Only practicing Catholics may act as Godparents. MARRIAGES: Specific time is set for the celebration of marriage on Saturdays. The common Policy for all the Dioceses of New Jersey requires a period of preparation for the sacrament of Marriage, which includes sessions with the parish priest and attendance at either the Pre-Cana conferences or the Engaged Encounter Weekend. Therefore, arrangements are to be made at least one year in advance and before any social plans are finalized. FIRST PENANCE, FIRST EUCHARIST, CONFIRMATION: Though immediate preparation is given to children before receiving these sacraments, it is expected that children receive a Christian education within their family life, through formal religious education classes, and by attending Sunday worship services. We ask that you be as generous as your means allow. TODAY S READINGS First Reading - Naaman, cleansed from his leprosy, returns to Elisha and pledges his belief in and allegiance to the Lord. Second Reading - Remember Jesus Christ, who was raised from the dead. If we persevere, we shall reign with him. Gospel - After ten lepers are cleansed by Jesus, only one, a Samaritan, returns to give him thanks. Healing Faith The sight of a leper in biblical times was enough to singe the tassels off a prayer shawl: clothes torn, hair worn long and shaggy, beards tied, open and oozing sores, shouting to any and all approaching, Unclean! Unclean! Bad as it was to be covered with sores, Jewish law demanded that lepers look even more ghoulish to scare people away. So imagine the horror and disgust of Jesus followers as the ten lepers boldly approach. One of them is a Samaritan, which to the Jews of Jesus time was like having leprosy twice. All ten lepers shout out to Jesus to pity them. He does, telling them to show themselves to the temple priests, who according to the Law must pronounce them clean (healed). Off they go. Along the way, all ten are cured. Yet only one of the ten right, the Samaritan returns to offer thanks. Imagine how Jesus feels. Like a leper, maybe? Monday, October 10 is Columbus Day, a holiday. The Parish Office will be closed and will re-open Tuesday.

4 St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church To Sponsor Slavic Dinner Wednesday, October 12, :00 PM to 7:00 PM The dinner will be held in the St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Boulevard, Hillsborough, NJ.
