3 Walking the Camino and the Story of St. James by Catherine Lopez In the Gospel, James the Great - or Santiago in Spanish - is one of Christ s first apostles. Known as the son of thunder for his strong character, he was one of Christ s favorite disciples and appears in crucial passages in the Gospels. Sacred Scripture also describes his death in Jerusalem in the year 44 by order of King Herod. The Camino (The Way) to Santiago de Compostela honors the memory of St. James. After his death his body was returned to Compostela where he had done great work evangelizing and caring for the poor. St. James is buried below the main altar in the famous Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. It is one of the major churches of pilgrimage in the world. Earlier this summer, my sister, Mary, and I started this pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James in Sarria, Spain. Six days later, after walking over 115km, ( 72 miles), we arrived in Santiago de Compostela. Our journey was short compared to walking the full Camino which takes about 30 days, but each step was full of grace and wonder. Pilgrimage can be a time to press a pause buttontime out, a time to take stock. It is an opportunity for prayer, contemplation and reflection, and offers a very spiritual experience. Mary and I journeyed through rain and over difficult terrain. With our blisters and tired bodies, we experienced a rich display of faith and devotion. It was a graced and sacred time for both of us. We walked 115 km, fulfilling the criteria for a bonafide pilgrim, and were granted the official certification for walking the Camino. This certification is called The Compostela. The document certifies that one has made the pilgrimage for religious or spiritual reasons. To obtain it you have to present your credentials, stamped at a sufficient number of places along the way, to prove that you have at least done the last 115 km on foot. On day six we arrived at the magnificent 11 th century Cathedral. As we knelt in front of the decorative silver casket, the burial place of St. James, we prayed in thanksgiving for graces received along the Way, and for our loved ones. The journey was not easy; it was the pilgrimage of a life time. But I highly recommend it. As we walked together, we shared faith, memories, devotion, gentleness and deep appreciation for life, the earth, and many other blessings of The Way. Buen Camino! The Pumpkin Patch Is Coming Back FUNDRAISER The Knights of Columbus are hosting their 8th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday, September 13 at the SilverHorn Golf Club. 4 Memorial Acclamation By Paul Turner Dear Pro-Life Friend, I'm writing to invite you to join me for an important pro-life prayer service taking place in San Antonio on Saturday, September 13. On that day, pro-life Americans will honor the memory of the more than 50 million unborn victims of abortion during the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. Solemn prayer services will be held simultaneously at gravesites around the country where abortion victims have been buried, as well as at many other memorial sites dedicated in their honor. I hope that you will be able to join me for the memorial service taking place in our community as part of the the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children: Event: Memorial Service for Victims of Abortion When: Saturday, September 13 at 9:30am Location: Hope Monument at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto of the Southwest Address: 5712 Blanco Rd, San Antonio, TX This solemn memorial service will last approximately one hour. Please come out for this important pro-life event, prayerfully witnessing to the humanity of our unborn brothers and sisters, together with our fellow pro-lifers throughout the country. Be sure to bring your own chair and water. For more information contact call Phil Trickett The memorial acclamation announces the community s belief in the death and resurrection of Christ. It is sung or recited by the entire assembly during the Eucharistic prayer of every mass, after we hear the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. This brief statement summarizes the core mystery of the faith we hold. For hundreds of years prior to the Second Vatican Council, the Roman Catholic Church used only one Eucharistic prayer, the one called the Roman Canon. It had no memorial acclamation for the people to sing. But the priest did say the words, the mystery of faith. After the council, some wanted to eliminate those words because they were too difficult for people to understand. Instead, the words were expanded so that all might understand and announce together the mystery of our faith. The text of the acclamation is variable. There are three options in Latin. The first used to be translated two different ways, bringing the number of memorial acclamations in English to four. In the revised translation of the Mass, there are only three options, one for each of the original ones in Latin. The second acclamation is nearly a direct quote from 1 Corinthians 11:26. The first one is based on the same biblical passage, but includes the notion of the resurrection. The third, which mentions the cross and