1 Eighth Sunday In Ordinary time March 3, 2019 The Lenten Season begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6. During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice selfcontrol through fasting. Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice selfdiscipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection (usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/ liturgical-year/lent/catholicreflection-on-lenten-fasting-fatherdaniel-merz.cfm). In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts - not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446). To read more: visit:

Bishop Robert Barron offers five sermons on the spiritual discipline we must cultivate in the Lenten season, a discipline centered on Christ, available through your FORMED subscription at Subscription is free. Abstaining & Fasting Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. Fasting on Friday is obligatory from age 18 until age 59 (unless medically necessary). When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The purpose of fasting is spiritual focus, self-discipline, imitation of Christ, and performing penance. Bodily fasting is meaningless unless it is joined with a spiritual fast from sin. St. Basil gives the following exhortation regarding fasting: Let us fast an acceptable and very pleasing fast to the Lord. True fast is the estrangement from evil, temperance of tongue, abstinence from anger, separation from desires, slander, falsehood and perjury. Privation of these is true fasting. The act of abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards on those days and all Fridays in Lent. St Joseph Novena March Our parish is blessed to have Saint Joseph as its patron saint: Saint Joseph, the most Chaste Spouse of the Virgin Mary, Patron of men, husbands and fathers, of workers and of those in need of immediate assistance. In his honor and to pray for his intercession, we are starting a new tradition this year of spiritual preparation leading up to his feast day on March 19 and invite you to be part of this new tradition. We will have a Novena to St. Joseph with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament daily from March 10 through March 18, from 7:00 to 8:00pm each night except Sundays. (On Sundays, the Novena prayer will be recited at every Mass.) Part of the Novena is a brief reflection on St. Joseph (3-5 minutes) offered by our parishioners. Please join us as often as possible! New Parishioners Breakfast Saturday, March 9, 9:00am (Rescheduled from March 2) Are you new to our parish? Are you considering joining? We invite you for a coffee social to meet our priests and parish staff at the Rectory. If you have questions or to RSVP, please contact Sherley Lim: secretary@sjbalameda.org or (510) , by March 6. We look forward to meeting you!

3 Clergy Corner A Message from the Pastor March, a Joyful Month of Extra Spiritual Blessings The month of March is very special every year, but particularly this year. March 6th is Ash Wednesday, the start of what the Church calls the joyful season of Lent. Usually, we think of joy and love during the season of Advent and Christmas. God s love for us is made known most clearly in the birth of the Child Jesus in the manger, but that is only the beginning of God s love story - the easy part! Perhaps the tough, adult love that Jesus personifies in the rest of his life is too much for us to call it joyful. The secret is to see the message of love and joy in everything Jesus says and does. We truly experience joy and love when we let go of our plans and dreams and surrender to the Heavenly Father s will as Jesus did. Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit. We experience true joy and love when we practice forgiveness. Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. To find joy in Lent is much more seasoned, mature joy. Jesus said: A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. Luke 6:43-44 Congratulations to Deacon Patrick Kleikas who was ordained as transitional deacon on February 7. He will be ordained as a priest of the Diocese of Reno on June 16. Until then, Patrick will serve at St. Joseph, celebrating weddings and baptisms, and proclaiming the Gospel at Sunday Masses. Please pray for him and his family, and for vocations. (Picture: Patrick with his parents at his ordination) The month of March is also special because we celebrate the feast of St. Patrick on March 17th and the feast of our patron, St. Joseph on 19th. May St. Patrick give us ardent faith when our faith is weak. May St. Joseph give us great trust in the providence of God when we are unduly anxious about the future. I invite everyone to recite the prayer to St. Joseph every day of the month of March and also to participate in the novena to St. Joseph which begins on 10th and ends on 18th, 7:00 to 8:00pm in the Basilica is the centennial of our beautiful St. Joseph Basilica. It will definitely be a time of rejoicing and celebration but most importantly a time of spiritual renewal for St. Joseph Family. As we prepare for Lent, a season of grace and celebrate the feast of St. Joseph, may God bring us extra special blessings from above. May our Lord bless us all on our spiritual journey towards the centennial of St. Joseph Basilica on March 19, Fr. George Alengadan Lenten Soup Meals start this Thursday, 6:00pm Please join us in Notre Dame Hall each Thursday. This week s soup meal is hosted by the Young Families Ministry. Students at Saint Joseph Elementary School spread St. Valentine love by donating over 200 non-perishable food items to the Alameda Food Bank. Led by the Student Council, students wanted to remind others that hunger does not just happen at the holidays. Learning about the Corporal Works of Mercy is part of Saint Joseph Elementary School's service learning program. These programs take learning outside the textbooks by turning what students read and learn into action. Often these lessons reflect Catholic social teaching. Other service learning projects this year have been the Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Alameda Food Bank, the Christmas Toy Drive with Random Acts of Kindness, and partnership with Alameda Point Collaborative in making blankets for the homeless and providing necessary tools to further efforts in helping the homeless. Don t forget to turn your clocks one hour ahead on March 10 so you will be on time next weekend for Mass.
