3 Each year the University donates the Offering given on Remembrance Sunday to Erskine Hospital. In , was given to support the work of Erskine Hospital in rebuilding shattered lives, restoring dignity and providing first class care to ex-service men and women both young and old. To that sum Gift Aid can add at least 22% to the value of donations. Please put your donation in the envelope provided and remember to complete the Gift Aid Declaration. It would be helpful if this could be done prior to the start of the Service. The envelopes will be uplifted during the hymn O God, our help in ages past. You can also use the envelope for your offering if you do not wish to sign the Gift Aid Declaration. Those attending the Service of Remembrance are requested to ensure that all mobile phones and any other items of electronic equipment are switched OFF (not left in silent mode ) before the Service commences.

5 GLASGOW UNIVERSITY MEMORIAL CHAPEL Worship has been part of the life of the University from its beginning in the crypt of Glasgow Cathedral. Blackfriars Church was used for many years, but for most of the time from 1764 services were held in the College Hall, and after the move to Gilmorehill in the Bute Hall, until the Chapel was built. More than 300 Services will be held in the academic year reflecting the diverse range of religion and belief in the University. These contribute to the University s reputation as an inclusive place of welcome and belonging for students and staff from the United Kingdom and across the globe The Chapel of the University of Glasgow was built as a Memorial following the First World War. The Chapel was dedicated on October 4th 1929 to the Glory of God in memory of the 761 sons and 1 daughter of the University whose lives were lost in that war and contains their names on the tablets behind the Communion Table at the East end. Other tablets on the walls immediately to the East of the stalls contain the names of the 405 members of the University who are known to have given their lives in the war of The design of the Chapel, which was the work of Sir John Burnet, is an original and personal treatment of mediaeval motifs. The general proportions were inspired by French models. The detail is largely based on 13th century English Gothic but, in its more robust character, shows the influence also of the Gothic architecture of Scotland. The crests above the stalls contain details from the coats of arms of the Chancellors of the University since its foundation in Most of the windows were designed and made by Douglas Strachan who has described his work as an attempt to figure the whole of human life as a spiritual enterprise. Some have been added over the years, most recently the high windows in the South Wall designed by Alan Younger and installed on the occasion of the Jubilee of the Chapel in The Baptismal Font was donated by the congregation of Dennistoun Blackfriars Church and continues a link which goes back to the earliest days of the University. Other recent additions are an oak table and lectern built by the University s own craftsmen. The table incorporates the University crest and a motif matching the stall panels. It is used for The Signing of The Register in the some 150 weddings of alumni, students, staff and their families who are married in the Chapel each year. The Service of Remembrance is an important event in the life of the University. All are welcome regardless of the religion or belief position they hold. The University with the Officers and Cadets of the Officers Training Corps, the Universities Royal Naval Unit, the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron, with students, staff and alumni attend the Service each year. The Sermon will be preached by John Lowrie Morrison, OBE (Jolomo). The address will be delivered by Professor Anton Muscatelli FRSE AcSS, Principal of the University. The Director of Chapel Music is Ms Katy Cooper and the organ is played by Professor John Butt, Gardiner Professor of Music.

11 Thereafter the Congregation is requested to sit for: PRINCIPAL S ADDRESS Professor Anton Muscatelli FRSE AcSS Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow Anton Muscatelli has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow since 1 October From he was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot- Watt University. An economist, his research interests are monetary economics, central bank independence, fiscal policy, international finance and macroeconomics. He has been ( ) a special adviser on monetary policy to the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee. He has previously acted as consultant to the European Commission and the World Bank. He is a member of the Board of the Scottish Funding Council which provides funding and oversight of Scotland s Colleges and Universities. From he was Convenor of Universities Scotland and Vice-President of Universities UK. Professor Muscatelli co-chaired, with Sir Richard Lambert, the steering board for the creation of the National Centre for Universities and Business and was subsequently invited to join its Board of Directors. He is a Trustee of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Europe, a member of the Board of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, and he chairs the Commission on Urban Economic Growth for the new Glasgow City Region. He is a member of the Scottish Government s Council of Economic Advisers and its Widening Access Commission. He is a Director of USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme) and President of the David Hume Institute.
