2 Leader BIBLE STUDY Use Week of: Why did Jesus have to die? Why couldn t He just say, You are forgiven? God is just and requires due payment for sin. To simply forgive sin without requiring a payment would be unjust. According to God s Word, the payment of sin is death. (Rom. 6:23) But not only is God just, He is also loving. That is why Jesus was willing to die in our place. He loved us. 2 God s law for the people was plain. Read Deuteronomy 6:5. But God s people, and all people, have broken the law. We have loved other things more than we love God. That is sin. Jesus purpose for coming to earth was to save us from our sin. (Matt. :2) Jesus came to die to show God s love to us (Rom. 5:7-8) so that whoever believes in Him might not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:6) Jesus came to die so that we would be forgiven. (Eph. :7) Jesus came to die to bring us to God. ( Pet. 3:8) Jesus died on the cross to satisfy the wrath of God toward sin. Jesus resurrection proved that God was satisfied with Jesus sacrifice. If Jesus had died but not been raised up, He would have been like military leaders who died without a throne. (Acts 5:33-37) But Jesus conquered death, just as He said He would. (John 2:9-2) Jesus resurrection gives us hope for our resurrection. (Rom. 6:5) And Romans 8: says that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will raise our bodies to life. Jesus crucifixion and resurrection are not the end of the story, but the center. Everything that was written about Jesus in the Old Testament and spoken by the prophets was coming true. As you teach kids this Bible story, emphasize the gospel: the good news of who Jesus is and what He has done. Younger Kids Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 20 Session 2

4 THE BIBLE STORY Jesus Crucifixion and Resurrection Matthew 26:36 28:0; John 8: 20:8 Jesus came with His disciples to a place called Gethsemane (geth SEM uh nih). He said to them, Sit here while I go over there and pray. Jesus became very sad and troubled. Jesus went a little farther. He fell facedown and prayed to God, Father! If it is possible, take this suffering away from Me. But only if it is part of Your plan. Jesus came back and found the disciples asleep. Again, Jesus went away and prayed to God. Then He found His disciples sleeping. He said to them, Are you still asleep? Get up, for it is almost time. Someone is going to betray Me. Suddenly Judas arrived. A large crowd carrying swords and clubs was with him. Judas kissed Jesus so the crowd would know who Jesus was. The men grabbed Jesus and arrested Him. Peter pulled out his sword and tried to stop the men, but Jesus told him to stop. Jesus followers ran away, but Peter stayed nearby. A slave girl saw him and asked, Aren t you one of Jesus disciples? No, I m not! Peter said. Twice more as Peter waited to see what was happening to Jesus, someone asked him if he was a follower of Jesus. Peter denied it. The men who arrested Jesus led Him to the high priest. The priests and high council were trying to find a reason to kill Jesus, but they could not. The high priest asked, Are you the Messiah, the Son of God? Jesus replied, Yes, that s right. The high priest said, Ah ha! He has spoken against God. Caiaphas and the council did not want to believe Jesus was God s Son. They said Jesus was lying, but Jesus cannot lie! The crowd answered, He deserves to die! They spit in Jesus face and beat Him. The next morning, the chief priests and elders led Jesus to Pilate, the governor. Are you the King of the Jews? Pilate asked. Yes, that s right, Jesus replied. The men accused Jesus of various crimes, but Jesus said nothing. What should I do with Jesus the Messiah? Pilate asked the crowd. They all answered, Crucify Him! Pilate did not think Jesus had done Younger Kids Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 20 Session 2 3

