2 St. Michael the Archangel Parish www. indlaystmichael.org LENT BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY! This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. We will be offering Masses at the Main Church at 7:00a.m., 9:00a.m., and 7:00p.m. We will offer Masses at the Downtown Church at 12:10p.m. and 5:30p.m. and at the Winebrenner Seminary at 8:30p.m. During Lent, the Church invites us to additional acts of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is the duty of all Christians to engage in some sort of fasting as a form of penance as a way of turning from sin and turning toward God. Mastering our physical appetites and desires helps us to grow in the internal discipline of avoiding sin and seeking virtue. As we begin Lent, let s take a moment to review Church law regarding fasting and abstinence. FASTING The Church requires Catholics ages to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is defined as eating only one full meal and two small (not-full) meals, which if added together, would not be greater than the main meal. While fasting, one should also refrain from food between meals. ABSTINENCE The Church requires all Catholics ages 14 and older to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products, or condiments made from animal fat. Obviously, there are times when a person is not obliged to fast or abstain (for example when sick, frail, or during pregnancy). OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER AND FASTING: We will have many opportunities, as a parish family, for additional prayer and fasting this Lent. We will pray the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent at 7:00p.m. at the Downtown Church and will offer a number of opportunities, both communally and individually, for confession. We will continue to offer Lenten Programs on the Wednesdays of Lent at 7:00p.m. at the Downtown Church and the Knights of Columbus will host their annual Fish Fries on the Fridays of Lent (except Good Friday). OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALMSGIVING: This weekend the Diocese of Toledo kicks off the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). As a parish of the Diocese, we could not exist or function without the help and support of our Diocesan Ministries and Offices. Our ACA goal this year for St. Michael s is $100,000. On the weekend of March Bishop Thomas has asked our parish to host Bishop Herbert Bevard of the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands for a Mission Appeal for his Diocese. As you know, the Virgin Islands were devastated by back-to-back hurricanes this past year. We are humbled to be hosting Bishop Bevard with the hope that we might be able to financially support our brothers and sisters in Christ in his Diocese as they continue to recover from the devastating effects of the hurricanes. I pray that we generously and wholeheartedly support the ACA and Bishop Bevard s Mission Appeal. Many hands make light work! The above are just a sampling of the many opportunities to grow deeper in our relationship with God at St. Michael s this Lent. Please continue to check the parish bulletin, website, and Facebook for a full listing of the many Lenten activities taking place in our parish. Wishing you and your family a blessed Lent In Christ, Fr. Mike Free Brown Bag Lunches will be distributed by the Leo Councile es a er the 12:10pm Mass on Ash Wednesday - while supplies last. The lunches will include a tuna or egg salad sandwich, baby carrots and a Life Saver mint. Valentine s Day is when we celebrate the love we share with spouses, family, and friends, and Ash Wednesday/Lent point us to the greatest act of love, when Jesus Christ gave up His life on the cross that we might be forgiven and live. While we may have to strategize a little more this year and celebrate traditional Valentine s day festivities the weekend before or in conjunction with Mardi Gras, the fact that Valentine s Day falls on Ash Wednesday is great inspiration to maintain a Lenten focus on loving others as He loves you, to re-commit yourself this Lent to be more and do more for the ones we Love. A Lenten Program - The Seven I Am Sayings of Jesus begins Wednesday, February 21. Please visit our parish website for more information. 6 St. Michael the Archangel Parish www. indlaystmichael.org A letter from Bishop Thomas was sent out asking for your gift and/or pledge to support the ministries of the Diocese of Toledo. This letter gives all registered parishioners an opportunity to contribute to the Appeal, especially those who are unable to attend Mass. The Annual Catholic Appeal will be unbelievably successful if every member of our parish carefully considers their circumstances and truly strives to give a significant gift. Please give prayerful consideration to your level of support to help fund the essential ministries and services supported by the Appeal. To learn more about the appeal, visit: Recently, St. Michael the Archangel Parish was honored by Christian Clearing House at their Annual Meeting for our 25 years of outstanding support to the Agency with an award called Continuing the Legacy. St. Mike s was one of the original participating congregations that helped establish the Christian Clearing House in 1993 and is the leading congregation with financial support, as well as providing the most volunteers to CCH - over 20! Our parish continually provides innumerable taxable items for their Caring Cupboard. We have an excellent collaborative effort between our parish and CCH. We have many reasons to be proud of belonging to this Catholic family who lives the gospel of caring for those in our community facing difficult times.

It is a me when many people want to do something more to foster their spiritual life and make the world a be er place. This year, the school will be using Lent 4.2-Chris an Simplicity to help our students and families focus on a par cular aspect of consump on as it relates to Chris an simplicity. For those of you par cipa ng in the Parish Lenten Bible study focusing on Pope Francis Encyclical Laudato Si, you will be able to make many connec ons between the bible study and the ideas shared in Lent 4.2. As a school, Lent 4.2 will serve as a guide to help students use this Lenten season to par cipate in prayer, fas ng, almsgiving, and conversion. As Ash Wednesday approaches, we are asked to focus on Chris an Simplicity with the goal to live more simply so others may simply live. This week s challenge is to learn about and adopt lifestyle changes that reduce the amount of resources we use. Did you know that if we divided resources equitable for each human on earth, there would be 4.2 acres available to support each human being? However, it takes 22.3 acres to maintain the average American lifestyle. In contrast, Africans living in Tanzania need 2.6 acres to support their average lifestyle. Ac on Steps for families: Use cloth shopping bags instead of paper or plas c Change the lights in your house to CFL bulbs as they use less electricity Pack lunches with reusable containers rather than baggies that are thrown away Forgo TV and/or social media at least one day during the week Abstain from over-scheduling your life Read Psalm 104 together Connect with God s natural world at least once a week Calculate your carbon footprint with your child at zereofootprintkids.com Faithfully, Amy Holzwart, Principal Calendar Highlights February 15 Sixth Grade Retreat February 19 Presidents Day - NO SCHOOL February 20 Sta ons of the Cross 8:15am in the Main Church Saint Families Eucharis c Exposi on 1:15pm in the Main Church February 26 Cribbage Club Quiz Bowl Upcoming Mass Times: Ash Wednesday All School Mass Wednesday, February 14, 9:00am *If school is delayed on Ash Wednesday, the All School Mass will be held at 1:00pm.
