Thomas A Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Welcome Welcome to this Mass which we celebrate to recall the ways in which Christ called Des and some of the ways in which Des responded to His call. The Eucharist is described as the source and summit of our faith and for most of his life Des endeavoured to live this out as a daily communicant. As our celebrants, Fr Chris Ross and Fr John Lisle, enter the sanctuary, we invite you to prepare yourself to enter into this period where we reflect on these Mysteries that ultimately derive from this Mystery which we try to imperfectly condense into that three-lettered word, G-O-D which sits at the heart of each of our lives and of All Life. Take Des into your arms and welcome him into heaven where there is no pain, sorrow, anxiety or unknowing. 3 First Reading (Julian Coyne) A reading from the Book of Wisdom (3:1-9) The souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise, they did appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving us, like annihilation; but they are in peace. If they experienced punishment as men see it, their hope was rich with immortality; slight was their affliction, great will their blessings be. God has put them to the test and prove them worthy to be with him; he has tested them like Gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a holocaust. When the time comes for his visitation they will shine out; as sparks run through the stubble, so will they. They shall judge nations, rule over peoples, and you, Lord, will be their king for ever. 4 Second Reading (Phoebe Coyne) A reading from St Paul s Second Letter to Timothy (3:1-9) The time is here for me to leave this life. I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance and I have kept the faith. Now, waiting for me is the prize of victory awarded for a righteous life, the prize which the Lord, the righteous judge will give me on that Day; and not only to me, but to all those who wait with love for Him to appear. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation (Taize chant please join in after the cantor) Cantor: Gospel Gospel (Fr John Lisle) A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (5:1-12) When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be fed. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5 Homily Homily (Fr Chris Ross OSM) Prayers of the Faithful Fr Chris Ross: Let us turn to our loving Father in prayer for our departed brother, Des. Laurie Phillips: In Baptism Des was given the pledge of eternal life, may he now be admitted into the company and communion of saints. Lord Hear Us. Lord Hear Our Prayer. Rosalie Carcione: In his life Uncle Des was a good man, we ask God the Father to see in him the image of Jesus and welcome him home. Lord Hear Us. Lord Hear Our Prayer. Stephen Melville: Lord Jesus, you wept at the tomb of your friend Lazarus, console us in our grief with the reassurance of seeing Des again. Lord Hear Us. Lord Hear Our Prayer. Anne Oliver: God our Father, we ask your blessing on our nation, on all the Christian people, on all the great faiths as our human family struggles forward seeking the answers to what our brother Des now knows. Fr Chris Ross: Lord God, Almighty Father, may all of your people gathered here today to commend to you their departed brother, Des, be reunited with him when the fullness of your Kingdom comes. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Liturgy of the Eucharist :Offertory The Offertory gifts will be brought forward by Des s remaining sisters and brother. In the quietude of this time as the Eucharist is prepared we invite you to reflect on all the gifts given to each of us in our lives and the offerings we make back to God in thankfulness for all that has been given to us. Through Your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God forever. 5

6 Prayer over the Gifts Holy, Holy, Holy... 6 By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the Divinity of Christ, who humbled Himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are You, Lord, God of all creation. Through Your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God forever. Lord God, we ask You to receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer You with humble and contrite heart. Lord, wash away my iniquity, cleanse me from my sins. Pray brothers and sisters that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His Church. Lord, receive the gifts we offer for the salvation of Des. May Christ be merciful in judging our brother Des. for he believed in Christ as his Lord and Saviour, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. 7 Eucharistic Prayer (Please kneel) Father, You are holy indeed, and all creation rightly gives You praise. All life, all holiness comes from You through Your Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord, by the working of the Holy Spirit. From age to age You gather a people to Yourself, so that from east to west a perfect offering may be made to the glory of Your name. And so, Father, we bring You these gifts. We ask You to make them holy by the power of Your Spirit, that they may become the body and blood of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this eucharist. On the night He was betrayed, He took bread and gave You thanks and praise. He broke the bread, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take this, all of you and eat it: This is My Body, which will be given up for you. When supper was ended, He took the cup. Again He gave You thanks and praise, gave the cup to His disciples, and said: Take this, all of you, and drink from it: This is the cup of My Blood, the blood of the New and Everlasting Covenant. It will be shed for you and for all, so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of Me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim Your death, Lord Jesus, until You come in glory. Father, calling to mind the death Your Son endured for our salvation... through Christ Our Lord, from whom all good things come. Through Him, with Him, in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is Yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. 7

8 Communion Rite Let us pray with confidence to the Father in the words our Saviour gave us. Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us, And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Deliver us Lord from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us free from sin, and protect us from all anxiety, as we wait in joyful hope, for the coming of our saviour Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours, now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, You said to Your apostles I leave you peace, My peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of Your Church, and grant us the peace and unity of Your kingdom, where You live for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. 9 Breaking of the Bread May this mingling of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to those who receive it. Be Still composed and sung by Amanda McKenna Lord God, Your Son Jesus Christ gave us the Sacrament of His Body and Blood, to guide us on our pilgrim way to Your kingdom. May our brother Des, who shared in the eucharist, come to the banquet of life Christ has prepared for us. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. 10 Prayer of Commendation and Farewell Into your hands, Father of mercies, we commend our brother Des, in sure and certain hope that, together with all who have died in Christ, he will rise with Him on the last day. We thank you for the blessings which you bestowed upon Des in this life; they are signs to us of your goodness and of our fellowship with the saints in Christ. Merciful Lord, turn towards us and listen to our prayers; open the gates of paradise to our brother, and help us who remain to comfort one another with the assurances of faith, until we all meet in Christ and are with you and our brother forever. Amen. Saints of God, come to his aid! Come to meet him, angels of the Lord! Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High. May Christ, who called you, take you to himself; may angels lead you to Abraham s side. Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High. Give him eternal rest, 0 Lord, and may your light shine on him for ever. Receive his soul and present him to God the Most High. The celebrant now blesses Des with water and incenses the area around the coffin. The water reminds us of our baptism at the beginning of our spiritual journey. The incense is a sign of our onward journey to heaven and our hope for resurrection in the communion of saints. 10

We invite you to join us for light refreshments at The Warehouse Cafe 221 Onslow Road SHENTON PARK Des always wanted a big celebration on his passing and in order to give effect to that we have sent funds to the three hotels he owned at Yalgoo, Mt Helena and Bruce Rock for the owners to shout the bar. Next Tuesday, on what would have been Des s 92nd birthday, his immediate family will be lunching at the Mt Helena Hotel before returning to host a catered afternoon tea for the staff and residents of Joseph Cooke Hostel and Thomas Perrott Village in appreciation of the friendship and support they extended to Mum and Dad during the last period of their lives. 11
