2 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD AUGUST 6, 2017 The next Wednesday Be Healed Book Study will be August 16th. I will be reflecting on the ninth chapter of Be Healed by Dr. Bob Schuchts. In chapter eight we reflected on how when we choose to unite our sufferings to those of Christ then we will experience a transformation of our suffering. The trauma of the past will die when we take up those crosses one last time and die to them on the cross with Jesus. The chapter for this week is on sacraments and healing. Most of us could define a sacrament as an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. However, most of us do not realize that sacraments are a way that God provides healing to us. Of the seven sacraments, two of the sacraments are especially characterized as sacraments of healing. These two sacraments are the anointing of the sick and confession. Anointing of the sick is especially meant to bring healing to those suffering from serious physical and/or emotional illness. Confession is especially meant to bring healing to those suffering from spiritual illness. However, all seven of the sacraments have a connection to healing in the way that they help to restore our God given identity as Beloved ones of God. This weekend we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. The Transfiguration was when Jesus closest disciples were given the opportunity to see Jesus glory as the son of God. In this weekend s Gospel, we hear the account from the Gospel of Matthew about how Jesus was transfigured. The Transfiguration took place on a mountain because mountains are used in scripture to symbolize where humans encounter God. We can experience mountain type experiences like on retreats or in moments of need. Jesus transfiguration is meant to inspire hope in each of us regarding what it will be like when we are completely healed of the effects of sin. We can experience this transformative healing when we follow God s laws (represented by Moses) and God s words (represented by Elijah). The more we experience God s transformative healing, the more we realize the truth of how we are God s beloved one. This is why Jesus is called the Beloved Son in the Transfiguration. ******************************************** This weekend we bid farewell to our summer seminarian, Justin Lapeyra. Justin will be returning for his second year of Seminary so please keep him and all our seminarians in your prayers. I encourage you to mark your calendars for August 30th at 6:00 PM when the Encountering Jesus sessions will begin. Encountering Jesus is meant to be a special opportunity to grow in one s relationship with Christ whether one is very involved in one s faith or looking to become more involved. I especially encourage you to mark your calendar for October 16th - 19th when Dr. Bob Schuchts will be coming to St. Martin de Porres for a Healing the Whole Person Event in the evening from 6:30pm - 9:00pm. 6 LA TRANSFIGURACIÓN DEL SEÑOR 6 DE AGOSTO DE 2017 Si nuestra fe es débil, el diablo nos vencerá (Papa Francisco, 2014) El santo padre inspirado a la luz de la palabra de Dios, percibe como el diablo lucha para obstaculizar nuestra fe en Dios; esto ocurre en lo personal, familiar y comunitario. En el evangelio de Lucas 22, Jesús nos alerta una y otra ves de este peligro del proyecto de Satanás. En uno de los pasajes, Jesús dice: Simón, Simón! Mira que Satanás ha pedido permiso para sacudirlos a ustedes como trigo que se limpia; pero yo he rogado por ti para que tu fe no se venga abajo. Como pastor me doy cuenta en muchos casos como Satanás con su fuerza aprovecha para debilitarnos o bajarnos el entusiasmo por Dios, Jesús, María y el Espíritu Santo. Como un ejemplo, comparto uno de los tantos casos en nuestros mundo actual. Esto sucedió en mi país natal Nicaragua, pero también ocurre aquí, y allá. Don Cleto venía de una de esas familias campesinas muy humildes de mi pueblo, pero era un ejemplo visible de su devoción mariana. Suelo visitar mi pueblo cada año y el año pasado llegué como de costumbre, Cleto tienes tres hermanas y cuatro hermanos todos son muy practicantes de su fe católica. Una de las tres hermanas, se me acerco para saludarme, y aprovechó para preguntarme si podía darle un tiempo para conversar, le dije que sí, no había problema. Nos sentamos en una banca en la casa de mi madre, y la señora empezó la plática, primero me dijo, te acuerdas de mi hermano Cleto,un hombre tan entregado a nuestra fe católica? le dije que sí me acordaba perfectamente de él, y le compartí mi memoria de mi adolescencia sobre la labor evangélica de Cleto, como organizaba el rosario en las casas, vía crucis en la iglesia Semana Santa y siempre se mostraba dispuesto al servicio del Reino. Después de escucharme la señora me dijo: que buena memoria tienes padre! eso era Cleto a quien conociste, pero hoy la cosa ha cambiado padre, Satanás está en todos lados, entro en mi familia. Cleto ya no practica nuestra fe católica! qué pasó? Qué ocurrió? Mire padre él dirigía el ministerio del rosario, de repente entró en una discusión entre líderes de otro ministerio parroquial, a raíz de esa contradicción Cleto dejó de ir a la iglesia y a las actividades parroquiales, nosotros le decíamos que no dejara lugar al enemigo, pero continuó en silencio, no decía nada. A mediados del año 2000 llegó un pastor pentecostal a la comunidad, este pastor recibía ayuda monetaria de sus líderes principales, para ayudar a la gente, pero en la practica no era lo que decía, su meta era dar a cambio de que se hicieran miembros de su grupo. Un yerno de Cleto se hizo amigo de ese pastor, quien le dio oportunidad para que estudiara en la capital, Managua, con la promesa de regresar para fortalecer la misión que el pastor pretendía establecer en la comunidad. Ahora Cleto es el brazo derecho de su yerno, y son unos de los que dicen, que los católicos, son instrumentos del infierno, porque están equivocados en la palabra de Dios, no leen la Biblia, solo saben venerar a los Santos, y a la Virgen María. Como Cleto hay muchos en nuestra familia y en nuestra comunidad. Mi recuerdo de mi infancia es que los misioneros franciscanos llevaron la evangelización en mi tierra, nos enseñaron la palabra de Dios a todos, pero como dice nuestro Santo Padre Francisco Fe débil, Satanás triunfa.
