1 Comparison of Collects in the and Roman Missal Advent 2011 The Office for Worship has compiled these comparisons of the collects to foster prayer and discussion on the rich meaning of these prayers. Often, seeing both translations stimulates theological reflection, conversation and conversion. We encourage you to use the comparisons for prayers, activities with groups, etc. We will provide additional comparisons as the weeks unfold. Rouech 1

2 First Sunday in Advent [that we take Christ s coming seriously] All powerful God, increase our strength of will for doing good that Christ may find an eager welcome at his coming and call us to his side in the kingdom of heaven, where he lives & reigns with you & the Holy one God for ever and ever. ALTERNATE [in Advent time with longing and waiting for the coming of the Lord] Father in heaven, our hearts desire the warmth of your love and our minds are searching for the light of your Word. Increase our longing for Christ our Savior and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of his coming may find us rejoicing in his presence and welcoming the light of his truth We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. from all you give us we present this bread and wine. As we serve you now, accept our offering and sustain us with your promise of eternal life. may our communion teach us to love heaven. May its promise and hope guide our way on earth. Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom. who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Accept, we pray, O these offerings we make, gathered from among your gifts to us, and may what you grant us to celebrate devoutly here below gain for us the prize of eternal redemption. May these mysteries, O in which we have participated, profit us, we pray, for even now, as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures. 3 Second Sunday in Advent [that nothing hinder us from receiving Christ with joy] God of power and mercy, open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy, so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when he comes in glory, for he lives & reigns with you & the Holy one God for ever and ever. ALTERNATE [in Advent time for the coming Savior to teach us wisdom] Father in heaven, the day draws near when the glory of your Son will make radiant the night of the waiting world. May the lure of greed not impede us form the joy which moves the hearts of those who seek him. May the darkness not blind us to the vision of wisdom which fills the minds of those who find him. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. we are nothing without you. As you sustain us with your mercy, receive our prayers & offerings. you give us food from heaven. By our sharing in this mystery, teach us to judge wisely the things of earth and to love the things of heaven. Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Be pleased, O with our humble prayers and offerings, and, since we have no merits to plead our cause, come, we pray, to our rescue with the protection of your mercy. Replenished by the food of spiritual nourishment, we humbly beseech you, O that, through our partaking in this mystery, you may teach us to judge wisely the things of earth and hold firm to the things of heaven. 4 Third Sunday in Advent [that God will fill us with joy at the coming of Christ] Lord God, may we, your people, who look forward to the birthday of Christ experience the joy of salvation and celebrate that feast with love and thanksgiving. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives & reigns with you & the Holy one God for ever and ever. ALTERNATE [in Advent time for joy and hope in the coming Lord] Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever faithful to your promises and ever close to your Church: the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior s coming and looks forward with longing to his return at the end of time. Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope which his presence will bestow, for he is Lord for ever and ever. may the gift we offer in faith and love be a continual sacrifice in your honor and truly become our eucharist and our salvation. God of mercy, may this eucharist bring us your divine help, free us from our sins, and prepare us for the birthday of our Savior, who is Lord for ever and ever. O God, who see how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord s Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy May the sacrifice of our worship, we pray, be offered to you unceasingly, to complete what was begun in sacred mystery and powerfully accomplish for us your saving work. 5 Fourth Sunday in Advent [ as Advent draws to a close that Christ will truly come into our hearts] fill our hearts with your love, and as you revealed to us by an angel the coming of your Son as a man, so lead us through his suffering and death to the glory of his resurrection for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy ALTERNATE [as Advent draws to a close for the faith that opens our lives to the Spirit of God] all-powerful God, your eternal Word took flesh on our earth when the Virgin Mary placed her life at the service of your plan. Lift our minds in watchful hope to hear the voice which announces his glory and open our minds to receive the Spirit who prepares us for his coming. may the power of the which sanctified Mary the mother of your Son, make holy the gifts we place on the altar. in this sacrament we receive the promise of salvation; as Christmas draws near make us grow in faith and love to celebrate the coming of Christ our Savior, who is Lord for ever and ever. Pour forth, we beseech you, O your grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ your Son was made known by the message of an Angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy May the Holy O sanctify these gifts laid upon your altar, just as he filled with his power the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Having received this pledge of eternal redemption, we pray, almighty God, that, as the feast day of our salvation draws ever nearer, so we may press forward all the more eagerly to the worthy celebration of the mystery of your Son s Nativity. 6 Christ the King Almighty and merciful God, you break the power of evil and make all things new in your Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe. May all in heaven and earth acclaim your glory and never cease to praise you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy one God, for ever and ever. we offer you the sacrifice by which your Son reconciles mankind. May it bring unity and peace to the world. you give us Christ, the King of all creation, as food for everlasting life. Help us to live by his gospel and bring us to the joy of his kingdom, where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. Almighty ever-living God, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of the universe, grant, we pray, that the whole creation, set free from slavery, may render your majesty service and ceaselessly proclaim your praise. who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy As we offer you, O the sacrifice by which the human race is reconciled to you, we humbly pray, that your Son himself may bestow on all nations the gifts of unity and peace. Having received the food of immortality, we ask, O that, glorying in obedience to the commands of Christ, the King of the universe, we may live with him eternally in his heavenly kingdom. 7 Immaculate Conception you prepared the Virgin Mary to be the worthy mother of your Son. You let her share beforehand in the salvation Christ would bring by his death, and kept her sinless from the first moment of her conception. Help us by her prayers to live in your presence without sin. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy ALTERNATE the image of the Virgin is found in the Church. Mary had a faith that your Spirit prepared and a love that never knew sin, for you kept her sinless from the first moment of her conception Trace in our actions the lines of her love, in our hearts her readiness of faith. Prepare once again a world for your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy accept this sacrifice on the feast of the sinless Virgin Mary. You kept her free from sin from the first moments of her life. Help us by her prayers, and free us from our sins. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. our God, in your love, you chose the Virgin Mary and kept her free from sin. May this sacrament of your love free us from our sins. O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son, grant, we pray, that, as you preserved her from every stain by virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw, so, through her intercession, we, too, may be cleansed and admitted to your presence. who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Graciously accept the saving sacrifice which we offer you, O on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and grant that, as we profess her, on account of your prevenient grace, to be untouched by any stain of sin, so, through her intercession, we may be delivered from all our faults. May the Sacrament we have received, O Lord our God, heal in us the wounds of that fault from which in a singular way you preserved Blessed Mary in her Immaculate Conception. Rouech 7
