3 Page 3 3rd Sunday in Lent March 8, 2015 Stations of the Cross each Friday in Lent, 7:00 pm soup will NOT be served Fri, March 13 Lenten Reconciliation Service Tuesday, March 24, 7:00 pm There is no feeling quite like hearing, "I absolve you." Come experience God's mercy. Hebrew Scriptures: Preferential Option for the Poor God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 1 Corinthians 1:27 NLT In all honesty, once it was on top and fully part of the establishment, the Church was a bit embarrassed by the powerless one, Jesus. We had to make his obvious defeat into a glorious victory that had nothing to do with defeat his or ours. Let's face it, we feel more comfortable with power than with powerlessness. Who wants to be like Jesus on the cross, the very icon of powerlessness? It just doesn't look like a way of influence, a way of access, a way that's going to make any difference in the world. We are such a strange religion! We worship this naked, bleeding loser, crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem, but we always want to be winners, powerful, and on top ourselves...at least until we learn to love the little things and the so-called little people, and then we often see they are not little at all, but better images of the soul. Yes, those with mental and physical disabilities, minority groups, refugees, the addicted, the homosexual, the prisoner anybody who's failed in our nicely constructed social or economic success system can be our best teachers in the ways of the Gospel. They represent what we are most afraid of within ourselves, what we most deny within ourselves. That's why we must learn to love our "enemy"; we absolutely must or we will never know how to love our own soul, or the soul of anything. Please think about that until it makes sense to you. It eventually will, by the grace of God. One of the most transformative experiences is entering into some form of lifestyle solidarity with the powerless. It's like changing sides from the ego side of things, and this is what changes you. We don't think ourselves into a new way of living; we live ourselves into a new way of thinking. It is lifestyle choices that convert people. I am not aware that merely believing a doctrine or dogma has ever converted anybody. That should be obvious by now. Someone once pointed out to me that most of the great founders of communities, including Francis of Assisi, Mother Katherine Drexel, Vincent de Paul, Benedict, John Baptist de la Salle, and Mother Seton all started out as what we would now call middle class or even upper class. They first had enough comfort and security and leisure to move beyond their need for more comfort and security and leisure (because they saw it did not satisfy or feed the soul). Each in their own way changed sides and worked in solidarity with those who did not have their advantages. When the Right moves toward the Left, while including what they learned on the Right, we often have the best of both worlds. We are now seeing this also in Pope Francis. 4 Page 4 3rd Sunday in Lent March 8, 2015 THIRD AGE ST PATRICK'S CELEBRATION This month, the "Third Age" will meet on Tuesday, March 17th, to have a St. Patrick's Day Luncheon in Room C of the Hall. The meeting will start at Noon. Our luncheon will be catered and will include corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, salad, rolls, dessert, and drinks for $10 per person. The RSVP is very important this month so that we can order the correct amount of food for everyone to enjoy. Please call Diane Zimmerman at and leave a message with your name. Wear your green, come eat, listen to Irish music, and have great food with your good friends. Remember: everyone is a little bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day! ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING CONSULTATION OF THE CLERGY AND FAITHFUL FOR THE 2015 SYNOD OF BISHOPS In preparation for the Synod of Bishops to be held October 4 25, 2015 on The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World, the Vatican has asked the world s bishops for a broad consultation. In order to facilitate the response from the Archdiocese, we have established an on-line survey that enables Catholics to respond to a set of questions that the Vatican has proposed for reflection. The survey can be accessed on our home page: or directly at or by visiting our parish website: Pastors, academic leaders, leaders of Catholic agencies and organizations, leaders of religious congregations and lay movements and ecclesial associations, are asked to distribute this consultation as widely as possible. Individual as well as organized group responses are acceptable responses to this consultation. Responses are to be made by Monday, March 9 in order to be included in the report that the Archdiocese will present to the United States Catholic Conference.

