3 February 10, 2019 From the Desk of the Pastor Dear Friends in Christ, Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee Glory to Jesus Christ We have a number of items this week. First, I need to share with you news of the sudden death of Helen Novak. She died last weekend in her 92 nd year. If you don t know who she was, you may have seen a lady in church with a portable oxygen tank. That was Helen. I am very proud of the fact that our parish had a couple of faithful women who regularly checked in on Helen to make sure she was okay. Helen never married, but in these kind souls she had a family who cared deeply about her. These two people know who they are and God will bless them enormously. The last time I saw Helen was about two weeks ago when I brought her some of our parish pyrohi. She was happy beyond words. The reason I share this news with you is to encourage you to have a Last Will and Testament. If you love your family and friends, please make it a point to call someone you trust and make arrangements for your inevitable death. (John Sembrat, Esq. has been generously giving us his time to help make arrangements for Helen). At this time we cannot find her next of kin, so immediate funeral arrangements are uncertain. May her memory be eternal! This National Marriage Week. We have a special greeting from our Bishop to each couple celebrating an anniversary. Be attentive to your name being called out at the end of the liturgy to receive your certificate. We have two major events here at HTUCC in the coming month. On March 7-9 we will have a parish retreat being given by Fr. Paul Abernathy. He is a young, Orthodox priest who lives and serves in the Hill District. Parking will be tight, so come early! Second, we have a conference by noted theologian Dr. Theresa Farnan on Gender Ideology and how to respond to this attack on God and human dignity. This will be March 16 th, 9:30-2pm. Also, please make a point of coming on Friday to help with pyrohi. We tend to have fewer hands on Fridays. Jason, priest and sinner. PS: Please read the article in the church vestibule

4 Events at Holy Trinity 2018 Parish Financial Report is available for your review at the side entrance of the church and in the foyer. If you have any questions, please talk to Fr. Jason. Annual Pre-Lenten Family Zabava will be held next Saturday, February 16 th 6pm -10 pm, $10 entry, music, appetizers, water and soft drinks included. Children 6 and under are free. All you can eat Spaghetti Dinner will be held here on Sunday, February 24 th 12 pm-6 pm. Tickets are $12, children ages 6-12 are $6. Dinner includes all you can eat spaghetti with meatballs, dinner roll, salad, desert and a drink. Tickets are on sale now: call rectory or purchase at pyrohi. On Friday, March the 1 st at 6p.m, The Parish Youth Group will be assembling 130 lunches (260 sandwiches) for distribution to homeless and less fortunate in Pittsburgh s Hill District. The total cost of this project is approximately $ Keeping the ancient traditions thriving! Marijka Jula will be offering an Adult only Paska Bread decorating class on Saturday, March 23, 11am-2 pm. All participants will decorate their own 5 ½ diameter mini paska. All materials are provided. Cost $20. Workshop limited to 8 participants. To register call Marijka Jula at (leave a message with your phone number for confirmation). Camp Heritage at Trinity Acres one week only: July 1-5. 10 Pastoral Letter of the 2018 Synod of Bishops on God s Word & Catechesis Learn the Language of Faith The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans states that faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (10,17). The textbook from which we learn the language of faith is the Bible and Catechism of our Church. Therefore, we encourage you to treat the Holy Scriptures and the Catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Christ our Pascha, as the most important books in every family. Our Venerable Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky teaches us how to read the Bible in the family: It is necessary for every Christian to clearly understand the value of reading and knowing the Bible. The Holy Gospel is what sanctifies every home and showers it with grace, for it is bestows faith and love on its inhabitants. The Gospel protect them from harm, shows them the path in life, uplifts their hearts to heaven and cleanses their souls of stain. I would not hesitate to say that it heals all wounds of their bodies. The practice of reading the Holy Scriptures every day, even briefly, ought to become the practice of every Christian family. Such reading should be seen as daily nourishment. It is a healthy, healing and strengthening food (On Venerating the Holy Cross).
