1 THE SCROLL August 2016 Fayetteville & Doggett Chapel United Methodist Churches August 2016 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the lord with gladness, come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is Go. It is he who made us, and we are his, we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise, give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his live endures forever, his faithfulness continues through all generations. - Psalm 100. Grace and peace to you through our Lord, Jesus Christ! God s purpose for us in ministry is still being unfolded each and every day. Each of us are on our own faith journeys, yet they are really not our journeys alone. Every week we come together to celebrate the gifts and thanksgivings God has blessed us with while also lifting each other up as we struggle through our trials. We are all part of a community seeking God for thanksgiving, healing, worship, and renewal. It seems to me then that worship occurs when the community of saints comes together as a glorified body to worship a glorified God! With this in mind as we journey together, let us begin to focus our attention on the act of worship. In other words, what spiritual practices do we need to focus upon so that we may encounter the glory of the Gospel story? Worshiping as a community of saints helps us to better understand our lives within the context of the story of our faith. Just as Moses and the Israelites wandered through the desert, we too wander through a spiritual desert. The difference between then and now is the assurance of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ. Think about how our lives have been transformed and uplifted by participating in Christ s story each Sunday. Each week, then, is an opportunity for us to relive Easter. That is why I feel it is important for us to think about our worship experience. It is no wonder, then, that we find ourselves at our best when we meet together to seek a better relationship with God, with the community of Fayetteville, and with each other. Thus, I have a few important questions to ask. What is your attitude before you come to church on Sunday morning? Have your prepared your soul for encountering the body of Christ? What stumbling blocks are keeping your heart and soul from encountering Christ? Are you ready to enter God s gates with thanksgiving and praise before Sunday arrives? What seeds from God do you need to have nurtured? What do we need to do for our community of Fayetteville to help prepare those around us to encounter the body of Christ? Remember, we are the body of Christ for the world. So let us prepare our souls and minds to experience Christ, and share that experience with the community of Fayetteville. Then let us prepare to experience the full glory of God in and around us! With Love in and for Christ, Tim

5 Greetings from the Circle of Sisters, We find ourselves heading to that time of year when we have our Annual Yard Sale. It will be on August 5th in Fellowship Hall from 9:00 to 3:00. You can start bringing your donations of items to be sold and put them in the room downstairs by the Ladies restroom. No clothing please, as we have found, it does not sell. We are so grateful to her for heading up this project again this year. The Circle will be giving 10% of what we make back to the Church s general fund like we do with all of our fund raisers. 6 Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball is thrilled to return to the West Virginia Annual Conference POSTED JULY 26, 2016, BY WHITNEY CHERRY Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball is thrilled to return to the West Virginia Annual Conference and continue the work already started for the next quadrennium, as she shows in a letter to the Conference below: Dear Members and Friends of the West Virginia Conference, I am thankful, excited, and honored to be reassigned to the West Virginia Conference for another four years! Thank you for your on-going prayer and support. A fresh wind of the Spirit has been blowing and continues to blow throughout the West Virginia Conference! There is so much to celebrate over the last four years: Average Worship attendance, Professions of faith; Baptisms are all on the rise. We are on our way to reaching our conference goal of reaching for Christ by the end of The 50 days of Easter celebrated the many ways that our churches are connecting with our communities around West Virginia and Garrett County, MD bringing the life and word of Christ to people with physcial, spiritual, economic, and emotional needs. Lead teams in all nine Districts are empowering local mission and ministry in new, creative ways. Over 30% of the Conference leadership elected for the quadrennium are new persons and the membership of Conference teams, boards, and agencies are more diverse in membership than they have ever been before. There is new and innovative ministry with our youth and we are sending youth to other parts of our nation and world to gain experience in leadership and faith development. Additionally, we fulfilled a request and dream of our Conference youth by adding a Conference staff position designated to working with youth and outdoor ministries. We welcomed Shea James into this position in January and she has hit the ground running! Speaking of hitting the ground, Deborah Coble, our new Director of Communications arrived on the scene in West Virginia in June, just before the floods. Deborah jumped in immediately! She traveled to the areas hardest hit to facilitate communication about what was happening and what was needed. Maybe more importantly, she offered a listening ear, hugs, support, and help to people in shock and grief. I could go on. There is so much happening in the name of Christ in the West Virginia Conference! We are becoming an ever expanding fresh wind of God's Spirit, working together to make disciples of Christ, who are transforming the communities and world around us with God's love and grace. We are discovering, with an ever increasing capacity, that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. I am looking forward to discovering what God will work through us in the next four years! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the on-going ministry and mission here in the West Virginia Conference! Grace and Peace, Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball 7

7 Heavenly Father, Please shine your light upon my family. Give us strength to overcome all of the difficulties that we are dealing with now and protect us against any and all problems we may encounter in the future. O Lord, please bring us together as we are meant to be. May the love that binds us only grow stronger as we fulfill the destiny you have laid out for us. Grant my family forgiveness for any sins we have committed. May we also forgive one another Lord, as it is sometimes difficult to do. Prayer to give family strength Bless us Lord, In your name I pray, Amen - See more at: At Fayetteville United Methodist Church We seek to bring others into the family of God by LOVING SERVING WITNESSING and following Christ where He leads us on our Spiritual journey. 9