5 Page 5 3rd Sunday in Lent March 8, 2015 Reflecting on God s Word All of us wish we could be holy, we say, if only Jesus would come and do to the temple of our faith what he did to the temple of Israel s faith: cast out what doesn t belong, because we don t seem to be able to do it for ourselves, at least not with much effectiveness. We try to pray and find ourselves daydreaming about what to make for supper, about the latest family argument, about the meeting we re going to attend, about where we re going to spend our money. We try to simplify, but we also like our lives the way they are. We like the cut of style, the thick of our lawn, the escape of vacation, the high from shopping or chocolate or daytime soaps or whatever catches our fancy. We wish we would love better, care better, have more compassion or patience, be more generous, but original sin always gets in the way only we don t call it original sin. We say we don t have willpower or the energy. So what are we to do? John s Gospel promises that God will come and drive such stuff from our lives. In fact, the promise is that God will do it whether we wish God to or not, which is probably a good move on God s part simply because most of us are a bit fearful of what God may clear away.. Rev. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this world. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist the truest of foods. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments) for the reception of grace. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites. 6 Page 6 3rd Sunday in Lent March 8, 2015 These Winter Sundays Dads, pass on the faith this Lent by Cory Busse In his poem Those Winter Sundays, Robert Hayden writes about how he failed to appreciate the hard work his father did day in and day out an expression of his father s love for his family. Hayden finishes the poem with the line, What did I know, what did I know / of love s austere and lonely offices? Lent is a time for us to grow and to learn. And for those of us who are fathers (or father figures), to teach our children about our Catholic faith. Prayer A lot of dads I know struggle with prayer. Praying especially in front of our kids makes us self-conscious. We re too locked into stereotypical (aka traditional) roles of breadwinner and disciplinarian and Dad (with a capital D ). Prayers of thanksgiving make it seem like we had nothing to do with the blessings we have. If it s a petition, then it s helpless and shows weakness. And don t even get me started on acts of contrition. The truth is, though, that kids learn a lot from seeing their dads pray. They learn that it s important to thank God for our blessings, that it s OK to ask for help, and that saying we re sorry is universal. If we teach them by example, we can show them that prayer is a lot more than reciting words in a monotone voice. This Lenten season, pray with your kids. At Mass, really concentrate on what you re saying during the Profession of Faith, the Creed and the Lord s Prayer. Say them as though they are part of an ongoing conversation with your Father, and encourage your children to do likewise. Fasting Fasting during Lent is a difficult thing for children to grasp. In a society of instant gratification, forgoing a meal or even meat on a Friday seems old-fashioned. Overt displays of religious custom raise eyebrows, especially if they don t square with social mores or jibe with peer pressure. If we don t equip our kids first, they re going to forget, intentionally blow it off or feel like they have to lie to fit in. Equipping them first means teaching them why we Are You Being Called To Become A Deacon? Diaconate Formation Office: Information Meeting for Men Interested in the Permanent Diaconate Sunday, April 12, 2015 The Diaconate Formation Office will be hosting an information meeting for all men who are interested in finding out more about becoming a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Members of the Archdiocesan Diaconate Formation Office will be present to explain the role of the deacon in the Church, to explain the Diaconate Formation Program, and to answer any questions that participants might have. Men must be between the ages of 30 and 60 years to enter the formation program. It is important for men who are married to attend with their wives. The next information meeting will be held on Sunday April 12, 2015 from 2:00 4:00 pm, here at St. Maximilian Kolbe. For further information, please contact Mrs. Claudia Ortiz in the Diaconate Formation Office at or at: CAOrtiz@la-archidiocese.org If you want to be first make yourself servant of all. Matthew 20:27 fast during Lent; setting our minds on God and taking an intentional approach to what we consume form the basis for this tradition. The second part is helping them follow through. Recognize that they re going to complain about it. Don t get frustrated; use it as an opportunity to remind them that they are in solidarity with a great many people who go without every day, and that experiences like these bring us closer to God. Almsgiving My dad has been a contributor to Boys Town over the years. For as long as I can remember, he has been asking us to give to this charity rather than to give him gifts at birthdays and Christmas. And for the life of me, I can t tell you why. Except for a handful of years in the Air Force, Dad spent his entire life in a quiet suburb in Minnesota. To the best of my knowledge, he has never known or been close to an at-risk youth. Still, it is a given that a contribution to Boys Town is an acceptable gift for any occasion. He doesn t make a show of it; he just gives. And his children and his grandchildren know he gives. And even though we don t know exactly why, we know it s important. So we give, too.

8 Page 8 3rd Sunday in Lent March 8, 2015 IT S TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THE 2015 ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE BREAK BREAD DINNER GROUPS WHAT: We invite you to sign up for our parish Break Bread dinners. The purpose of these dinners is purely social. Come and meet new people in our church community by sharing four dinners this year. There are many different groups of people who form our parish, and this is a chance to widen your circle of friends. HOW: The person who agrees to host the first dinner will call you to set a date, time, and location, the formality of the occasion and whether children are also invited. You will be asked to bring a dish: hor d'ouevers, salad, or dessert. The host will choose the menu and provide the main dish. Guests contribute the rest of the meal, the warmth, and the fellowship. At the conclusion of the evening, the group should schedule the next date for the dinner group to meet. WHY: This is a great social and community building opportunity to enjoy good food and make friends. Kolbe's Korner Preschool Registration for fall classes at Kolbe's Korner Preschool is ongoing. We have classes for 3, 4 and 5 year olds, and have 2-day, 3-day, and 5-day programs available. Please contact the preschool office at for more information or download registration forms at stmaxchurch.org ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS Any adult who works with children in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles must be fingerprinted and attend a Virtus child abuse awareness class. Information on child safety is located in the breezeway. Parents: for your children s safety, please accompany them to the restrooms during Mass. Protecting Our Children Did You Know? Teaching children about boundaries and safe touches is healthy Teaching children about boundaries and safe touches is not sex education. There are many safety issues we teach children: bike safety, water safety, fire prevention, driver's training, etc. Personal safety programs should have age appropriate lessons that give children the skills they need to protect themselves without frightening them. Keeping children unaware of the dangers around them does not keep them safe. Predators count on children not knowing what to do.
