methodist retirement community and the Ann Arbor Wesley Foundation helped confirm his calling to ordained ministry. He graduated from seminary with an Mdiv degree, an appointment to Webberville UMC and a ten-day old baby boy named Liam. Dwayne and Shelly s family has grown during the almost twenty-five years they ve been together. The surprising and grace-filled arrival of their youngest daughter Olivia twelve years ago gave the happy couple a matched set of children - two boys and two girls. Their two oldest, Liam and Gwen, are off to college and continue to place their diametric opposition on display by attending Western Michigan and Central Michigan respectively. Their son Isaac is completing ninth grade and yearns for the day when school will not seem boring. Olivia will be entering eighth grade next year and divides her time between mastering the trombone and contemplating the intricacies of long division. Throughout his ministry, the appointive hourglass has repeatedly run out on Dwayne and his family after seven years. The last twenty-one years have been divided equally between United Methodist Congregations in Webberville, Albion and Mason. During these years Dwayne has also served as dean of the Lansing District Senior High Camp (5 years), Registrar for the West Michigan Conference Board of Ordained Ministry (9 years) and the Chair of the Lansing District Committee on Ministry (5 years). In his spare time Dwayne contemplates how many more stamps he needs to fill in the blanks in the World Traveler album his grandmother gave him when he was five. He likes doing things with his hands and is neither afraid of, nor proficient with, blunt or sharp tools. Immediate gratification for Dwayne is found in cooking, fixing and building things. Dwayne delights in listening to instrumental music of the kind that causes his wife and children to say, That s good background music. 1

Thank you Pastor Mark for your prayerful visits during my stay at the hospital. Many thanks to those who sent beautiful flowers, and cards, with all those comforting notes, and the welcome phone calls. I was so warmly comforted with the sunshine prayer blanket. As I grasp each carefully tied knot, I give THANKS for all those prayers. They are truly a blessing to me, and I know they were heard by Him and answered. Psalm 34:3 Heartfelt Love, Clara Confirmation Classes Calling all youth 6 th grade thru 12th grade! Would you like to know more about the United Methodist Church or our church? Then come to confirmation classes starting September 11 from 5-7 pm here at the church. We will be starting confirmation classes in the fall. They will meet once a month on the second Sunday of the month Starting in September. Dates: September 11 October 9 November 13 January 8 February 12 March 12 (date pending) With the youth being confirmed during worship on Easter Sunday. We will be taking 2 field trips to other places of worship, a Seven Day Adventist church for worship and to see a Greek Orthodox Church or a Jewish Synagogue. 5 On Saturday, September 17, we have an opportunity to hear an outstanding team of church Consultants - Bill Easum and Bill Tenny-Brittian - at a one-day conference here at Redeemer Church. I attended a 3 day worship with Bill Easum in 1996 and it revolutionized my understanding of Pastoral leadership. I was at a crossroads in my ministry and felt stuck in my attempt to grow our congregation here at Redeemer. Bill had a toolbox full of practical ways to help reach new people, do worship differently, restructure administratively, and disciple new and existing believers. This is an event that you won t want to miss. - Personally recruit some of your lay leadership to come with you. - Encourage your church to help pay the costs. You will be grateful that you did. - Catch the vision of building a culture of disciples who make disciples. 7 Back to School kick-off ideas The wheels on the bus will be rolling in another six weeks. Is your church ready for some end-of-summer fun? JEREMY STEELE United Methodist Communications Water Balloon Extravaganza If music isn t your thing, take advantage of the final moments of summer to have a massive water balloon day. Start with a water balloon creation race. Who wants to fill a gazillion water balloons? Start the event by asking the students to do just that. Borrow a bunch of waterholes and splitters so you have plenty of outlets and then give small groups of students water balloon kits that include nozzles. Award a prize for the group that fills the most balloons in 10 minutes. If you want to speed up the process, Bunch-O-Balloons can help you fill 100 balloons in just seconds! It s a beautiful thing. Next, spend time working on your accuracy with water-balloon target practice. You can, of course, create simple bull s-eyes to attach to the back wall of the church. Make it even more fun by putting a bull s-eye on each volunteer to wear or hold as moving targets. If you have some wide-open space, break out the water balloon hole-in-one competition. For this, you ll need a couple of hula hoops and water-balloon sling shots. After dividing into groups of four or five, give someone the hula hoop and the rest of the team water balloons and slingshots. The goal is for the hula hoopers and the sling shooters to work together to get the water balloons through the hoops and on to the other side of the field. Water-balloon partner relays are always a ton of fun. Divide the students into a couple of teams and have them carry a water balloon to the far side of a field and back. The twist is that each balloon must be carried by two students each with a single hand on the balloon at all times. Mud games There are tons of fun mud activities that will tempt your church s young-at-heart. Students and adults alike can have a ton of fun for the price of a load of dirt and some cheap goggles. For this event, you can either dig up the grass to make a big pit or consider calling your local dirt supplier. Let them know what you are doing to make sure they deliver clean dirt without dangerous debris in it. When the dirt arrives, have half of it dumped in one location and half in another. On the day of the event, wet the dirt pile liberally and tell students to wear old clothes. When the students arrive, give ground rules about where they can and cannot go with the dirt. There should be a clearly marked safe zone for parents and those who are there more for the pictures than the mud. Pass out the goggles, jump in and get dirty. With a little preplanning, you might get your fire department to help with the cleanup. They have to test hydrants routinely, and they may schedule one for after the mud play is over to help students clean up in an artificial rainstorm created by the fire fighters test. Or maybe the new mud pit could be the start of your church s community garden. 7
