You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. 7 As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts, make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. With your whole Church throughout the world, we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. 10 Only 28% of people on the Taranaki Cathedral database have been visited as part of the fundraising effort for The Cathedral Project. About 380 parishioners still need to be visited. More volunteer visitors are urgently needed to reach the church s $2 million internal fundraising target and to allow work on the Cathedral strengthening to start. Could this be the job for you? People s warden and fundraising visitor Julie Otene has seen first-hand the success of visiting cathedral supporters to help raise the money needed to earthquake strengthen and develop the cathedral site. Why did you volunteer to be a visitor? I learnt how this type of campaign works and how successful it is for capital fundraising projects like ours and felt that the visiting was an achievable way for me to contribute. Capital fundraising campaigns involve volunteer-led, person-to-person contact, seeking financial support for a specific project. Donations are one-off - albeit many are spread over the five years of the project. It is amaz ing how giving a little regularly accumulates significantly and is often more manageable. However, there is a defined end date to the giving, it is not on going. Does it make you uncomfortable going into people s homes asking for money? That s the thing, I don t feel like I m asking for money. We are visiting people to have a chat with them, talk to them about the project and the potential for the church and the community. It s a one-to-one opportunity to share the story, and for them to engage and give their opinion. People generally say they were waiting to be asked about giving. But I m not too worried about if they give or not. Success is also being able to show external funding organisations that we have done everything we can to raise as much money as we can within the church. That means demonstrating that we have visited everyone on the database. It s not the job of a visitor to convince someone to give, it s merely an opportunity to do so once they have been given all the information about what the complete project can achieve. Has the visiting been successful so far in raising funds? For the small percentage of people in the database we have been able to visit so far, it s been very successful. Not everyone is able to donate and that s fine but the pledges still average out at about $3000 per person visited. As of 7 November, the portion of the $2 million commitment made by parishioners and those with a strong connection to the cathedral stood at $891,440. If it is so successful, why do you need more visitors now? Time is running out and we still have a lot of people to visit. Engineers are close to having details finalised for phase one of the project the earthquake strengthening and refurbishment of the cathedral but momentum will be lost, and the project may have to be put on hold if we cannot raise the money needed now. What if I have thought about being a visitor, but don t know what to say? Volunteer visitors are given full coaching and assistance. You can either be assigned a few people from the database to visit or choose them yourself. Why do you think The Cathedral Project so important to support? I am passionate about this project because it s an intergenerational legacy project providing our community with a cultural, historical and spiritual legacy. It s so many things in one package. Our forefathers had the foresight to work hard to provide public amenities for our region. This is our opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations. 11 The Weekly letter is from Archdeacon Trevor Dear Parishioners, We will remember them. This year Remembrance Sunday, which is set as being the Sunday nearest Armistice Day, is on Armistice Day, and of course is particularly significant because it is the centenary of that day when the First World War ended, with the armistice coming into force at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. In New Zealand there are special observances throughout our land, but in Great Britain, the United States and Canada, Remembrance Sunday every year is marked as a holiday, with services and parades. It is their equivalent to our ANZAC Day. This year there are three strands to our remembering. Firstly, we celebrate as our forebears did the ending of the First World War; secondly, we remember all those who made the supreme sacrifice whilst serving our country; and thirdly, we remember those personally known to us who served our country and we give thanks for that service and their willingness to put their lives on the line when asked. We remember the 100,444 troops New Zealand sent to WW1: especially the 18,166 who were killed, which included 78 from this parish, plus the 1,000 who died within 5 years of the war's end; the 41,317 who were wounded; the 507 who died in training in New Zealand; and the 333 who committed suicide in the years following their return. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. At 11am there will be a two minute silence, followed by the Roaring Chorus a nationwide pealing of church bells and general cacophany. The Cathedral bell will be part of this. Then will come the commemorative service at the Cenotaph in Queen Street led by Archbishop Philip Richardson and Revd. Albie Martin. The bronz e statue Taranaki Salute to The ANZACS is to be unveiled. There will be a fly-past as well a display of vehicles used during war activities, and a display of maritime vessels in the harbour. This afternoon at 2.30pm the New Zealand premiere of Karl Jenkins choral work THE PEACEMAKERS preceded by NZ composer Dwayne Bloomfield s PASSCHENDAELE is being performed at the TSB Theatre Royal. Presented by Ars Nova Choir, Ars Antiqua Orchastra, the Devon Hotel New Plymouth Brass and Jubilate Choir (NPGHS) under the direction of Christopher Luke and Leigh Martin. Tickets $30/$25/$20 On Thursday 15 November 2018, Christopher Luke will present his 75th Cathedral organ recital. Come and celebrate this occasion with organ music by Malcolm Archer, J.S. Bach, Edward Elgar, Karl Jenkins, Arthur Sullivan and works by Luke himself. The final Lunchtime Organ Recital for 2018 will begin at 12.15pm followed by refreshments. Admission is by gold coin. Proudly supported by the Music Innovation Trust of Taranaki and the TSB Community Trust. Men s Breakfast. Our inaugural Mens breakfast is next Saturday. This is a St Mary s Outreach Initiative for the men of the Parish. When: Saturday 17th November 7.30am at the Peace Lounge. This term's focus is "Preparing the Manger" in which we will look at what it means to prepare the manger for Christmas with oneself, with each other (in youth group), with the sick and lonely, with our families and friends and with the world.
