By doing so, we also claim the title, Christian. Here is an early description of Christians, and we must ask ourselves, Shouldn t this describe us as well? Of Connect/Health & Wellness ksfinnig@gmail.com Office Hours 225 W. State Street Pendleton Mon-Fri 9am-3pm Phone: Fax: Description of Christians (continued from page 1) 130 AD): For the Christians are distinguished from other men [or women] neither by country, nor language, nor the customs which they observe. For they neither inhabit cities of their own, nor employ a peculiar form of speech, nor lead a life which is marked out by any singularity. The course of conduct which they follow has not been devised by any speculation or deliberation of inquisitive men; nor do they, like some, proclaim themselves the advocates of any merely human doctrines. But, inhabiting Greek as well as barbarian cities, according as the lot of each of them has determined and following the customs of the natives in respect to clothing, food, and the rest of their ordinary conduct, they display to us their wonderful and confessedly striking method of life. They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners. As citizens, they share in all things with others, and yet endure all things as if foreigners. Every foreign land is to them as their native country, and every land of their birth as a land of strangers. They marry, as do all [others]; they beget children; but they do not destroy their offspring. They have a common table, but not a common bed. They are in the flesh, but they do not live after the flesh. They pass their days on earth, but they are citizens of heaven. They obey the prescribed laws, and at the same time surpass the laws by their lives. They love all [people] and are persecuted by all. They are unknown and condemned; they are put to death and restored to life. They are poor yet make many rich; they are in lack of all things, and yet abound in all; they are dishonored, and yet in their very dishonor are glorified. They are evil spoken of, and yet are justified; they are reviled, and bless; they are insulted, and repay the insult with honor; they do good yet are punished as evil-doers. When punished, they rejoice as if quickened into life; they are assailed by the Jews as foreigners and are persecuted by the Greeks; yet those who hate them are unable to assign any reason for their hatred. (translated by Roberts-Donaldson) Pastor Doug Walker
3 THE LIGHTHOUSE PAGE 3 Palm Sunday Breakfast a Success!! A special thank you to George & Norma Gasparovic, Mike & Linda Cook, Cherie Reeves and Ella Barrett for your help with the Palm Sunday breakfast. We were able to raise $200 for our camping ministry! CHURCH CAMP: Summer will be here soon along with church camp! If you have children, grandchildren, neighbor kids or anyone else that would benefit from church camp please check out for more information or contact Susan Barrett. Kids in 3rd-6th grade will be attending Camp Lakewood July 29-August 1st this year. We have several campers and volunteers already signed up. Please sign up by April 15th to receive early bird pricing. We have scholarships and assistance available. It has always been our goal to never turn away a child/youth from camp due to finances. If you would like to help send a kid to camp please consider sponsoring a camper for $310 or help with any amount toward our camp fund. Would you like to be a part of our exciting new Sunday School ministry but not sure where to begin? We would love to have your help this summer. It's a great way to see what the fun is all about with a more laid back approach and smaller classes. Please see Jen Roberts, Jennifer Black, Kelsey Maddox or Susan Barrett for information. Mark your calendars for VBS July 9-13th. If you would like to be a part of our Shipwrecked Crew please sign up in the atrium for contact Susan Barrett. All youth 6th grade and up are encouraged to be a part of our volunteer team too. We have openings for everyone!
