Nau mai; haere mai; welcome to Taranaki Cathedral To be as Christ in the Community Hey, young people here today - welcome - especially any visiting our interim cathedral! We have great groups for you to be a part of. Please come and meet us by the sound desk this morning... Cath, family worker :-) Our 10am service commences with this hymn 1. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; with gold of obedience and incense of lowliness, kneel and adore him: the Lord is his name. 2. Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness: high on his heart he will bear it for thee, comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness, guiding thy steps as may best for thee be. 3. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine; truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine. Welcome on 1st July 2018, 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Te Rātapu Tekau mā Toru o he wā noa iho 8am Hymns Offertory: Just as I am, without one plea - Page 4 Recessional: We shall go out with hope of resurrection page 9 4. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear; mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling and hope for our fear. 5. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim; with gold of obedience and incense of lowliness, kneel and adore him: the Lord is his name. I runga i te Ingoa o te Atua, te Matua, te Tama me te Wairua Tapu. Amine. (In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.) Liturgist Grace to you and peace from God our Creator, the love at our beginning and without end, in our midst and with us. God is with us, here we find new life. Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 1
Liturgist Let us give thanks for the coming of God's reign of justice and love. Jesus Christ is good news for the poor, release for the captives, recovery of sight for the blind and liberty for those who are oppressed. The Confession and Absolution / Te Hohou-i-te-rongo Please sit. Liturgist Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, whose wrongs are pardoned. I will confess my sins to the Lord, I will not conceal my wrongdoings. [Silence] Liturgist God forgives and heals us. We need your healing, merciful God: give us true repentance. Some sins are plain to us; some escape us, some we cannot face. Forgive us; set us free to hear your word to us; set us free to serve you. God forgives us; be at peace. Rejoice and be glad, for Christ is resurrection, reconciliation for all the human race. Amen. The Gloria is sung, as a cry of thanksgiving to God. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect Gathering Prayer is said together / Hei konei te inoi o te rä Healing God, you are life and wholeness, transform our brokenness by your life giving love and deepen our faith. Through Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 2
Please be seated for the Readings / Nga Karaipiture E noho Reader A Reading from the second book of Samuel [chapter 1:1,17-27] After the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He ordered that The Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said: Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places! How the mighty have fallen! Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult. You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor bounteous fields! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more. From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, nor the sword of Saul return empty. Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with crimson, in luxury, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan lies slain upon your high places. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished! Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Reader Thanks be to God. A Reading from the second epistle of Paul to the Corinthians [chapter 8:7-15] Now as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 3
need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. At 10am we sing this hymn in preparation for the Gospel 1. Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come. 2. Just as I am, though tossed about, with many a conflict, many a doubt; fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come. 3. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come. 4. Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve: because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come. 5. Just as I am, thy love unknown, has broken every barrier down, now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come. 6. Just as I am, of that free love, the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. Please stand and turn to face the Gospel and the Cross... / Ka tu te katoa Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark [chapter 5:21-43] (Sung at the 10am Service) Praise and Glory to God. When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered round him; and he was by the lake. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live. So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well. Immediately her haemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, Who touched my A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 4
clothes? And his disciples said to him, You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, Who touched me? He looked all round to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease. While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader s house to say, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further? But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, Do not fear, only believe. He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha cum, which means, Little girl, get up! And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. This is the Gospel of Christ. (Sung at the 10am Service) Praise to Christ the Word. There follows the sermon / Te Kauwhau The preacher today is Archdeacon Trevor Please stand for the Affirmation of Faith / Te Whakapono You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved your love for us in Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose again. You are with us now. You are God. You, O God, are Holy Spirit. You empower us to be your gospel in the world. You reconcile and heal; you overcome death. You are our God. We worship you. A Time of Prayer / Nga Inoi a te Iwi Liturgist Let us pray for the church and the world, giving thanks for God's goodness Our intercessions end with The Lord's Prayer/Te Inoi a te Ariki (Sung at 10am) Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 5
