3 Dear Friends, It was just a week and a half ago that we began our Season of Lent, as many of us came to Church to have ashes imposed on our heads, and we were reminded to, Repent and be faithful to the gospel. The Season of Lent is a time when we are called to evaluate our relationship with the Lord and continue with our positive efforts in drawing closer to Him, and when necessary, honestly evaluate our sinfulness and realize how it impedes our call to holiness. Over the last twenty years of my priesthood, I have heard countless confessions wonderful occasions of helping others grow in their lives of faith through the sacrament of confession. One of the recurrent themes I have often heard from people in the confessional is their frustration and disappointment over confessing the same sin time and time again. They erroneously think that confessing the same sin over and over again is a stumbling block to their path to holiness; however, I often remind them that their confessing the same sin over and over again brings them to the sacrament of confession which can never be seen a stumbling block, but rather is always an avenue of God s grace! Here are a few things to remember, if you find yourself falling into and confessing the same sin over and over. -Spiritual perfection is the work of a lifetime! Unfortunately, as Americans we like the quick and easy solution to a problem. However, holiness takes time! Deepening and fostering faith takes time. Growing in holiness takes time. And while we like the fast and easy way, we also know the best things in life are worth working for! -Don t be too hard on yourself. Some sinful ways can take years to overcome; continue to rely on the grace of God, especially given through His sacrament of confession. There is an old saying that reminds us, It doesn t matter how many times you fall; what matters is how many times you get back again! -Be objective about your sinfulness. When you examine your conscience, we sure to think about the seriousness of your sins; do not soften them, but do not condemn yourself over them either. Don t wallow in your guilt and shame. Instead, pick yourself up, approach the sacrament of confession and trust in the Lord s mercy. -Understand the difference between a mortal sin and a venial sin. A mortal sin is grave matter it is serious sin that seriously wounds your relationship with God. For a sin to be mortal, you must know (or understand) it to be serious; you must think about the action and the consequences; and you carry the action out, knowing it is seriously sinful. Mortal sin must always be confessed in the sacrament of confession before receiving Holy Communion worthily. Venial sin are less serious actions, words or thoughts that wound our relationship with God and others. Venial sins are forgiven through the Act of Penitence at the beginning of each Mass, through acts of charity or by praying an act of contrition. -Understand temptation. Temptation is a desire to do something we know to be wrong or unwise. Temptation, by itself is not a sin. Giving into temptation leads to sinful acts. Temptation always attacks our weaknesses and our shortcomings. We can oftentimes recognize temptation in our lives because it usually causes us to pause and acknowledge that an action is wrong. We can avoid temptation by prayers and especially, by recognizing our personal weaknesses and asking the Lord to give us the strength to avoid what may lead us to sin. -Use Sacramentals. The Church has, literally, thousands of sacramentals to aid us in our path to holiness. The Saint Benedict medal, the scapular, the rosary, Sacred Scripture (among so many others) are all weapons we can use in our spiritual battle against the devil. Keeping them in your home and close to yourself, and using them in your spiritual exercises can help avoid sin. -Pray! Whenever we pray whether privately or in community we are conversing with the Lord. The more we pray, the more we converse with the Lord; the more we converse with the Lord, the stronger our relationship with Him becomes; the stronger our relationship with the Lord, the more we want to avoid offending Him through sin. -Don t give up! Whatever you do, don t give up. Don t tell yourself that your sin is not a sin. Instead face up to the sin and keep up with the struggle. The more you struggle and resist a sin, the more likely you will be able to conquer the sin. -Most importantly: Remember God is on your side! Too many Catholics are on some kind of weird guilt trip as if God is in the business of watching people so he can give them a smack when they get out of line. God is in the exact opposite business. God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. (Jn 3:17) Assure yourself that God is looking for every opportunity to forgive you it is up to you to make the opportunity happen. God can do a lot of things, but He cannot forgive a sinner who is not sorry for their sins. God desires every one of us to be with Him in heaven, it is up to each of us to stay close to the Lord in this life, so His desire will be a reality for us! Lent will be over before you know it! Make the best of Lent, so the Lord can make the best of you! Through the intercession of Saint Augustine and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, may we always be United in the Sacred Heart of Jesus! Fr. O Sullivan
