1 ST. PAUL S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH MAY 2014 NEWSLETTER BACK TO WORK Back to work again. Last week was Easter, then came a rejuvenating vacation to Savannah, Georgia, and now, today, it's back to work again. Actually, back to work started last night with the unpacking of the suitcases, the laundry and straightening up our house after a week of someone house and dog sitting for us. And of course, as soon as you begin doing all of that, your mind also begins to fill with all the things that need to get done at the office this week. It's inevitable. In the church we always talk about how Easter is the ultimate and final act of a loving God, and you'd think that because it is God's ultimate loving act, things would be done and finished. But they never are. Now that God in Jesus has death behind him, he is moving here and there and everywhere, showing up to open our eyes, pushing us to see with our hearts and moving our hands to do his work. And God apparently did not get a vacation after Easter whatsoever. God's mind is always on the next thing that needs to happen to transform the world. God is back at work... always. POTATOES ARE COMING Potatoes and more. Ken Getz has graciously agreed to help the church's children to grow potatoes again this year. And flowers. And other things. Take a walk to the garden boxes by the shed and see the progress from week to week. While you are there, utter a little prayer of thanksgiving to God that he showers all of us with food and beauty year after year. Finally, remember the poor and do your share to help erase it from our communities. HOPS AND HYMNS Yes, Lutherans can belt out "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and drink beer at the same time. As a matter of fact, that is probably how the original version was done and some of us are returning to our traditions. Tree of Life Lutheran Church is sponsoring an old-fashioned hymn fest at ABC Brewery on 50 N. Cameron Street in Harrisburg. You may hold your glass of beer, wet your whistle, lubricate your vocal chords and enjoy taking part in some amazing music. The date is May 20th, the time TBA (but most likely 7:30 P.M.). Tell your friends and come. 1

2 GOOD-BYE ALLISON We've thoroughly enjoyed having Allison Johnson as our teaching parish student this past year. She has taught us and learned from us as she keeps moving on the path towards ordained ministry. On May 4, though, we have to say good-bye. Allison will spend her summer serving as a hospital chaplain. In the fall, she will have a heavy academic load at the seminary. We wish her well and send her with our prayers and blessing. And if one day, she be elected bishop we can say that "we knew her when." NEWSLETTER NOTES are due in the Church office by the 10 th of each month. BE A SPONSOR Altar Flowers: Altar flowers beautify the sanctuary for worship, and can be given by congregation members in honor of or in memory of loved ones. The price is $17.50 for one vase or $35 for two vases. If interest in sponsoring weekly altar flowers, please fill out the Flower/Bulletin Chart in the upper Sunday School room on bulletin board. Bulletins: Sponsors for bulletins are also accepted. The cost is $15.00 per week. These can be in honor of or in memory of loved ones or to the Glory of God. If interested you can fill out the Flower/Bulletin Chart in the upper Sunday School room. You will be notified via a postcard usually the month prior to your sponsorship. 2

3 NEW HOPE MINISTRY FOOD COLLECTION is the 1 st Sunday of each month, but if you forget bring it in the next Sunday you attend. They currently need the following items: Canned Vegetables, Peanut butter, Canned Fruit, Canned Tuna, Shampoo & Conditioner. Thank you. KEEP US INFORMED: If you go in the hospital or your address has changed, or you need pastoral assistance call Pastor Anne at or please call the Church Office at Don't assume that someone will let the Church know - it doesn't happen. In most cases we are the last to know. So please keep us informed of any need or change. REMINDER - Sandwiches are coming. Orders will be due May 15th and delivery will be May 20th. There's a collection box in Social room off of Sanctuary. Thank You SPRING CLEANING - Remember St. Paul's has a collection box to collect you clothing you no longer have a use of. THANK YOU from the Sewing ladies and gentleman to anyone who may have contributed to our fabric supply weather it was leftover from your project, a bed sheet, blanket, clothing you no longer want (maybe torn) or fabric samples (great) thanks Steve...there was at least 20 quilts sent to Harrisburg street people plus, this past winter. Come in some Tuesday from 8:00 to 3:00 p.m. except week of sandwich project then sewing is on Monday. Coming School Bags.. 5 Pastor Anne offered devotions from John 3. Secretary s Report: Tim Morgan made a motion to accept- 2 nd by Steve Casella. Motion carried. Treasurer s Report: Ron Shawler made a motion to accept- 2 nd by Wendy Cekovich. Motion carried. Looked at samples, meeting again April 7 th and then starting with the build. Ministry Reports: Christian Education A motion was made by Tim Morgan to accept the Ministry Reports- 2 nd by Scott Maier. Motion carried. New Business: Annual Congregation Meeting Cemetary Update: letter from Don Foore Open Comments: Lower price in effect on dumpster.
