3 Page 3 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 21, 2014 As Christmas approaches, it is with gratitude that I thank each of you and your families for the many ways that you make our parish community so loving, welcoming, and life-giving for so many. Your constant dedication to helping those in need is truly an inspiration. I pray that our Christmas masses will renew us and inspire others". I am confident that you, your family and friends will experience the magic of our Catholic spirituality through music here at St. Max. All of our Christmas liturgies are listed on the back cover. May the Christ child bless all of us with happiness and health this Christmas and throughout the New Year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Rev. Jarlath Dolan Pastor DISCOVERING THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS by Lorene Hanley Duquin The secular idea of Christmas is all about what gifts you will get. But if you ve ever experienced feelings of disappointment or emptiness on the day after Christmas, you already know that the happiness you may feel when you open a present is never lasting. Happiness is fleeting. Real joy is hidden in the depths of you. The source of real joy is the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit in your soul. You experience it as a warm inner feeling of peace and contentment that can sustain you even when things are not going well in your life. You can feel worried, sad or stressed, but it is still possible to tap into your inner joy. The secret to discovering the real joy, especially at Christmas time, is to take a moment to think about the gift of the Babe in Bethlehem. Close your eyes and imagine that you are holding the Christ Child. Let hidden feelings of peace and joy emerge. Don t be surprised if your encounter with the Christ Child makes you want to do something to help someone else. The best way to sustain feelings of joy is to share what God has given to you. Think about all of the good things in your life. Topping the list may be your family member and friends. Telling the people you love how much you care about them is a great way to stir up feelings of joy. But God has also gifted you in other ways. Sharing your gifts and talents with others always brings joy. Here are some ideas: Clean out closets and toy bins. Donate gently-used items to local outreach centers. Buy a Christmas gift for a needy child. Donate money to a worthwhile charity. Bring food to your parish food pantry. Visit friends or relatives in a nursing home. Bake cookies for a homebound neighbor. You can probably think of other ways to bring the spirit of Christmas joy into your life. Just keep in mind that the more you give of yourself this Christmas, the more you will experience the true joy of the season.

5 Page 5 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 21, 2014 Reflecting on God s Word In today s first reading King David is settled in his cedar palace, no upcoming battles on the horizon, feeling quite content, glass of wine in hand, chatting with Nathan the prophet about how good life is, when he gets this inspiration: God should have a house! Certainly more than that old tent we have been dragging around. And I will build it! Nathan approves. But that night, God weighs in: Tell David, Thanks, but no thanks. I like the tent. We don t know why God said no to David. But it seems that God wanted to make clear not only who was building God s dwelling place but also who really was in charge of everything. God was the kingdom builder and God chose to work with very simple material, like a tent. But this was nothing compared to God s decision a millennium later, on the day when the angel Gabriel was sent to a town of Galilee called Nazareth. God s plan from the beginning was to take up residence among us closer than any building could be, whether it was as magnificent as Solomon s temple or as humble as the simplest parish church. What God intended was to dwell with us as one of us, taking on human flesh and blood. And in the fullness of time God came asking if one of us would be willing. We don t know how long it took for Mary to answer. We only remember the important thing: she said yes. James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. Copyright 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. 6 Page 6 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 21, 2014 Scrooge was introduced to the Spirit of Christmas Past. But that was just a literary ploy. There is no Christmas past: Christmas is ongoing. It is happening right now. Of course, we can remember Christmases that we celebrated in past years, but that is just a memory thing. Christmas is about God becoming human, and God has no past. Everything happens to God all at once, in the present. But when Christmas happens is not as important as what happens. The infinite God enters our atmosphere, the mysterious God becomes an open secret, the immortal God becomes mortal, the spiritual God becomes fleshy, meaty, God con carne. Now, to appreciate the depth of Christmas, we must appease the new thing that happens at Christmas. God and human are not simply joined together like pieces of wood and plastic. God is not molded into human form as iron is forged into a horseshoe. God does not put on a human body the way we put on pajamas. God really, actually becomes a specific, individual human being And when God becomes human, it is not only the human that is changed. Something also happens to God. Imagine yourself becoming your dog. The dog s life is certainly changed. The dog can now speak English and mention which brand of dog food he likes. But you have also changed: You now live a dog s life. Really. You lap water out of a bowl, scratch fleas, bark and chase your tail. In a similar way, God now laughs and cries, works and plays, loves and hates. God is henceforth and forever subject to mood swings, success and failure, stroke and PMS. If this sounds extreme, very unlikely and radically un-divine, then consider the alternative. Either God becomes totally human or Jesus is no more than God in a Brooks Brothers suit. And what would be the point of that? But what would be the point of God becoming human? Why would God want to mix his pure spirit with messy matter? Why would God want to disturb her heavenly serenity with earthly squabbles? Why would God want to limit his infinite freedom with finite choices? Why would God want to muddle her divine wisdom with human ignorance? Why would God want to mingle his divine comedy with all kinds of human tragedies? Why would God want to risk her assured future bliss with human Every Day is Christmas The incarnation of God is ongoing by James Smith uncertain fate? No reason. Except that God loves humans. And humans do all kinds of things for the ones we love. We hug and kiss and pinch and dance and probe and maul. Love is messy, but we insist on being as physically close as humanly possible to those we love. But there s more. We also want to think and feel as they do, yearn for and work for what they want, reject and deny anything offensive to them. We want them to be like us and us to be like them. We want to be one with them. God has those same strange tendencies. It is no fun being a know-it-all if nobody understands you. It is embarrassing to live in perfect bliss while your creatures exist in misery. What is the point in being everywhere all at once if your people are stuck in the airport? And how can you experience the joy of love if there is no one to love? In the end, it was an easy choice for God to decide to become human. Now he has the best of both worlds. And the worst she can stand, because she is still God. Nobody can take that away from him. Whatever Jesus does is what God does. Everything that Jesus says is from God s mouth to our ears. Every pain that Jesus endures bruises the heart of God. If not, then God should have left us alone. But there is more. God made every single thing from the same primary matter. Different things are simply the same basic thing in different forms. Everything is essentially connected at the core of creation. The birth of a baby and the birth of a star both burst from the same creative artistry of God. The desire of a saint and the instinct of an animal meet in the love of God. Past, present and future converge in the eternity of God. Yes, Jesus was born in a certain place at a specific time: he was a unique combination of matter and spirit. But since matter is interchangeable, his body is physically connected with every particle of matter in the cosmos. And since nothing leaves the universe, we breathe the same air he breathed, experience the same things he experienced, live the same life he lived. The same life he is still living. The incarnation of God, the enfleshment of God, the materialization of God, the humanization of God is ongoing. Every day is Christmas. Fr. James Smith is the pastor of St. Matthias Church in Columbus, Ohio.

