1 FEAST OF ALL SAINTS: NOVEMBER 1 The Feasts of All Saints and All Souls both evolved in the life of the Church independently of paganism and Halloween. However, elements of pagan practices were perhaps baptized by some cultures or attached themselves to the celebration of All Saints and All Souls. The exact origins of the Feast of All Saints are uncertain, although, after the legalization of Christianity in 313, a common commemoration of Saints, especially the martyrs, appeared in various areas throughout the Church. The primary reason for establishing a common feast day was because of the desire to honour the great number of martyrs, especially during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian ( ), the worst and most extensive of the persecutions. Quite simply, there were not enough days of the year for a feast day for each martyr and many of them died in groups. A common feast day for all saints, therefore seemed most appropriate. Fr. William Saunders ALL SAINTS WILL BE CELEBRATED AT 9 AM & 7 PM Join our youth, families and all parishioners on the First Friday, November 1, at 7 pm for prayers and Mass as we pray for vocations and for our priests. We have a light supper and time of fellowship following the Mass and games for the kids. PRAYER FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Nov. 2 November is an important time of year for commemoration in Canada. On the second of the month, we celebrate All Souls Day, on which we remember all the deceased. On the 11th, we will be celebrating Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, in honour of those who gave their lives for our country, and on November 3, a special Mass for our deceased priests (see next page). In fact, the whole month of November is dedicated to remembering the dead. What does it mean to remember the deceased? We recall first of all that we are the Body of Christ and that our family also includes those who have gone before us. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the Communion of Saints, a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those expiating their sins in Purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is an abundant exchange of all good things. Blessed are those who have died in the Lord; let them rest from their labours for their good deeds go with them. Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. All Souls falls on Saturday this year, so there will be one Mass at noon.
2 CHILDREN S CLASSES AT HOLY NAME Saturday, November 2: please arrive a few minutes early! Level 6: 1:45-3:00 Level 3: 3:15-4:30 Please be sure to bring your workbook, missal, pencil and eraser. LEARN MORE ABOUT EUTHANASIA FROM AN EXPERT With Dr. Margaret Somerville, Founding Director, Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law, McGill University. Monday, October 28, from 7:30-9:30 pm. St. Edmund of Canterbury Parish, 105 Beaconsfield Blvd., Beaconsfield. Register with St. Edmund s Faith Education Office (514) LAST SUNDAY S COLLECTIONS Regular collection: $2,950.61; 3 rd Sunday: $1,210.71; Mission Sunday: $ Thanks to all! During the Year of Faith, we are called to stop saying, What would I do without my faith? and start asking ourselves What am I doing with my faith? We are challenged to live our faith through our actions. Faith in action is stewardship. RECENTLY MARRIED Tommy Chou & Joelle Chan at St. Patrick s Basilica. The groom is the son of Alan & Mae Chou of our parish to whom we offer our congratulations. We extend our prayers and best wishes to the couple as they now live out their vows of unity, fidelity and indissolubility. HERE S A QUESTION ON MARTYRS Is it true that all the apostles except John were martyred? Do we have historical evidence, or is that information based in legend? The Bible relates only the suicide of Judas and the execution of James (see Acts 12:1-2). The fates of the remaining apostles are the matter of legend and tradition. However, these should not be dismissed, as some sources are quite close to the events they describe. One writer, St. Ignatius of Antioch (c ), is believed to have been a disciple of John the Evangelist, and appointed bishop of Antioch by St. Peter. As he was led to Rome for execution, Ignatius wrote a series of letters. In one, he observed: Peter was crucified; Paul and James were slain with the sword; John was banished to Patmos; Stephen was stoned to death by the Jews who killed the Lord. But none of these sufferings were in vain (Epistle to the Trallians). Another early writer is Eusebius (c ), called the Father of Church History. His Ecclesiastical History includes details of the apostles, and although scholars dispute some of his facts, he remains highly regarded because several of the sources he consulted have since been lost. Fr. Reginald Martin PARISH BEREAVEMENT GROUP Thursday, Oct. 9:30 am, and every 2 nd Thursday thereafter.
