Welcome to the TRINITARIAN CONGREGATIONAL PARISH OF CASTINE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Castine, Maine July 24, 2016
Order of Worship TRINITARIAN CONGREGATIONAL PARISH OF CASTINE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Castine, Maine Proper 12 July 24, :30 am Pastor: Rev. Tim Hall Church Musician: Paul Dickson Deacon: Dianne Yates Lector: Carol Clouse Ministers: All Members GATHERING AS A COMMUNITY OF FAITH We welcome you to worship in this special place, and hope that you feel free to greet your friends and neighbors as you arrive. Please let the playing of the organ prelude signal a settling time of quiet and meditation as we prepare ourselves for the Word of God. PRELUDE 'Andante' from Manfred 'Meditation' from Thais GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS INTERLUDE/ACOLYTE C. Reinecke J. Massanet *CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively) O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, those he redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Let those who are wise give heed to these things, and consider the steadfast love of the LORD. Psalm 107:1 3, 43 2
*OPENING HYMN Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven P 16 *PRAYER OF INVOCATION (Unison) We come before you, O God, and wait once again for the kindling flame of your Holy Spirit, calling us to fuller and richer lives. You have blessed us with restful sleep and the morning light. Bless us again, we pray, with the presence of your spirit in our midst. Open us to your claim on us. Show us your way. Let us always live in the light and the truth of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. A TIME WITH ALL GOD S CHILDREN PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison) Almighty and most merciful God, God our Creator, Redeemer, and Keeper, we have been created to reflect your image, but we have spoiled the perfection of your model. In failing to love you fully, in failing to love ourselves in our human frailness, and in failing to help each other as we might, we have sinned against you. We acknowledge our shortcomings and brokenness, and come before you now to confess our sinfulness and ask your forgiveness. A moment for silent prayer ASSURANCE OF PARDON *GLORIA PATRI (Unison) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Hebrew Scriptures HEARING THE WORD Hosea 1:2-10 N 858 R 776 3
Psalm Psalm 85 Insert Epistle Colossians 2:6-19 N 192 nt R 1027 Congregational Response Seek Ye First Matthew 6:33 Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you - Allelu, alleluia! Gospel Luke 11:1-13 N 68 nt R 903 *HYMN O Master, Let Me Walk With Thee P 418 SERMON Shaped by Prayer Rev. Tim Hall THE OFFERING OF OUR GIFTS INVITATION TO OFFERING Offertory He Leadeth Me A. Jordan *Doxology (Unison) Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, you heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication (Unison) Accept these gifts, we pray, O God. Grant that they may be symbols of our love for you. Use these gifts and us, according to your will, for the glorious coming of your kingdom here on earth. Through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 4
THE CHURCH AT PRAYER Celebrations & Concerns Pastoral Prayer Silent Prayer Lord s Prayer (Unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. GOING FORTH INTO THE WORLD *CLOSING HYMN In Christ There Is No East or West P 414 *BENEDICTION *TRIBUTE Eternal Father, Strong to Save (vs. 1 only) P 429 Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep, O hear us when we cry to thee, For those in peril on the sea. POSTLUDE Sinfonia Please remain seated to enjoy the Postlude. 5 J. S. Bach
Notes: (NC) New Century Hymnal (black) (P) Pilgrim Hymnal (blue) (R) Pew Bible, Revised Standard Version (N) Pew Bible, New Revised Standard Version *All who are able, please stand Psalm 85 1 LORD, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. 2 You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin. 3 You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your hot anger. 4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us. 5 Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger to all generations? 6 Will you not revive us again, so that your people may rejoice in you? 7 Show us your steadfast love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation. 8 Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. 9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. 10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. 12 The LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. 13 Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps. 6
Announcements Church Council Meeting There will be a meeting of the full Church Council this coming Tuesday, July 26, at 4:15 pm in the church vestry. This important meeting will cover several issues important for the Annual Meeting in August. Ministry of Feeding Hunger knows no season, and despite the warm weather and relaxing times, our ministry of feeding continues. And so we ask that when you head to the market for groceries and such, please consider shopping for a few extra items of non-perishable foods for those who live with the very real stress of food insecurity. Then drop by the church or Emerson Hall, and with a prayer of hope, drop those items into our collection baskets. Each month we distribute the food and personal items we collect to food pantries in Blue Hill and Orland. With your love, you can make a difference in the lives of local families. Thank you for your prayerful support of our efforts to end hunger, one meal at a time. On the Prayer List In the work of our church, we continue to pray for the sick and afflicted in our congregation and throughout our community: Lloyd Snapp, Monte Nitzkowski, Cyndy Willis, Mimi Dickson. 7
Be sure to check out our Continuing Prayers list in the church vestry for the names of friends and members needing long-term care, prayer, and support.