5 anything wrong, but he said, Do whatever you want. The governor s soldiers put a scarlet robe on Jesus. They made a crown out of thorns and put it on His head. Then they mocked Him, Here is the King of the Jews! Then they beat Him and led Him away to be killed. The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross. They put a sign above His head that said: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Two criminals were crucified next to Him. From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness covered the land. Then Jesus cried out, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and then He died. Suddenly, the curtain in the temple sanctuary split in two, from top to bottom, and there was an earthquake. One of the men guarding Jesus body said, This man really was God s Son! That evening, Jesus was buried in a rich man s tomb cut into a rock. A stone was sealed in front of the tomb so that no one could steal Jesus body. Three days later, on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene (MAG duh leen) and the other Mary went to see the tomb. Suddenly there was an earthquake as an angel of the Lord came to the tomb. He rolled back the stone and was sitting on it. The guards were so afraid that they fainted. The angel spoke to the women, Don t be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, but He is not here. He has been resurrected, just like He said He would. In fact, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. The women left the tomb quickly and with great joy. They ran to tell the disciples the news. Just then Jesus met them. Good morning! He said. The women worshiped Him. Don t be afraid, Jesus told them. Go tell My disciples to meet Me in Galilee. They will see Me there. Christ Connection: The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus is the center of the gospel. We deserve to die because of our sin, but Jesus died in our place. He was the blood sacrifice made once and for all for the forgiveness of sin. God was pleased with Jesus sacrifice and raised Jesus from the dead to reign as King over all creation. We are forgiven only through Jesus. (Acts 4:2) 4

They are used to hold things together. I can take two pieces of wood and connect them by hitting a nail until it goes through both. One day, many years ago, they were used for something else. Before we find out how they were used, let s look back at what we discovered last time we met. Timeline map ( minute) Leader How did Jesus enter Jerusalem to celebrate Passover? That s right! He entered on a donkey to cheers of Hosanna! The people celebrated Him as the Savior and King promised in the Old Testament. How did people act when they saw Jesus? People welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem as their King. Jesus came into town, healed people, and cleared the temple of those misusing it. Younger Kids Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 20 Session 2 7

8 Big picture question ( minute) Leader Who has their Bible? The Bible is all about Jesus, and the story of Jesus would be incomplete without. Let s hear today s big picture question, What did Jesus do for sinners? This Is Love song Key Passage Slide or Poster Hosanna in the Highest song Jesus Crucifixion and Resurrection video Bibles, per kid Bible Story Picture Slide or Poster Sing (5 minutes) Leader The story of is a true love story. It s the story we call the Bible. Hold your Bible up if you have it. Awesome! Our sin separated us from God, but God had a plan to bring us back to Him. This is true love. Let s praise God! Sing together This Is Love. Key passage (4 minutes) Leader Does anyone know what hosanna means? Hosanna means save now. God s people had been forced to follow the rules of other kings and nations for hundreds of years. They were ready for the promised Savior. Many of them believed it was Jesus. They cried out, Save us now! That s all part of our key passage. Show the slide or poster of the unit s key passage, Matthew 2:9. Lead the boys and girls to read the verse together. Sing together Hosanna in the Highest. Tell the Bible story (0 minutes) Leader Cries of hosanna didn t last long. Just days later, Jesus faced the penalty for our sins. Open your Bible to Matthew 26 to see what happened next. We will find the answer to the big picture question, What did Jesus do for sinners? Show the Jesus Crucifixion and Resurrection video, or choose to tell the Bible story in your own words using the 8

9 script provided. For a shorter version of the story, read only the bolded text. Leader Jesus knew that He would suffer and die. He prayed that He wouldn t have to if there was another way to pay for our sin. There was no other way. If Jesus didn t take our punishment for sin, we would not be able to be with God forever in heaven. Judas told the Jewish leaders where to find Jesus. The leaders didn t like Jesus. They were jealous of Him and didn t believe He was God s Son. They convinced Pontius Pilate, King Herod, and the people to punish Jesus even though He did nothing wrong. They beat Him and then nailed Him to a cross to die. Then, they put His body in a tomb. On the third day, the stone was rolled away, and Jesus was raised from the dead. Jesus is alive today! It may have seemed as if the Jews and Romans are the ones who killed Jesus; however, Jesus gave His own life for us. He died for our sin. What did Jesus do for sinners? Jesus death and resurrection paid the penalty for sins and provided the promise of new life. That means Jesus died and came back to life, so we can be free from sin and one day go to heaven. Ask the following review questions:. Where did Jesus go to pray? (Gethsemane, Matthew 26:36) 2. Which disciple betrayed Jesus? (Judas, Matthew 26:47-48) 3. What happened to the temple curtain after Jesus died? (It split from top to bottom, Matthew 27:5) 4. What day of the week was the tomb found empty? (first day or Sunday; Matthew 28:,6) Younger Kids Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 20 Session 2 9

