1 Informer 2016 Term One Week Eight Issue Nine Thursday 24 March 2016 At Easter time Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus. This year, on Monday 21 March, St John s students also reflected on Harmony Day. According to the website, Harmony Day, 21 March, celebrates Australia s cultural diversity. It s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common. The central message for Harmony Day is that everyone belongs, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. On the day when some 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ broke down barriers in his Father s temple, clearing out the money lenders and animal sellers who exploiting the pilgrims who had come from far away to celebrate the festivals of Passover and that of Unleavened Bread, he opened the way for all people to return to a simpler, more direct relationship with God and one another. As part of our Harmony Day activities, the students all agreed to help fold 1,000 orange paper cranes, symbolic of a wish or prayer for peace in our troubled world. We do not live in harmony as God intended and it is strange that Japan, one of the most aggressive countries in World War II, is the only country in the world to include peace as part of their country s constitution. In the aftermath of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and in view of the horrific war crimes perpetrated by Japanese soldiers, that country decided, No more war, ever. People all over the world fold the 1,000 cranes as an expression of prayer for a peaceful world and these are sent to Hiroshima in time for the annual memorial service. This year our cranes, which were blessed on Harmony Day, will also be sent to Hiroshima. Now that Palm Sunday and Harmony Day have been and gone, we all continue our preparations for Easter itself. Here are some points for the other days in the lead up to this, the day when the Lord s promise of life after death was demonstrated once and all, for everyone to see: Maundy Thursday 24 March The disciples had supper with Jesus. This is known as the Lord s Supper. Jesus washed the disciples feet that night. Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemene. Good Friday 25 March Early on Friday morning the soldiers came. Judas gave Jesus a kiss. Jesus had told Peter that he would deny him. Three times Peter said that he did not know Jesus. Peter was so sorry for what he had done. Jesus was taken before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor, who sentenced him to death. Jesus was nailed to the cross. Jesus took his last breath and cried out Everything is done, Father I put myself in your hands. Jesus died. After he had died, they wrapped up his body and laid his dead body in a new tomb. They rolled a big stone in the way. Easter Sunday He rose again on the third day. Death could not keep the Lord down. He died on the cross for our sins. Yes, Jesus lives. He has risen! He has risen indeed! 2 From the Principal.. On Monday we celebrated Harmony Day. This year the focus was on the statement everyone belongs. Throughout the day I witnessed many different activities our students participated in to help make this message clear. We are all made in God s image so of course we are unique and special. This is certainly something worth celebrating. To commemorate this day, our students made orange paper cranes with Mrs Helen Westermann our language teacher. Orange is the official colour for Harmony Day. Our students have a goal to make 1,000 orange paper cranes so that in August they can be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Museum. The tradition of making paper cranes has existed since 1985 and is something that our school is happy to be a part of this year. Children from all around the world make these cranes and send them to the Hiroshima International School where they then place the cranes at the Peace Park in Hiroshima. This is a way children from everywhere can contribute to the promotion of world peace and harmony. If making origami paper cranes is something you would like to do from home to help us reach our goal please contact your classroom teachers. Parent/Teacher Interviews As you are aware, our Parent/Teacher Interviews will be taking place on Tuesday 5 April and Wednesday 6 April This year we are going to do things a little differently when it comes to parents booking in a time to meet with teachers. We have set up an online booking system where parents and caregivers will be able to book a suitable time to meet with teachers. Please keep an eye out for a letter that will be coming home soon which will give you step by step instructions on how to book times for your children. It literally only takes a couple of minutes to book. If for any reason you do not have access to the internet or need help with entering your bookings please come into the school and we will be able to help you. Kapunda /Marrabel Bus There are a number of students who now use our Kapunda/Marrabel bus service. Please note that the cost of this service is $5.00 per day per student. If payments are not made on the day, fees will be added to your school accounts. Page 2

3 Easter ST JOHN S LUTHERAN SCHOOL, EUDUNDA INC. From the Principal continued.. At Chapel on Monday Pastor Peter Pfitzner shared with us the events that will lead us all towards Easter this weekend. He shared that last Sunday was Palm Sunday and what a celebration it was when Jesus entered the town of Jerusalem. We also heard about Jesus washing the disciples feet, the last supper and Jesus dying on the cross and then the resurrection. It is truly an amazing story that has a life changing effect on all of us. Over the past few weeks students have been filling our front office area with origami crosses to remind us all of what Christ has done for us. In the photo are a few students that helped to place the crosses on my door and across Mrs Jones' desk. Blessings to you all over Easter and I pray that your Easter time includes some reflection of what Christ has done for you and me. Have a blessed week. Paula Skinner Principal SAPSASA Swimming News.. On Friday 18 March 2016, we went to the SA Aquatics and Leisure Centre in Adelaide to compete in SAPSASA swimming. It was a great experience. There were lots of other swimmers from all over South Australia and lots of people watching from the stands. Blake swam in the 10 year old 50m freestyle relay. His team came 5th. Thomas swam in the 11 year old 50m freestyle relay. His team came 4th. We were part of the Barossa and Light SAPSASA team. The swimmers in our team did really well overall. It was a great day. 6 Learner Profile Attribute Thinkers.. ST JOHN S LUTHERAN SCHOOL, EUDUNDA INC. Thinking in CCT Reception to Year Two Focus: Why do People Think Differently? Reception to Year Two Focus: De Bono s Blue Thinking Hat - Planning The students planned a special surprise and presentation for their teachers. The children needed to consider what thinking was needed and what the next step was in their planning. This process was student driven and presented by the children on the day following CCT class. Year Three/Four Class Focus: De Bono s Green Thinking Hat - Creativity Students took turns ordering items from most important to least important. As a class we discussed questions like: Why do you think is most/least important?, Did we all order the items in the same way? Why/Why not? and How would a person in a poorer country order the items?. Year Five to Year Seven: Thinking Skill - Application S t u d e n t s c r e a t e d interesting solutions to moving people through the m a n g r o v e s c a u s i n g minimal damage. The students went on to consider the positives (yellow hat) and negatives (black hat) of their solutions. Using the ipads the students had a go at drawing and animating their solutions. Year Five to Seven Focus: Thinking Skill - Comprehension Presentations were created by the students on the app explain everything to demonstrate their understanding of surface tension. The students were asked to interpret and communicate their learning in their own words. After learning about surface tension students applied their knowledge to the world around them finding examples where surface tension was helpful and not helpful. Using their understanding of surface tension students experimented to make a piece of cork float in the middle of a glass of water (using surface tension to slightly overfill the glass, thus creating a convex meniscus and the highest point for the cork to float in the middle of the glass). 8 From the Care Coordinator.. ST JOHN S LUTHERAN SCHOOL, EUDUNDA INC. Seasons for Growth Changes and loss are issues that affect all of us at some time in our lives. At St John s we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce, or other circumstances, young people and children may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively by exploring how we can learn to live with and grow from these experiences. The core intentions of this programme are the development of resilience and emotional literacy to promote social and emotional wellbeing. The programme is educational in nature and does not provide therapy. St John s is pleased to be able to offer this important programme and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved. If you feel that your child/children would benefit from participating in the Seasons for Growth programme, please speak to the child s class teacher or Lynn Grosser (Care Coordinator). Prayer and Care.. We pray for those within our school community dealing with illnesses, loss and grief. We pray for our families and staff as they reflect and celebrate Easter. Page 8