resurrection, may be used more during the seasons of Lent and Easter. There are no rules governing the usage of the three acclamations. Any of them may be used at any Mass. They are most effective when they are sung. They help the community express its unified confidence in the death, resurrection and return of Jesus Christ. PRO-LIFE NOVENA FOR UNBORN BABIES The multinational PRO-LIFE NOVENA FOR UNBORN BABIES is scheduled to happen September 29th - October 7th, For these nine days, Masses will be offered and Rosaries will be prayed for the following intention: For the protection of unborn human persons. A person may be a part of this Novena by doing one or both of the following: 1) Have at least one Mass offered(for the above-stated intention) during these nine days; 2) Pray one Rosary (for the above-stated intention) each day of the Novena. Complete information, including how to register, is available by going to the website:

6 WHAT IS CRIT? WHAT IS CRIT? BY SAM SZALWINSKI Each time that I ask someone if they know of CRIT, I received a blank stare. That s OK. It wasn t until Bev and I, went with Chris Lewis to Guadalajara, Mexico a year ago that we heard of it. CRIT is a Mexican acronym that stands for Central Rehabilitacion de Infantil Telecon. This is a facility that cares for children up to the age of 18 who have a variety of maladies. It is very popular in Mexico with about 21 facilities spread throughout the country. The CRIT organization is now constructing their first facility in the United States. In fact, that facility is being built right here in San Antonio. It is located near Meagan s Wonderland near the intersection of Thousand Oaks and Loop 410. If your travels take you in this vicinity, you will see a very bright red building with trim in dark purple. This is the trademark colors of all CRIT facilities in Mexico. CRIT, in San Antonio is being built with Mexican resources. Historically, a fundraiser takes place in Mexico during the first few days of December each year. I was told that the facility in San Antonio will cost about $16.3 million to furnish. Our Parish wheelchair fund raiser conducted in early June netted more than $34,000. Three parishes combined raised approximately $57,500. These parishes include St. Mark, St. Francis of Assissi and Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Selma. With these funds two containers of wheelchairs have been ordered. A large container of 280 chairs will be donated to the CRIT facility. A small container of 110 chairs will be available for needy people throughout Texas. The cost of these wheel chairs is $42,000 and $16,500 respectively. The American Wheelchair Mission will cover the $1,000 difference. In dedication of the CRIT facility, this will take place on October 30, It is expected that the wheelchairs will arrive before this date and 280 of them will be presented to CRIT at dedication ceremonies on that date as well. There will be a tremendous need for people who would like to volunteer when this facility becomes active. Watch for more information in upcoming issues. St. Vincent de Paul - Feast Day 27 September The Patron Saint of Charity, St Vincent de Paul was born of poor parents on 25 April, 1581, close to Pouy, in the South west of France. Pouy is now named Vincent de Paul in his honor. The family lived off the land and all family members helped to work the farm. Vincent however was considered a good scholar and was sent to the Franciscan boarding school in Dax. He then moved to the University of Toulouse to study theology. After which he was ordained a priest in Forced into slavery In 1605, on a voyage by sea from Marseilles to Narbonne, he fell into the hands of African pirates and, wounded, was carried as a slave to Tunis. His captivity lasted about two years, until Divine Providence helped him escape. After a brief visit to Rome, he returned to France where he became preceptor in the family of Emmanuel de Gondy, Count of Goigny, and General of the galleys of France. Vincentians In 1617, St. Vincent began to preach missions and in 1625 he lay the foundations of a congregation which afterwards became the Congregation of the Mission or Lazarists, so named on account of the Priory of St. Lazarus, which the Fathers began to occupy in Now the Fathers are more commonly known as Vincentians. The Congregation consisted then, as it does now, of priests and laymen who after a period of probation take four simple vows, poverty, chastity, obedience and stability. Humble worker Extensive and rewarding as his work was, it did not satisfy St Vincent s passion for helping suffering people. He started con fraternities to seek out and care for the sick in every parish. He persuaded many wealthy people to donate funds, which helped him open hospitals and care for the poor and sick, especially young children. At the end of his life, the humble priest endured much suffering. On 27 September 1660, he received the last Sacraments and died calmly in his chair. He was 85 years old. Vincent was buried in the church of St. Lazare in Paris. In 1729 he was beatified by Pope Benedict X111 and canonised by Pope Clement X11 in Pope Leo X111 proclaimed him patron of all charitable societies. His emblem is, appropriately, children.
