I can still hear one of my good friends yelling out as the honorary parade marshal rode by in a convertible decorated for the occasion Raymond Leo! The honorary marshal was Raymond Cardinal Leo Burke, the Archbishop of St. Louis. While I can t imagine yelling out like that in jovial excitement at a Cardinal today, it s a good memory from my early twenties. St. Patrick s day is typically a great occasion to sing some Irish songs, have a beer or two, and appreciate our shared (whether actually or just by association) Irish heritage. I say typically, because this year, even though I m happy to participate in our St. Patrick s Day Dinner here at the parish, I think we need to refocus on the heritage that St. Patrick himself actually sacrificed to deliver to the people of Ireland at great personal cost. That heritage is our Catholic Faith. With the referendum passing to allow for abortion, to steeply declining Mass attendance, to removal of Catholic imagery from public places, today, that faith is under radical attack in the Emerald Isle. That nation that St. Patrick once helped rescue from the darkness of pagan despair is apparently choosing today to help the dark clouds of hopelessness regain their reign. So what can we do? I realize we do not live in Ireland. However, I think we need to learn from this sad example and redouble our efforts to make sure the faith that St. Patrick so courageously spread does not dissipate in our own hearts and be replaced only with the fleeting and unfulfilling goods that the culture of death has to offer. Is this dramatic? I don t think so. It is heartbreaking to see an inheritance squandered. And so, when we celebrate with all of the green trappings of this day, remember the actual cause of the celebration - not merely St. Patrick, the apostle of Ireland, but the Gospel he came to preach to the people he loved. The Gospel offer to us of eternal life is just as real now as it was when St. Patrick preached it all those centuries ago. That is something not only worth celebrating, but defending (with the help of the intercession of St. Patrick), on March 17th and everyday of the year. May we hold on to that inheritance in the depths of our hearts and joyfully pass it on for many generations to come. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John 2

Lent is a liturgical season in the Church s year that lasts 40 days. Throughout this penitential seasons, we prepare for the celebration of the Lord s passion, death, and resurrection. Repent and believe in the Gospel is our focus during Lent. We engage in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as means of uniting ourselves to Christ and imitating his forty-day fast in the desert. What does the Church require during Lent? -To do penance (this should include prayer, charity, and self-denial) -Abstain (refrain) from eating meat on all Fridays during Lent and on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday -Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday -Fasting allows for one full meal and two snacks throughout the day. What does the Church recommend during Lent? - Sacrificing throughout Lent by giving of our time, talent, and treasure. -Fasting on all weekdays during Lent -Attending daily Mass -Seeking our Lord s forgiveness in Confession -Spending time before our Lord in Adoration or in other forms of prayer. 3

Sister Angela de Fatima Coelho was born in 1971 in the village of Frend -Baião, Portugal. She graduated from the University of Oporto with a degree in medicine, and one week later entered the convent of the Alianca de Santa Maria; one of the fastest growing religious order in Portugal. Salmo 27 (26):1 Una Palabra de Padre Eckert Queridos Amigos, Cuando estaba en la universidad en St. Louis, recuerdo que la pasé muy bien con mis amigos celebrando el Día de San Patricio en uno de los grandes desfiles / fiestas en la ciudad. Todavía puedo escuchar a uno de mis buenos amigos gritar mientras el mariscal del desfile honorario pasaba en un descapotable decorado para la ocasión "Raymond Leo". El mariscal honorario fue el Cardenal Raymond Leo Burke, el Arzobispo de San Luis. Si bien no puedo imaginarme gritar de esa manera con entusiasmo jovial en un Cardenal hoy, es un buen recuerdo de mis primeros veinte años. El día de San Patricio suele ser una gran ocasión para cantar algunas canciones irlandesas, tomar una cerveza o dos y apreciar nuestra herencia irlandesa compartida (ya sea en realidad o simplemente por asociación). Lo digo normalmente, porque este año, aunque estoy contento de participar en nuestra Cena del Día de San Patricio aquí en la parroquia, creo que tenemos que volver a concentrarnos en la herencia que el propio San Patricio realmente sacrificó para entregar a la gente de Irlanda a un gran costo personal. Esa herencia es nuestra fe católica. Con el referéndum aprobado para permitir el aborto, disminuir la asistencia a la misa, retirar las imágenes católicas de los lugares públicos, hoy en día, esa fe está bajo un ataque radical en la Isla Esmeralda. Esa nación a la que San Patricio ayudó una vez a rescatar de la oscuridad de la desesperación pagana aparentemente está eligiendo hoy para ayudar a las nubes oscuras de la desesperanza a recuperar su reinado. Entonces, qué podemos hacer? Me doy cuenta de que no vivimos en Irlanda. Sin embargo, creo que debemos aprender de este triste ejemplo y redoblar nuestros esfuerzos para asegurarnos de que la fe que San Patricio difundió tan valientemente no se disipe en nuestros corazones y sea reemplazada solo por los bienes fugaces e insatisfactorios que la cultura de la muerte tiene que ofrecer. Es esto dramático? No lo creo. Es desgarrador ver una herencia desperdiciada. Y así, cuando celebramos con todas las trampas verdes de este día, recuerde la causa real de la celebración, no solo San Patricio, el apóstol de Irlanda, sino el Evangelio que vino a predicar a las personas que amó. La oferta del Evangelio de la vida eterna es tan real ahora como lo fue cuando San Patricio lo predicó hace tantos siglos. Eso es algo que no solo vale la pena celebrar, sino también defender (con la ayuda de la intercesión de San Patricio), el 17 de marzo y todos los días del año. Que conservemos esa herencia en lo más profundo de nuestros corazones y la transmitamos con alegría a las generaciones venideras. Sinceramente en Cristo, Padre John 86

