3 Join us for our annual Parish Picnic this Sunday!!!! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The disciples gathered on the fi ieth day a er the Resurrec on were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fi ieth day a er Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and a er the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebra on is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Chris ans the connec on to the gi s of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an "eye" in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. A er the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. ALL ARE SENT Fi y days a er Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God's promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has some mes been called the birthday of the church. One last me we are reminded that we Chris ans have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Chris an voca on. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Chris an voca on. Paul's le er shows us the gi s and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. Crowning of Mary On Friday, May 18 th at 8:15 Mass the children held a crowning of our Blessed Mother. The children brought flowers to honor Mary and thank her for caring for us. Dinosaurs at SHS Dinosaur ROCKS, visited Sacred Heart last week are presented a program on dinosaurs and fossil to the Kinder -5 th graders. They students were wide-eyed and excited. What a great experience. Beauty and the Beast Thursday night, May 24 th the students present their spring produc on of Beauty and the Beast. The play starts at 6:30 in the new hall. Everyone is invited SHS Summer Program Sacred Heart School is once again offering Summer Camp for students 3 year olds through 5 th grade. Camp starts on Monday, June 4 th and runs through August 3rd. Fees are $110 per week per child or $30 a day for drop-ins. Drop off as early as 7:00am and we close at 6:00pm.