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Please stand for the Ministry of the Sacrament / Te Minitatanga o te Hakarameta God is love, and those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. Kia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Atua ki a koutou. The peace of God be with you. And also with you. Deacon Let us offer one-another a sign of peace. During the offertory hymn, a collection is taken up for our mission and ministry as the cathedral. Thank you for your gift. At 8am we sing Just as I am, without one plea on page 4 1. Here, Lord, we take the broken bread and drink the wine, believing that by your life our souls are fed, your parting gifts receiving. 2. As you have giv n, so we would give ourselves for others healing; as you have lived, so we would live, the Father s love revealing. [Sing twice] The Preparation of the Gifts / Te Whakatikatika I Te Ohaoha To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty; all that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you. The Great Thanksgiving / Te Whakawhetai Nui The Lord is here. God's Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. It is the joy of our salvation, God of the universe, to give you A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 6
thanks through Jesus Christ. You said, Let there be light ; there was light. Your light shines on in our darkness. For you the earth has brought forth life in all its forms. You have created us to hear your Word, to do your will and to be fulfilled in your love. It is right to thank you. You sent your Son to be for us the way we need to follow and the truth we need to know. You sent your Son to give his life to release us from our sin. His cross has taken our guilt away. You send your Holy Spirit to strengthen and to guide, to warn and to revive your Church. Therefore, with all your witnesses who surround us on every side, countless as heaven s stars, we praise you for our creation and our calling, with loving and with joyful hearts: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed are you, most holy, in your Son, who washed his disciples feet. I am among you, he said, as one who serves. On that night before he died he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper, he took the cup, and gave you thanks. He gave it to them and said: Drink this. It is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you, shed for all, to forgive sin; do this to remember me. Therefore with this bread and wine we recall your goodness to us. God of the past and present, we your people remember your Son. We thank you for his cross and rising again, we take courage from his ascension; we look for his coming in glory and in him we give ourselves to you. Send your Holy Spirit, that we who receive Christ s body may indeed be the body of Christ, and we who share his cup draw strength from the one true vine. Called to follow Christ, help us to reconcile and unite. Called to suffer, give us hope in our calling. For you, the heavenly one, make all things new; you are the beginning and the end, the last and the first. Praise, glory and love be yours, this and every day, from us and all people, here and everywhere. Amen. [silence] Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 7
The Breaking of the Bread / Ka Whawhati I te Taro The bread we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. The cup of blessing for which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ. The Agnus Dei. Please sit for this quiet prayer (sung at 10am) Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us your peace. We are invited to share communion / Te Powhiri Bread and wine; the gifts of God for the people of God. May we who share these gifts be found in Christ and Christ in us. God invites everyone to gather around His table. We extend an invitation to everyone to come forward and receive this Holy Sacrament / Hakari Tapu or a blessing. Our sidespeople will guide you to a distribution point. After Communion this prayer / Nga Inoi mo Muri I te Hapa Almighty God, giver of all good things, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the precious body and blood of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. We thank you for your love and care in assuring us of your gift of eternal life and uniting us with the blessed company of all faithful people. Therefore, everliving God, keep us steadfast in your holy fellowship. And now we offer ourselves, all that we have and are, to serve you faithfully in the world, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Then follows the Blessing / Te Manaakitanga May God keep you in all your days. May Christ shield you in all your ways. May the Spirit bring you healing and peace. May God the Holy Trinity drive all darkness from you and pour upon you blessing and light. Amen. A member of the Community of the Cross of Nails Page 8
The Recessional Hymn follows the Notices. 1. We shall go out with hope of resurrection; we shall go out, from strength to strength go on; we shall go out and tell our stories boldly; tales of a love that will not let us go. We ll sing our songs of wrongs that can be righted; we ll dream our dream of hurts that can be healed; we ll weave a cloth of all the world united within the vision of new life who sets us free. 2. We ll give a voice to those who have not spoken; we ll find the words for those whose lips are sealed; we ll make the tunes for those who sing no longer, expressive love alive in every heart. We ll share our joy with those who are still weeping, raise hymns of strength for hearts that break in grief, we ll leap and dance the resurrection story including all in circles of our love. The Dismissal / Te Haerenga Atu Please turn towards the open doors. Deacon Haere i runga i te rangimarie i runga i te aroha me te ngakau hihiko ki te mahi ki te ariki. 11 The Weekly letter is from Archdeacon Trevor Dear Parishioners, Stony limits cannot keep love out, Romeo declared to Juliet in that famous balcony scene. We might paraphrase that to read human limits cannot keep God s love out. As human beings we want to put boundaries around things, we put up walls and barriers. Yet God seeks to break those down, to invite us into community, a place of forgiveness and togetherness and wholeness. Today s Gospel tells us of a healing and a resurrection, which are examples of God s desire for wholeness and togetherness. The question we must ask of ourselves is whether we are putting up boundaries around things, or walls and barriers that prevent us being in community, that place of forgiveness and togetherness and wholeness. Do we own our possessions or do they own us? Are our possessions things that enable us to reach out or are they things that absorb our time and energy and money and are barriers to community? Are our relationships all-consuming and all-absorbing or do they strengthen us and empower us to reach out? Can we forgive, both others and ourselves, as we are forgiven, so that the wrongs in our lives, done by us or to us, cannot take on a destructiveness in and of our lives? Let us not keep God s love out. Blessings, Trevor. Community Café Update For the past 6 weeks the cafe has been supporting ISGF (International Scout and Guide Fellowship) as they raise funds to provide shelters (built with traditional methods and superior to the emergency plastic tents which the UNHCR provides) for a thousand South-Sudanese families who have fled to Uganda. Their efforts are focused on the Imvepi refugee settlement in Northern Uganda, currently the world's largest refugee settlement. Welcome to our Interim Cathedral in the Peace Hall Page 11
