Ben Quint Father Joe s Prose May 20, - Pentecost Sunday 2 As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, we have the two familiar accounts of the events in chapter 2 of the Acts of the Apostles and the Johannine Gospel 20:19-23, occurring Easter Sunday afternoon. The Gospel account falls neatly into two sections. There is the actual appearance of the risen Lord to the disciples and the commissioning of the disciples confirmed by the gift of the Holy Spirit. After the death of Jesus, the disciples, fearing the Jewish authorities, locked themselves in a room. Jesus suddenly appears before them. His first words to them convey to them his peace. They were not convinced! After showing his hands and his side, this convinces them that it is really Jesus standing before them. Once again he gives them the gift of his peace and they accept it with Joy. He then commissions them to carry on his work, which is to reveal the identity of the Holy Spirit. The disciples are commissioned to forgive sins which they will encounter in their new mission of carrying on the work of Jesus in the world. In Luke s Acts of the Apostles, the apostles received instructions from the Risen Lord over forty days. The time is right for them to receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. The scene depicts the creation account with the strong driving wind. The disciples are created anew. They are filled with the Holy Spirit just as the first human is filled with the breath of life. Jerusalem is filled with many pilgrims speaking different languages. Yet each is able to understand the apostles as they preach about the mighty acts of God, especially the death and resurrection of Jesus. How has the Spirit empowered you to proclaim and live the gospel message that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead? It s like a Vacation Bible School on Steroids! Who Can Attend? The Totus Tuus Grade 1-6 program is designed for children going into 1st through 6th grades in the -19 school year. The Grades 1-6 program runs Monday through Friday (June 18-22) from 9:00AM - 2:30PM daily. Students are asked to bring a sack lunch. Snack and beverages will be provided throughout the day. Totus Tuus offers formation in the evening for those entering the 7th & 8th grades and those entering grades 9-12 for the -19 school year from 7:00-9:15PM Sunday through Thursday (June 17-21). The junior high students will join the senior high students for the evening program; however their classes will remain separate to maintain an atmosphere and discussion level that is appropriate for both age groups.