4 THE LIGHTHOUSE PAGE 4 Although it doesn t feel like itspring is in the air. Living in Indiana, sometimes it s hard to tell what season it is! The month of March is a light month for your student ministry at Pendleton First, due to the students being off for a couple weeks for Spring Break. However, we did manage to make some time to have fun. Our 7th-12th grade student ministry, called C.R.E.W. met on March 4th at the church from 5:30-7:30. We had around 17 students come out and we had a great time. On Sunday March 11th, we partnered with Fall Creek Christian Church Youth and had a Scavenger Hunt. The students split up into teams, piled up in vans and went around town, trying to find clues while also performing certain tasks to complete the hunt! (Don t worry -we had plenty of adult help-and the adults drove!) It was a funny evening to see all the students perform the tasks and find the clues. C.R.E.W. stands for Creating Real Encouraging Witnesses and meets every Sunday night. Our next meeting will be Sunday April 8th from 5:30-7:30 at Pendleton First. We also have an 7th-12 grade outreach youth ministry called 4:12 that meets every Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. at Pendleton First. Our next 4:12 will be Wednesday night March 28th from 6-8. Impact is a student ministry that serves any students ages 4th-6th grade. Impact met on Sunday March 4th, and the students had the opportunity to make some slime! Of course, any youth getting a chance to make slime will take full advantage and thoroughly enjoy it! We played some games, ate snacks and had a lesson about Christ. It was a fun evening. Our next Impact meeting will be Sunday April 8th from 4-5:30 p.m. God Bless, Dustin
5 THE LIGHTHOUSE PAGE 5 First United Methodist Church Ministries Pendleton and Ingalls Church Council Happenings March 14, 2018 In Attendance-Joe Downing, Kyle Hupfer, Greg Kaster, Kelsey Maddox, Jen Roberts, Dale Starks, Doug Walker, Donna Wood 7:00 Devotions (5 Min.) Greg Kaster opened with devotions from the book of Exodus. Acceptance of (10 min.) Minutes/ Happenings- all staff reports were approved. Reports sent (possible list): Trustees/ Facilities; SPRC; CONNECT/ Evangelism; GROW/ Education; COMMIT/ Worship; SERVE/ Missions, Finance Tithe (5 Min.) We continue to pay $1674 each month towards our tithe. Total paid as of 03/14/2018 is $ :20 New Items Playground update discussion South Madison Community Foundation approved the grant Kelsey Maddox submitted for funds to update our playground. The grant was for a match up to $5000. Friendly Flock will contribute funds collected from fundraisers done in the Fall and in the Spring. Kelsey and Jen have been teaching a cross training class for several of the children from our pre-school for a fee, which will be donated to the playground upgrade, along with several other donations from our congregation. A quote from Ryan Coyle (Vive Exterior Designs) was given at $36,000 for complete tear down of existing equipment, ground leveling with proper drainage, new equipment and mulch. Some questions to consider is how much money we want to invest in the update, is the playground used enough for this kind of investment, and what are the positive outcomes for our community. More research will be done and evaluated in the next few months. Dale Starks has agreed to work with Kelsey Maddox on a plan that could include work done in stages and by volunteers from our congregation. Security Plan- The Security Team has been established and will continue to meet every 4 th Monday of the month. More planning is in place to make our church safe and secure in case of fire, storms and active shooter threats. Discussion of Dream List Asphalt parking lot at Ingalls Pastor Doug is working with the town manager and will bring back quotes on how much the asphalt will cost. Status of alley at Pendleton- Pastor Doug and Kyle Hupfer will discuss with the town council members about closing off the alley on the east side of the parking lot. Speeding is an issue sometimes when the children are being dropped off and picked up for Fr. Flock. Our extended parking lot area would still be accessible from Main St. An ongoing discussion will continue. Old Items Missional Church discussion- We will continue to look at ideas submitted on how to become a more Missional Church and how we can use our Ingalls Campus to do this. FYI: Upcoming Events Spring break: March 17-25; (Mar optional) Easter, Apr 1 Pastor Doug Vacation: Apr 26- May 11-Pastor Steve Walker from Emmanuel UMC will fill in for Pastor Doug if needed. 8:30 Adjourn Next Regular Meeting: Wednesday, Apr 11 at 7:00 PM (2 nd Wed of each month) We will have a Charge Conference with our DS to approve Mary Cloud to attend Seminary. 6 THE LIGHTHOUSE PAGE 6 Thanks to all who continue to donate to our food pantry. The target items for the week of April 1st are Chunky Soups & Canned Pastas. When possible, please choose low salt, low sugar or fat-free items. Of course, feel free to donate other food items, if you find a great sale! Also, if you feel moved to contribute toiletries, we would appreciate basic care items, such as soap, shampoo, toilet paper, facial tissues, etc. Thank you for your support! Thanks to everyone who said a prayer for me. Please know each and every thought or prayer was and is greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much. Blessings, Bud Probasco HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT DRUG AWARENESS TRAILER Looks can be deceiving. That s the message behind this unique traveling exhibit. It is an interactive display designed to help parents of teens recognize unfamiliar hazards that are often in plain sight. There are more than 100 items in the trailer that can be signals that a young person could be involved in risky, harmful or even illegal activity. This informational display will be on available during our Health & Wellness Sunday, on April 22. Only Adults are Permitted to View!