Leader Have you ever told a friend about Jesus? What did you say? We call the story of what Jesus did for us the gospel. The gospel is the good news about Jesus. It s the answer to the big picture question, What did Jesus do for sinners? Jesus death and resurrection paid the penalty for sins and provided the promise of new life. The Gospel: God s Plan for Me (optional) Use Scripture and the guide provided with this session to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian. 12 The Gospel: God s Plan for Me Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis : from the Bible. Read Revelation 4: or Colossians :6-7 aloud and explain what these verses mean. We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:6 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9. Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:2; or Peter 3:8. We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 0:9-0,3. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus. Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. 2

Jesus death and resurrection paid the penalty for sins and provided the promise of new life. Key Passage: Matthew 2:9 Unit Christ Connection: God s plan for redemption is fulfilled through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Key Passage Slide or Poster dry erase board and markers (optional) Bibles, per kid Small Group Visual Pack Big Picture Question Slide or Poster paper marker Key passage activity (5 minutes) Show the slide or poster of the unit s key passage, Matthew 2:9. Lead the boys and girls to read the verse together. Say Many of the people in Jerusalem had seen Jesus as the promised Savior from David s family. Just days before Jesus trial, they were shouting, Save us! After His trial, those shouts became Crucify Him! They didn t understand that Jesus did come to save them, but He came to save them from their sin. Since the people in Jerusalem shouted the key passage, invite individual kids to shout out the verse. Invite a leader to yell out a kid s name; that kid will then shout the key passage. You may also call on two or more kids to shout it together. Repeat as time allows. Bible story review (0 minutes) Encourage the kids to find Matthew 26 in their Bibles. Help them as needed. Say All four Gospels tell about Jesus death and resurrection. What books make up the Gospels? Younger Kids Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 20 Session 2 3

14 (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) Where are the Gospels located in the Bible? (beginning of the New Testament) Use the small group visual pack to show kids where today s Bible story is on the timeline. Review the Bible story provided using the bolded text, or summarize the story in your own words. Invite all the kids to the center of the room. Place a chair in each corner, and put a sign or example of one of the following items so a different item is in each chair: nails, crown of thorns, tomb, cross. Announce the following statements, and encourage the kids to run to the corner that fits the statement best. These were used on Jesus feet and hands. (nails) This was placed on Jesus head. (crown of thorns) Jesus and two criminals were placed on this. (cross) Jesus body was laid here. (tomb) A sign that read KING OF THE JEWS was placed at the top of this. (cross) A rock was placed in the door to keep Jesus here. (tomb) These were used to hold Jesus to the cross. (nails) Say What the Romans and Jewish leaders did to Jesus wasn t fair. Jesus never sinned. We deserve punishment for our sins, but Jesus took it for us instead. Three days after being buried in a guarded tomb, God raised Jesus. This was proof that Jesus had paid for our sin. When we repent and trust in Jesus, we accept God s gift of salvation. Show the big picture question slide or poster. Say What did Jesus do for sinners? Jesus death and resurrection paid the penalty for sins and provided the promise of new life. 4

15 paper plates gray or brown markers or crayons scissors stapler gray or brown paper glue, craft sticks (optional) Activity: Paper plate tomb Provide each kid with a paper plate. Allow the kids to color the bottom of the plate gray or brown, like a tomb. Instruct the kids to fold the plate in half and cut along the fold. Demonstrate how to cut a small door out of one of the plate halves. A leader should then staple the two pieces together around the curved edge with the colored sides facing out. The tomb should stand up on its own. Invite the kids to write Jesus is alive! inside the tomb opening. Give each kid a brown or gray piece of paper. Encourage the kids to make a paper wad and place it in front of the tomb opening. When the stone is rolled away, the tomb is empty. If you have extra time, demonstrate how to make three crosses using glue and craft sticks. Kids can place these in between the plate pieces around the staples at the top of the tomb. Say Jesus is not dead. Though He died for our sins, God raised Him from the dead three days later. As promised in the Old Testament, Jesus is the forever Savior of those who trust in Him.