7 Page 7 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 21, 2014 WHAT REALLY MATTERS... by Cathy Donovan We have a wonderful tradition in my family of gathering at my parents home for Christmas Eve. They still live in the home where I grew up. That home is bursting with memories, stories and more than a few tall tales. I am one of nine children, all of us married, except one brother that passed away some years ago. Among us there are 26 grandchildren. And on any given Christmas Eve there is at least one, two or more who join our celebration because they don t have a place to go. My children have known this tradition all of their lives. It is a long day filled with cousins, games, lots of food and a visit from Santa. As the fire crackles and the snow glistens in the moonlight, we gather in the living room, children clustered on the floor as my dad reads the story of the Nativity. It is, hands down, my favorite day of the year. About five years ago, my dad was quite ill around Christmas and ended up in the hospital. He was going to miss Christmas. Our Advent was filled with conversations about what we were going to do. We talked about waiting to celebrate until Dad was better. We talked about having it at my sister s home. We talked about taking shifts at the hospital so everyone would get to spend some time with my parents over the holiday. All of us were saddened by the thought of the absence of the most important man in our family: Papa. I remember my husband and I talking with our children, all on the edge of their teens, about Papa s illness, and that he would be in the hospital over Christmas. Their response melted my heart. Cole said, Why don t we wait and have Christmas when Papa is better? Yeah, cause who would read the story? It just wouldn t feel right, added Aidan. I ll go sit with Papa at the hospital on Christmas Eve so Mima and Papa aren t alone if that would help, offered Maddie. Then Zoa summed up what we were all feeling when she said, This just doesn t feel like Christmas. In the end, it was my dad who decided. He wanted us to gather as usual. He was tired and could use the rest, and my mom could use the company and a break from the hospital. And that is what we did. It wasn t the same, but it was good to be together. My dad got better, thankfully, and we have celebrated several Christmas Eves since. As a parent I often wonder if I have done enough to teach my children the truly important things in life: family, faith, kindness, love. That Christmas I got the gift of knowing the answer to that question. And my children got the gift of finding the true meaning of Christmas. LOVE is God s gift to us at Christmas and always.

Protecting Our Children Did You Know? Tips for choosing safe toys for kids Millions of toys are out there, and hundreds of new ones hit the stores each year. Toys are supposed to be fun and are an important part of any child's development. But each year, scores of kids are treated in hospital emergency departments for toy-related injuries. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toy-shopping: Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable. Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint. Art materials should say nontoxic. Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
