2 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 20, 2017 In this week s Gospel we look to the Canaanite woman as an example of someone with humility, cheerfulness, and above all, faith. The Canaanite woman knew that she didn t have what was necessary to remove the demon from her daughter. Therefore, she had no problem begging for the mercy of God. Her humility allowed her to break through her pride. She uttered the prayer only a humble person could offer, Lord, help me! The Canaanite woman is also an example of cheerfulness, even in the face of great adversity: Jesus said in reply It isn t right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs. And she responded, Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters. Among the many conversations that Jesus had, I have to believe that this was one of his favorites. The Lord s final reply, as recorded by Saint Matthew, is: O woman, great is your faith! Her cheerfulness is a by-product of her third characteristic faith. Faith is an unmerited gift from God that, we could say, gives us spiritual eyesight. A faithful person is able to look on the things of this world with supernatural eyesight. This woman had no right to claim the riches of the house of Israel, but she still requests it not out of justice or fairness, but out of God s mercy. Faith allowed her to see this. When a child is baptized, his parents are asked, What do you ask of God s Church? One response is, Faith. In baptism, we enter into the house of God, into a family that allows us to call God our Father. We do not receive the gift of faith and God s sanctifying grace because we deserve it out of justice or fairness but rather out of God s redeeming mercy. This woman was not of the house of Israel. She had no right to the portion given to the Chosen People. Yet, she still asks, and because she asks, a portion is granted to her out of God s mercy. Let us pray that we may be like the Canaanite woman, a woman of humility, cheerfulness and faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) course for the liturgical year will begin on Thursday, September 7th for adults interested in learning about or considering entering into the Catholic faith. Texas Trotters \ On August 28th the Texas Trotters will go to the Mexican American Culture Center to see the documentary: Chicano Rock! The program is filled with intimate first-person storytelling, rare film and photos, and exuberant music from artists such as Lalo Guerrero, the legendary Richie Valens, and classic bands, such as Cannibal and the Headhunters, The Midniters of "Whittier Blvd." fame, El Chicano, Tierra and Los Lobos. A light breakfast and a lunch provided by AARP will be served. We meet and car pool from the Church parking lot at 8:15am. All are invited. Monthly Meeting Our church senior group, the Texas Trotters will hold their monthly brown bag lunch meeting on September 1th after the First Friday noon Mass. We meet afterwards at the parish hall to plan future activities in and around central Texas. This important training event enjoyed the presence of over 130 individuals at St. Mary's Family Center in Fredericksburg, TX. In addition to training everyone was treated to an excellent German meal, and a special performance by a local German choir. The event kicked off on Friday, August 4th with a Priest Panel which included our own Father Charlie Garza who is also the Spiritual Advisor for the TX OK Region and ended mid-day on Sunday, August 6th. VIGESIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 20 DE AGOSTO DE 2017 En el Evangelio de esta semana miramos hacia la mujer cananea como un ejemplo de una persona con humildad, alegría, y sobre todo, fe.

Su humildad le permitía traspasar la barrera del orgullo. Ella pronunciaba una oración que solo una persona humilde podía ofrecer, "Señor, ayúdame!

Y ella respondió, 'Por favor señor, si incluso los perros comen las sobras que caen de la mesa de sus amos." De las muchas conversaciones que Jesús tuvo, creo que está fue una de mis favoritas.

6 VIGESIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 20 DE AGOSTO DE 2017 En el Evangelio de esta semana miramos hacia la mujer cananea como un ejemplo de una persona con humildad, alegría, y sobre todo, fe. La mujer cananea sabía que no poseían lo que era necesario para quitar el demonio de su hija. Por consiguiente no tenía reparo en pedir la misericordia de Dios. Su humildad le permitía traspasar la barrera del orgullo. Ella pronunciaba una oración que solo una persona humilde podía ofrecer, "Señor, ayúdame!" La mujer cananea es también un ejemplo de alegría, incluso en los momentos de adversidad: "Jesús dijo en respuesta 'No es correcto quitarle la comida a los niños y echársela a los perros. Y ella respondió, 'Por favor señor, si incluso los perros comen las sobras que caen de la mesa de sus amos." De las muchas conversaciones que Jesús tuvo, creo que está fue una de mis favoritas. La respuesta final del Señor fue, de acuerdo a San Mateo: "Oh mujer, grande es tu fe!" Su alegría es el subproducto de su tercer característica - fe. La fe es un regalo de Dios no merecido, podríamos decir que nos da una percepción espiritual. Una persona de fe es capaz de ver las cosas de este mundo con una visión súper natural. Esta mujer no tenía ningún derecho a reclamar las riquezas de la casa de Israel, pero aun así las reclama - no por justicia o ser justo- sino por la misericordia de Dios. Su fe la permitía ver esto. No recibimos el regalo de la fe y la gracia sacrificadora de Dios porque las merezcamos - no por justicia o por ser justo- sino por la gracia redentora de Dios. Esta mujer no era de la casa de Israel. Ella no tenía derecho a esa porción entregada a la Gente Elegida. Pero, aun así, ella pidió, y de la misericordia de Dios una porción le es entregada. Oramos para ser más como la mujer cananea, una mujer humilde, alegre y de fe.
