2 ST. PIUS V CHURCH PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND "At that time the Lord appointed 72 others whom he sent ahead of him..." (Lk 10:1) Dear brothers and sisters, When I signed up for the mission appeal at St. Pius, I had no idea that it would turn out to be my mother s Month s Mind Mass. Why should I be surprised: we live in Providence which is so much more than a city. I originally signed up because I wanted to share with you, and ask your spiritual and material support for one of my most important pastoral responsibilities: our mission in Kenya. Our province consists of 18 parishes, campus ministries and communities stateside and three in Kenya: two in Nairobi, the capital city, and one in Kisumu on Lake Victoria (check out our website: eafricadominicans.org). At the present time, we have 26 friars who serve in Kenya: three are friars from the States, 15 are Dominican friars from Kenya (like Fr. Thomas in the picture) and eight are student brothers preparing for priesthood. In Nairobi we have one parish and one seminary house. Our novitiate (where Dominicans spend their first year learning the life like St. Gertrude s) is in Kisumu. I have had the opportunity to visit our Kenyan mission twice, and I will be going back again in this coming year. These visits have provided the opportunity for me to observe Dominican life and mission continuing to grow in a context so different from 55 Elmhurst Ave. One of the reasons I wanted to be a Dominican, and not a diocesan priest was to be part of a worldwide community (as much as I love Rhode Island!). On my last visit, in October of 14, I received the devastating news that Pam Lemoi, a member of our parish and a former kindergarten teacher in our school, had died of cancer. I was saying Mass in a Catholic elementary school that day. (I told the students of Pam and asked them to pray for her.) Fr. Gideon, who was concelebrating with me, spoke her name in the Eucharistic prayer. It was a beautiful example of the universal church to which we belong: Providence and Nairobi united, one bread, one body in Christ. This weekend s mission appeal continues that unity. Your financial support assists our friars in their preaching, teaching and parish work. I need your prayers as provincial that God will raise up a few more US friars to assist our brothers as they grow into an independent province. ( The harvest is abundant, the laborers are few. Lk 10:2) Most importantly, may we all realize that whether it s Providence or Nairobi, we are all among the 72 sent by the master of the harvest...to every town and place he intended to visit. In Jesus, Fr. Ken Fr. Ken & Fr. Odhiambro THE WEEK AHEAD Young Adult Ministry: Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. Please contact us at: info@spvya.com or visit our web site at: Legion of Mary: Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. in the rectory (lower level). Second Sunday Sisters: Sunday, July 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the church hall. We are continuing our study of The Holy Year of Mercy with Chapter 5, Compassion: The Touch of Mercy, followed by intentions and fellowship. All women are welcome. Fr. Ken with school children at the Pam Lemoi Mass in Nairobi. ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER? Signing up for e-giving with Faith Direct, does not automatically make you a registered parishioner of St. Pius. You need to call the parish office to formally register. If you are not using Faith Direct and not receiving budget envelopes, chances are you are not registered. If you are a school parent and wish to receive parishioner tuition rates, you must be registered and either contributing through e-giving or offertory budget envelopes. If you have any questions or concerns, please call Joanna at the church office at , Ext. 103.

Independence Day Prayer Dear Lord, There is no greater feeling of liberation than to experience this freedom from sin and death that you have provided for me through Jesus Christ. Today my heart and my soul are free to praise you. For this, I am very thankful. On this Independence Day, I am reminded of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that a very high price was paid for my freedom. My freedom cost others their very lives. Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families. Dear Father, I am so thankful for this nation. For all the sacrifices others have made to build and defend this country, I am grateful.