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La Cuaresma nos llama a la conversión, a la cual deberíamos estar dedicados todo el año. En muchas parroquias latinas la Cuaresma también es tiempo de misiones. De niño recuerdo haber participado cada año en las misiones de mi parroquia. Escuchábamos a los predicadores con curiosidad, ya que aparecían solo una vez al año y luego se regresaban a lugares lejanos y desconocidos. Nunca imagine que algún día yo también estuviera como predicador de misiones. Me gustaría darles un resumen del mensaje que he sembrado en varias parroquias. Las misiones no son para repetir doctrina, sino para evangelizar a los bautizados. Con cinco temas se puede evangelizar a los bautizados recordándoles los cinco puntos claves del Evangelio cristiano: 1) Dios nos ama y nos hizo para él; 2) Nosotros hemos pecado y sufrimos las consecuencias; 3) Dios nos manda a su Hijo para librarnos del mal; 4) Jesús desea formar parte de nuestras vidas personales, invitémoslo! y 5) Jesús llena nuestro corazón con el poder y la presencia de su Espíritu. Este mensaje es uno de conversión y esperanza. En los Evangelios sinópticos Pedro, Santiago y Juan son los discípulos que se mencionan con más frecuencia y los más cercanos a Jesús. En el pasaje de hoy él los escoge específicamente para que sean testigos de su transfiguración. Nosotros oramos para que, como ellos, seamos testigos dignos del poder transformador de Dios en nuestra vida. Pregunta de la Semana Cómo puedo ser testigo de la gracia de Dios en mi vida? 8 SCHOOL NEWS Follow us on Contact Us Office Phone: (704) Website: On Saturday, March 2nd, Sacred Heart hosted their 10th Annual Benefit Auction Event. It was a tremendous evening of great fellowship, food, and fun.. We are very excited to announce that we raised approximately $101,000 net profit for our school. With $40,000 of that designated to the bus, we will have $61,000 left to continue to support Tuition Assistance, our technology programs, a new World History curriculum, and our STREAM curriculums and Makerspace for enhanced student learning. Our mission is to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel and to develop each student spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially, so that each is prepared to live and serve in a changing society as a self-respecting and responsible citizen. Sacred Heart is currently enrolling for school year. We serve students in Kindergarten 8th grades. All requests for tuition financial assistance are on a first-come first-serve basis. DESSERT DASH 2019 We love to dash for our dessert because the best of the best desserts shows up at our Benefit Event. Our sales totaled to a sweet $6,375. This year, we had cake that went as high as $525, and the average sale price was $215. Many thanks to our Sacred Heart bakers you rock!! GREAT NEWS! We have caught the bus! Thanks to enormous support at our Benefit Auction and several online and mailed donations, Sacred Heart had met their BUS Campaign Goal of $85,000. THANK YOU! We raised $39,500 at our 2019 auction, combined with $500 in online sales, plus the $48,245 raised in 2018, we are finally ready to GET our bus.
