Eckert Dear Friends, Just a few more days until Ash Wednesday. I want to offer a brief quote from Servant of God Dorothy Day to help with your preparations for the Season of Lent. She once wrote, A mystic may be called a person in love with God. Not one who loves God, but who is in love with God. Over the next few days of discerning how you want to spend this Lent, may I suggest keeping that brief phrase in mind. Something tells me that this little phrase is the key difference between merely spending another Lent giving up a small pleasure only to return to it in full after Easter and spending this penitential season being transformed into the lover of Jesus Christ we are each called to be in our own unique circumstances. Remember, while there are requirements that go along with Lent, they are not just boxes to be checked off. Everything is better when you re not merely going through the motions but are actually putting your heart into it. The same is absolutely true when it comes to our relationship with our Lord. I cannot tell you exactly what to do this Lent, but may I recommend, as I promise to strive to lead by example, that whatever you take on during these days, do it like someone in love with God. With prayers for a grace filled Lent for all of us here at Sacred Heart, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. John 2

Quiero ofrecer una breve cita del siervo de Dios Dorothy Day para ayudar con sus preparativos para la temporada de Cuaresma. Una vez escribió: Un místico puede ser llamado una persona enamorada de Dios. No uno que ame a Dios, sino que estés enamorado de Dios. En una de esas visitas mi abuelo y mis tíos estaban quemando la tierra en su rancho. Mientras el fuego ardía, papa Manuel nos explicaba que era necesario reducir todo en cenizas para que la tierra recobrara sus fuerzas y quedará más fértil. Sin saberlo, mi abuelo me dio la imagen que hasta hoy sostiene mi concepto del Miércoles de Cenizas y de la Cuaresma. El Miércoles de Cenizas es la fiesta cristiana que por lo menos doce siglos ha señalado el comienzo de la Cuaresma. No cabe duda de que para los latinos este día es de particular atracción. Es uno de los pocos días del año litúrgico en cual llegamos al templo en masa con tal de recibir las cenizas en la frente. Nosotros somos un pueblo enraizado en la tierra y sabemos que la tierra necesita quemarse de vez en cuando para seguir produciendo. Nosotros como la tierra necesitamos dominarnos y cultivarnos para producir frutos y flores para el Señor y los demás.
