3 Page 3 Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015 For the last five years, our weekday Masses have been at 7:00 am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Except during the Lenten season, the attendance at our weekday Masses has ranged from people. Over the past two years, there have been many requests to schedule our weekday morning Masses at a later time. I have brought this issue to our Parish Pastoral Council and they have made recommendations. I am grateful for their input. Prior to making a decision, I need to hear from you to ensure that whatever decision is reached will best serve this faith community. I would appreciate it if you would complete the following survey: 1) I will attend if our weekday Masses are at 8:15 am. 4 Page 4 Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015 LAMP SoCal In its first year, LAMP So Cal (Liturgical Arts Ministry Project) is a residential summer camp for high school teens, taking place June 29 July 3, 2015 at Mt. St. Mary s University in Los Angeles. The camp is designed to form and mentor young people with an interest in liturgical ministry in their parish or school. Our youth will be tomorrow s (and in many cases today s) musicians, artists, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, sacristans and more, and now is the time to help educate, foster and cultivate that growth. With LAMP So Cal, young people will be formed for liturgy and their intercultural competency to understand the worship needs of the multicultural communities will be built. We re offering partial scholarships on an as-needed basis. 5 Page 5 Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015 Reflecting on God s Word These days most corporations and churches have vision and mission statements. Often they begin with a model vision that the institution strives to live up to. They go on to state what the institution seeks to do how it puts its vision into practice. A parish vision and mission statement might say: We are the Body of Christ. Utilizing the gifts of each member, we collaborate to bring more and more people into God s kingdom of freedom, justice, holiness, and love. On this feast we are given the ultimate vision and mission statement for the Church. It goes something like this: Christ is now working with and for us at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19). Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are to be Christ s witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). We seek to do so by proclaiming the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15) and building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God (Ephesians 4:12 13). You may have noticed that our St Maximilian Kolbe and St Francis statues are missing! Not to worry, they have been transported to a restoration studio for care and maintenance. They have suffered accelerated degradation due to our proximity to the coast. This major restoration involves deep-cleaning, sand-blasting and repatina by some of the same artisans that care for the bronze sculptures at prominent Southern California museums. Combined with an annual maintence schedule, we can look forward to enjoying these beautiful fixtures for decades to come. Thank you for your understanding and patience. As I rounded the corner, a woman in a car looked out the window and with a big smile, waved to me, as she enjoyed the bright sun-filled day after a long winter.

7 Page 7 Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015 A joyful heart Spring reminds us of God's goodness Father Robert J. Hater Winter in the Midwest was brutally cold this year, with record snows and ice. The temperature was below zero with six inches of snow just a week earlier. It was a relief when I could walk around the neighborhood. Usually, nature first comes alive when the trees and flowers blossom in early spring. Today I saw another kind of life being born, one that springs from the heart of every person. As I began my walk down the road, four teenage boys passed me on the other side. They smiled and laughed, reminiscent of years ago, when my friends and I walked around our neighborhood. As I rounded the corner, a woman in a car looked out the window and with a big smile, waved to me, as she enjoyed the bright sun-filled day after a long winter. Next, I saw two small girls wearing bright Easter-like long dresses. They joyfully smiled and romped on their porch. As I walked past, they saw my straw cowboy hat and yelled out, Hi, cowboy. Immediately, they went in the front door, and told their mother that a cowboy was walking down the street. Finally, as I returned home, two teenage girls laughed and smiled as they walked up to the corner. I didn t know these people, but sensed that an inner spirit was released in them which told me that life is good and we are God s precious treasures. I sensed in them the spirit of the all-good God who dwells in us. In spite of our sorrow and stress, the Holy Spirit invites us to express our gratitude to God. Let us give thanks for who we are by opening our hearts to see the beauty around us. A priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and a Professor of Pastoral and Systematic Theology at the Athenaeum of Ohio, Father Bob Hater is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Dayton. To the Parents of Our Young Children A Few Suggestions... UURelax! God put the wiggle in children. Don't feel you have to suppress it in God's house. All are welcome. UUSit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what's going on at the altar. They tire of seeing the backs of other's heads. UUQuietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, altar servers, choir, Eucharistic ministers, and others UUSing the hymns pray and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. UUIf you have to leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, "Let the children come to me." UURemember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship. UUThere are children's bulletins available to let your child to draw and doodle. Please ask an usher for one! To Our Parishioners UUThe presence of children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder that our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give a big smile of encouragement to their parents.
