2 I pray that you can understand how wide and how long and how high and how deep Christ's love is. [Ephesians 3:18] Liturgist Grace to you and peace from God our Creator, the love at our beginning and without end, in our midst and with us. God is with us, here we find new life. Liturgist Let us give thanks for the coming of God's reign of justice and love. Jesus Christ is good news for the poor, release for the captives, recovery of sight for the blind and liberty for those who are oppressed. The Confession and Absolution / Te Hohou-i-te-rongo Please sit. God has promised forgiveness [silence] Liturgist Let us confess our sins. Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ's sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen. Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you and set you free. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. God strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal. Amen. The Gloria is said, as a cry of thanksgiving to God. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Liturgist Kia mau te rongo o te Karaiti ki o tatou ngakau. The peace of Christ rule in our hearts. The word of Christ dwell in us richly. A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 2

3 The Collect Gathering Prayer is said together / Hei konei te inoi o te rä Generous God, you show compassion to the hungry and the needy, grant us the grace to share freely of our limited resources; help us to value every contribution offered and to give and receive graciously of your love. Through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever, Amen. Please be seated for the Readings / Nga Karaipiture E noho The Old Testament reading will only be given at the 8am service Reader A Reading from the second book of Samuel [chapter 11:1-15] In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel with him; they ravaged the Ammonites, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on the roof of the king s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful. David sent someone to inquire about the woman. It was reported, This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. So David sent messengers to fetch her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself after her period.) Then she returned to her house. The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, I am pregnant '. So David sent word to Joab, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the people fared, and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, Go down to your house, and wash your feet. Uriah went out of the king s house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, Uriah did not go down to his house, David said to Uriah, You have just come from a journey. Why did you not go down to your house? Uriah said to David, The ark and Israel and Judah remain in booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing. Then David said to Uriah, Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day. On the next day, David invited him to eat and drink in his presence and made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may be struck down and die. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Please take note of your nearest exit. Page 3 Emergency assembly point: Vets for Pets car park

4 Reader A Reading from the epistle of Paul to the Ephesians [chapter 3:14-21] For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. At 10am we sing this hymn in preparation for the Gospel 1. Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost, taught by thee, we covet most of thy gifts at Pentecost, holy, heavenly love. 2. Love is kind, and suffers long, love is meek, and thinks no wrong, love than death itself more strong; therefore give us love. 3. Prophecy will fade away, melting in the light of day; love will ever with us stay; therefore give us love. 4. Faith will vanish into sight; hope be emptied in delight; love in heaven will shine more bright; therefore give us love. 5. Faith and hope and love we see, joining hand in hand agree; but the greatest of the three, and the best, is love. 6. From the overshadowing, of thy gold and silver wing shed on us, who to thee sing, holy, heavenly love. Please stand and turn to face the Gospel and the Cross... / Ka tu te katoa Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John [chapter 6:1-21] Praise and Glory to God. After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming towards him, Jesus said to Philip, Where are A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 4

5 we to buy bread for these people to eat? He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, Six months wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s brother, said to him, There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost. So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world. When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself. When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, got into a boat, and started across the lake to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The lake became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid. Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land towards which they were going. This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ the Word. There follows the sermon / Te Kauwhau The preacher today is Revd. Ailsa Claridge Please stand for the Affirmation of Faith / Te Whakapono You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. Deacon Let us offer one-another a sign of peace. During the offertory hymn, a collection is taken up for our mission and ministry as the cathedral. Thank you for your gift. 1. Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. 2. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let Thy glorious light, shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. 3. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. 4. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; nor can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes His dwelling. The Preparation of the Gifts / Te Whakatikatika I Te Ohaoha Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have this bread to offer, fruit of the earth and work of human hand, it will become for us the body of Christ. God's Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. Honour and worship are indeed your due, our Lord and our God, through Jesus Christ, for you created all things; by your will they were created, and for your glory they have their being. glory, honour, thanks and praise be given to you, creator of heaven and earth. You made us in your image, creating us male and female. When sin marred that image you healed our brokenness, giving your Son to die for us. Therefore we raise our voices, with all who have served you in every age, to proclaim the glory of your name. Therefore with people of every nation, tribe and language, with the whole Church on earth and in heaven, joyfully we give you thanks and say/sing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the Highest. glory and honour to you, God of grace, for you gave your only Son Jesus Christ once for all on the cross to be the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world, that all who believe in him might have eternal life. The night before he died, he took bread, and when he had given you thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper he took the cup, and when he had given you thanks, he gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my Please take note of your nearest exit. Therefore heavenly Father, in this sacrament of the suffering and death of your Son, we now celebrate the wonder of your grace and proclaim the mystery of our faith : Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come in glory. Redeemer God, rich in mercy, infinite in goodness, we were far off until you brought us near and our hands are empty until you fill them. As we eat this bread and drink this wine, through the power of your Holy Spirit feed us with your heavenly food, renew us in your service, unite us in Christ, and bring us to your everlasting kingdom. O the depths and riches of your wisdom, O God; how unsearchable are your judgments and untraceable your ways. From you, and through you, and for you are all things. To you be the glory for ever. Amen. [silence] The Breaking of the Bread / Ka Whawhati I te Taro The bread we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. Then follows the Blessing / Te Manaakitanga Christ, who has nourished us with himself the living bread, make you one in praise and love, and raise you up at the last day; and the blessing The Recessional Hymn follows the Notices. 1. The Church s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation, by water and the word: from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2. Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth, her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 3. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war she waits the consummation of peace for evermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. 4. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in one, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. The Dismissal / Te Haerenga Atu Please turn towards the open doors. 11 The Weekly letter is from Archdeacon Trevor Dear Parishioners, Great evil and great good do not simply happen out of the blue; both begin in small, barely noticed incidents, whose significance only becomes apparent once the evil or goodness has snowballed. King David had for some reason stayed at home instead of leading his army, when he saw Bathsheba bathing, and from these seemingly little events the sin accumulated. Huge international conflicts can be traced back to a number of small-scale wrongs or misguided attitudes, or an early absence of real communication. Thankfully the same is true of goodness, and today we are celebrating the way that small acts of generosity and love can be blessed and transformed for great, widespread good. As we join in the celebration of the baptisms of Finn and Alice this morning we remember the responsibility put upon all of us, for it takes a village to raise a child, as we welcome them into this community of faith and that we example for them the love of Christ in us, which leads to acts of generosity and love. Blessings, Trevor. For your prayers Our Province: Retired Bishops: Peter Atkins, John Bluck, Thomas Brown, Brian Carrell, David Coles, George Connor, Derek Eaton, Bruce Gilberd, Penny Jamieson, Murray Mills, Bruce Moore, David Moxon, Henry Paltridge, John Paterson, Richard Randerson & Waiohau (Ben) Te Haara, Kelvin Wright.
